Angelo of Victor, NY. He was a retired contractor and a veteran of the
Korean War, serving
in the U.S. Army. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his children,
Darla Swab of
Naples, FL, Molly and her husband, Mitchell Teisch and granddaughter, Marissa
of Boca Raton,
FL; sisters, Connie O'Connor of Marlboro, MA and Jerri Doherty of Rush,
NY, and brother,
Edward Angelo of Penfield, NY. He was preceded in death by a daughter,
Carrie Angelo.

ANSTINE, ANNA --------- Anna Baird Anstine, 73, of Port Royal, died
at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 23, 1997, at her home.
Born March 27, 1924, in Lock Haven, Clinton County, she was a daughter
of the late Clarence
E. and Rose [Kalmeach] Baird. Her husband John B. Anstine Sr., died January
15, 1991.
Surviving are: children, John B. Anstine Jr., Port Royal, Mrs. Nicholas
S. [Elizabeth A.]
Reynolds, Alexandria, VA, Mrs. Joel [Rachael A.] Diamond, Reedsville; a
sister, Mrs. Robert
[Sally] Shadle, Lock Haven; seven grandchildren. She had lived with her
husband and family on
the Annilick Farm in Licking Creek for 40 years, before moving to Port
Royal. Mrs. Anstine
was Pennsylvania's Republican National Committee-woman. Prior to her service
on the
Republican National Committee, she was chairman of the Republican State
Committee from 1990-
1996. She had also served as vice chairman of the Pennsylvania State Committee
from 1983-
1990, was director emeritus for the Pennsylvania Council of Republican
Women and was chairman
of the 1995 Gubernatorial Inaugural Committee and Delegate to the 1984,
1988, 1992 and 1996
Republican National Conventions. In 1996, she was named a Distinguished
Daughter of
Pennsylvania for her service to the commonwealth. Mrs. Anstine had served
as the past
chairman of the Juniata County Republican Committee and was past president
of the Juniata
County Women's Council. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown
the
EverReady Sunday School Class of the church, Milford Grange No. 773, the
Juniata County
Historical Society, was a past member of the Juniata County Business and
Professional Women's
Club and was past president of the Mifflin-Mifflintown Women's Civic Club.
She also served as
the secretary-treasurer for Annlick Farm Supply Inc., Port Royal. Memorial
services will be
held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Messiah Lutheran Church, corner
of Washington Avenue
and Bridge Street, Mifflintown, with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating.
Interment will be
private and held at the convenience of the family in Westminster Presbyterian
Cemetery,

was born October 7, 1942 in Juniata County, a son of Gertrude [Shoop] Arnold,

and the late John E. Arnold. His wife, Gloria Jean [Sheriff] Arnold, whom
he married May 6,
1967 survives. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three
sons, Richie A.
Arnold, Port Royal, Daniel E. Arnold, McAdoo, and Matthew A. Arnold, Mifflintown
RR4; one
daughter, Bobbie J. Arnold, Mifflintown RR4; two brothers, Donald L. Arnold,
Louisville, KY,
and Brooks E. Arnold, Mifflin; three sisters, Mrs. Donald [Grace] McNemar,
Indiana, Mrs.
Richard [Anna] Hepner, Harrisburg, and Mrs. Gary [Carrie] Naugle, Port
Royal; two half-
brothers, John E. Arnold, Harrisburg, and Richard Arnold, California; and
four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John P. Arnold, and one sister,
Patsy Guyer. He was
employed by Triangle Pacific Corp., Thompsontown, as a mill worker for
the last 28 years. He
was a member of Local No. 287 Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers of
America and attended
Juniata Joint High School. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Wednesday, April 9 at
the Church of God of Prophecy, McCoysville, with Rev. William P. Luckadoo
officiating. Burial
will be in the Pollock Cemetery, East Waterford RR1. Family will receive
friends from 10:00
a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions

BENFER, JAMES FRANKLIN - James F. Benfer, 78, of Colonial Mobile Park,
Selinsgrove, died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, May
21, 1997 at Sunbury Community Hospital, where he was admitted May 18, 1997
after suffering a
stroke at his residence. Prior to their residency at Selinsgrove, Mr. Benfer
and his wife
were residents of Liverpool RR1, Juniata County. Born January 6, 1919 at
Union County, he
was the son of the late Jerome and Verdie Benfer. He was married for many
years to the
former Kathryn Anna Stahl, who survives. Mr. Benfer was a Veteran of WWII,
serving in the
U.S. Army. He was a painter by profession, having been employed for various
contractors in
the area. He was a member of Arbogast Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills
RR2. In addition
to his wife, he is Survived by one brother, Russell Benfer of Florida.
He was preceded in
death by one son, Gary Benfer, in childhood, and by one brother, Theodore
Benfer. The
funeral service was conducted Saturday from the George P. Garman Funeral
Home, Mt. Pleasant
Mills, with Rev. Celo Leitzel officiating. Interment was made in the Lewisburg
Cemetery,
Lewisburg.

a.m. Monday, May 5, 1997 at Lewistown Hospital, where she had been admitted

1997. Born in Northumberland County at Weigh Scales, PA, May 6, 1904, she
was the daughter
of the late Frank W. and Marcella Taylor Sellers. February 11, 1922 she
married Abraham
Benner, who preceded her in death April 7, 1992. Mrs. Benner was educated
in the rural
Paxinos area schools. She was a homemaker and mother, who assisted her
husband in farming
for 20 years. She was a member of Crossroads Mennonite Church, Richfield
RR1. Her leisure
time involved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and great-great-
grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Frances B. Brubaker, Port
Trevorton RR2,
Dorothy B. Hoffman, Middleburg RR4, and Virginia L. Blakely, Middleburg;
seven
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was the
last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by two sons-in-law,
Leroy Hoffman
and Arthur Blakely. The funeral service was conducted Thursday from the
George P. Garman
Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. Orval C. Graybill officiating,
assisted by
Rev. Gary Krabill. Interment was made in the Richfield Union Cemetery,

died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, March 28, 1997,
in the emergency room at Lewistown Hospital. Born August 4, 1918 in Three
Springs, he
was a son of the late Dean E. Sr. and Mabel [Abbott] Bergstresser. His
wife, Ethel
[Madjeski] Bergstresser, died November 27, 1993. He is survived by a number
of nieces
and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded
in death by
three brothers, Daniel S. Bergstresser, Theodore Bergstresser and Robert
A. Bergstresser
Sr., and three sisters, Louise Barner, Ruth Zendt and Dorothy Marie Hockenberry.
He
retired from Sperry New Holland Farm Machinery Co. of New Holland in 1974
with 26 years
of service as a sales representative. He had also worked as a chemist and
supervisor at
E.I. DuPont Demours & Co., Grasselli, NJ. He was a graduate of Port
Royal High School
and Shippensburg University. He was inducted into the Shippensburg University
Athletic
Hall of Fame in October of 1994. He was a member of Port Royal Lutheran
Church, was a
member and past president of Port Royal Lions, Club, a life member of BPOE
Elks Lodge
No. 663, Lewistown, member and past president of Lost Creek Golf Course
and was a member
of Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal. He had also served as a Port Royal
Borough
councilman and was a charter member of Port Royal Municipal Authority,
with 39 years of
service. On March 11, 1997, the Port Royal Borough's new water pollution
control
facility was named in his honor. Services were held Tuesday at Port Royal
Lutheran
Church with Rev. Kathleen M. Kinney officiating. Interment was in New Church
Hill
Cemetery, Port Royal. Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, was in charge of arrangements.

was employed on the assembly line at Armstrong, Lancaster, from 1942 to
1945 and worked as a
billing clerk at Bell Telephone, Harrisburg, from 1946 to 1955. She was
a 1942 graduate of
Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown, and was a member of the Beale Township
Fire Company
Ladies' Auxiliary, Walnut, Crawford-Brubaker Post 5863 VFW Ladies' Auxiliary,
Mifflintown,
and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nook. She served on the Beale Township
Board of Elections,
was a Juniata County 4-H leader for more than 25 years and was a former
Cub Scout den mother.
Funeral services were held Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nook,
with Rev. Kathleen M.
Kinney and Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment was in St. Paul's
Lutheran Cemetery.

for 11 years. He

of the late Austin and Elizabeth [Espigh] Ronk. She was preceded in death
by her husband,
John G. Capps, in 1964. Surviving are nieces Mrs. Jay [Virginia] Britcher,
Mifflintown RR1,
Mrs. Ross [Lucille] Gearhart, Sebring, FL, and Mrs. Ernest [Helena] Hippo,
St. Augustine; a
number of nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was
preceded in death by
one brother, William Ronk, and two sisters, Helena Kyper and Erma M. "Mooney"
Maines.
Services were held Thursday at Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine. A private
family viewing
was held Friday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal. Interment followed in
Riverview Cemetery,
Huntingdon.

had been employed by Carlisle Shoe Co. and was a member of the First Church
of God, Carlisle.
Graveside services were held Thursday at Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.

Association, charter member of the Millerstown Civic Club, member of Millerstown
Ambulance
League and Millerstown Fire Company Ladies' Auxitiary. Services will be
held at 10:00 a.m.
Thursday at Millerstown United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Millerstown

Methodist Church, Cocolamus and Women of the Moose, Millerstown. The funeral

Everly of Beaver Springs RR1. November 29, 1980 he married the former Juanita
K. Royer, who
survives. He graduated in 1976 from West Snyder High School and served
as a staff sergeant
with the U.S. Army, Air Borne Ranger, Co. B1 109th Infantry. He had been
employed by Cherry
Hill Hardwoods, Inc., Richfield RR1, as a truck driver for the past six
years. He was a
member of Stony Run Mission Church, Richfield RR1. He spent his leisure
time hunting and
golfing. He continued to be active in his military duties. In addition
to his parents and
wife, he is survived by two children, Dustin Lee Everly and Meagan Kay
Everly, both at home;
two brothers, Richard W. Everly III and Thomas R. Everly, both of Beaver
Springs RR1; two
sisters, Stair L. Rice, Newport, and Brenda K. Grose, Middleburg RR4; and
his maternal
grandmother, Flora [Fernberg] Snook, Lewistown. He was preceded in death
by his maternal
grandfather, Lester Snook, and his paternal grandparents, Richard Sr. and
Ruth [Carpenter]

1997 at Brookline Manor Nursing Home, Mifflintown RR1 where she had resided
for the past
2-1/2 years. Born November 28, 1898 at Perry County, she was the daughter
of the late
Albert and Minnie Jones Ward. She was married to Earl Wesley Ferguson,
who preceded her in
death in November 1979. Mrs. Ferguson was educated at the New Bloomfield
Academy, where she
graduated. She taught for several years at Wardville School. She gave piano
lessons and
served as her church pianist for many years. In the 1930s she was employed
by Kinney's Shoe
Company, then of Harrisburg. She also assisted her husband in farming.
Mrs. Ferguson was a

are: one
nephew, George Ward, York; two nieces, Fay Null, Florida, and Eileen Ward,
York, 13 great-
nephews and great-nieces; 18 great-great-nephews and nieces; and two great-great-great-
nephews. She was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in
death by a brother,
D. Earl Ward, and three sisters, Floy Carr, Evelyn Hackenberger and Dorothy
Strawhecker.
The funeral service was conducted Thursday at the George P. Garman Funeral
Home, Mt.
Pleasant Mills, with her pastor, Rev. Salvatore E. Buonocore, officiating.
Interment was
made in the Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown.

1997 in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. He was born February
9, 1966 in Lewistown,
a son of Carolyn E. [Aumiller] Fike, Mifflintown RR3, and the late Marlin
K. Fike Sr. He is
survived by his wife, the former Tammy M. Auker, whom he married March
20, 1993. In addition
to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Jared Kenneth Fike, at
home; and four
brothers and sisters, Walker C. "Buck" Fike, Ronnie Fike, Karlena Hatter
and Connie Keller,
all of Mifflintown RR3. He was a 1984 graduate of Juniata High School,
Mifflintown, and
attended Penn State University in 1985 and 1986. He was a member of the
National Honor
Society in high school and a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Mifflintown
RR3. He was
an outdoors person who enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques and porcelain
figurines and
raising aquarium fish. He was employed as a cook at Stop 35 Restaurant,
Mifflintown, and had
previously been employed as a cook at Carol's Cafe, McAlisterville, and
Benner's Country
Restaurant, Millerstown. The funeral service was held Monday at St. Stephen's
Lutheran
Church, Mifflintown RR3, with Rev. Louise A. Knotts officiating. Interment
followed in the
church cemetery.

31, 1997, in his home. Born June 3, 1944 in Harrisburg, he was a son of
Marguerite [Fagan]
Flurie of Sugarloaf and the late Charles R. Flurie Sr. His wife, the former
Bonnie D.
Carper, whom he married on July 25, 1970, survives. Also surviving are:

Megan A. Flurie and Shannon M. Flurie, both at home; three brothers, Richard

Sugarloaf, David E. Flurie, Enola, and Robert W. Flurie, Scottsdale, AZ;
one sister, Kathy
I. Bauman, Enola; two nieces and five nephews. A 1962 graduate of East
Pennsboro High
School, Harrisburg, he received a BA in sociology from Susquehanna University,
Selinsgrove,
in 1989. During, his younger years, he was active in Boy Scouts as a troop
leader in the
Enola and Port Trevorton areas. He was employed as a substation engineer
at Harrisburg
Steel Mill, Harrisburg, from 1963 until 1981, and as a counselor for CONCERN,
a company
that provided professional care for children and youth, from 1983 until
1991, before
retiring due to disability. He volunteered as a math tutor at East Juniata
High School,
Cocolamus, for 1-1/2 years. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist
Church, Port
Trevorton RR1, where he served as administrative board chairman and as
a Sunday school
teacher of adult classes. He also was active in Bible school. He was formerly
a member of
Paradise United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the administrative
board
and the cemetery association. He was a member of United Seel Workers Union,
Harrisburg,
serving as union president from 1979 until 1982. He truly enjoyed people
and traveling
and the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Services were held Tuesday,
at St. John's
United Methodist Church, Port Trevorton RR1, with Rev. Richard L. Berg
officiating.
Interment was in the adjoining church Cemetery. The George P. Garman Funeral
Home, Mt.
Pleasant Mills, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may

inducted into the National Honor Society, and a part-time waitress at Dutch
Kitchen
restaurant, Port Trevorton; a peer helper for Greenwood seventh- and eighth-graders;
a member
of its Wildcat Writers journalism. club and Students Offering Support organization;
a
talented artist and former member of the school's art club, whose design
was featured on the
First National Bank of Liverpool's 90th anniversary coffee mug; and recently
won high honors
in science competition at East Pennsboro High School and Dickinson College,
Carlisle.
Surviving are her parents, Paul Ernest Gallegos and Bonnie Sweigart, with
whom she lived; two
brothers, Anthony P. and Eric E., and a sister, Paula R., all at home;
and her maternal
grandmother, Mary Sweigart of Liverpool. Memorial services were held Tuesday
at St. John
[Barners] Lutheran Church, Liverpool RR1 Garman Funeral Home was in charge

Lancaster Mennonite
School in 1966. She was a homemaker most of her life, but was employed
as a presser by Lyon
Fashion, McAlisterville, since July 1996. She was a member of Lost Creek
Mennonite Church.
She enjoyed making crafts and being with her family. She also made many
bridal gowns and
bridesmaid dresses. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived
by two daughters,
Donna M. Saner, Mifflintown RR1, and Valerie A. Hostler, Mifflintown RR2;
two sons, Neil M.
Glick, McAlisterville RR1, and Nevin M. Glick, HC 63, Mifflintown; five
sisters, Judy Martin,
New Columbia, PA, Barbara Brubaker, Mifflintown RR1, Rachel Erb, Milton,
Miriam Lauver,
Mifflintown, and Lillian Weaver, Mifflintown; and three grandchildren.

home. Born February 10, 1926 in Port Royal, he was a son of the late Banks
and Jessie
[Saffel] Kennedy. His wife, E. Romaine [McCulloch] Kennedy, whom he married
July 19, 1947,

William Herbert "Herb"
Kennedy on May 24, 1975, and a brother, James Kennedy, in 1968. He was
a retired
self-employed painter. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having
served in the South
Pacific during World War II. He attended Tuscarora Valley High School and
was a member of
Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal and Port Royal Ambulance Association. He
was a former Port
Royal Borough councilman and was Methodist by faith. He was a hunter and
avid fisherman who
won many awards and trophies. He enjoyed gardening and often had the prize-winning
pumpkin
at the Juniata County Fair. Services were held Friday at Guss Funeral Home,
Mifflintown, with
Rev. Donald E. Bailor officiating. Interment was in Old Church Hill Cemetery,
Port Royal,
where military services were conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Council.

home. Born January 13, 1936 in Boiling Springs, be was a son of the late
Irvin D. Sr. and
Dessie Lehman. His wife, Dorothy [Eaton] Lehman, whom he married January
26, 1994, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Marc A. Lehman, Daniel P. Lehman and Beth
A. Miller, all of
York; a sister, Mrs. William [Janet] Long, Red Lion; five grandchildren.
He was preceded in
death by a brother, Marlin Lehman. He was an asbestos worker, employed
by Local No. 23,
Harrisburg, with 42 years of service, retiring in 1996. Private services

LEPLEY, MARGARET MARY - Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Mary Keating Lepley, 38,
of Charlotte, NC, died at home Tuesday, March
25, 1997 after a lengthy, courageous battle against cancer. A Memorial
Mass was celebrated at
St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Charlotte, March 31. A funeral mass and interment
will be held
when weather permits, at Lake Side Cemetery, Calumet, MI. Mrs. Lepley was
born August 15,
1958 in Hancock, MI, and grew up in Houghton, MI. A devoted wife, mother
and daughter, she
married her husband July 19, 1980. She was a graduate of St. Ignatius Catholic
School,
Houghton High School and the University of Michigan. She also completed
studies at UNCC and
Queens College. Mrs. Lepley worked in the insurance and benefit consulting
field for many
years and was a partner with Flores and Associates when she became ill.
She was a licensed
life and health insurance agent and a board member of the Charlotte Association
of Health
Underwriters. She was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, the Central
YMCA, Providence
Country Club, Ballantyne Country Club, Foxcroft East Racquet and Swim Club
and the Tower
Club. Survivors include her husband, Erm, and her daughter, Kate, of Charlotte;
her mother,
Margaret Keating of Houghton; and her brother, Jay Keating, of Columbus,
OH. In lieu of

whom he

which he retired in 1996. He was the mayor of Port Royal for 40 years and
was a member of
Port Royal Presbyterian Church, Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal, Port Royal
Ambulance
Association and Juniata County Sportsmen's Association. He was also instrumental
in starting
the Boy Scout troop in Port Royal and was a leader for many years. Services
will be held at
2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third Street, Mifflintown,

R. Sunderland Jr. and Richard Burchfield officiating. Interment will be
in New Church Hill

MARK, CHARLES McCLEAN - Charles McClean Mark, 70 of Monroe Township,
NJ, died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at St. Peter's
Medical Center, New Brunswick, NJ. Born in Newport, he was a son of the
late Charles M. Sr.
and Mae [Sausserman] Mark. His wife, Helen Patricia [Lauver] Mark, survives.
Also surviving
are: a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law, Paul Goss and Shirley Goss,
both of Lewistown;
several nieces and nephews. He lived in the Monroe area of New Jersey for
many years. He was
a commercial helicopter pilot and aerial applicator in the farming industry
for 46 years,
logging over 19,000 flight hours, flying for several companies up and down
the east coast. He
was last employed by East Coast Helicopter, Gettysburg and had his flying
license before his
driver's license. At the age of 21, he participated in the Berlin Airlift
as a member of the
Army Air Force. He also flew in Ecuador spraying bananas and in Liberia
spraying experimental
rubber plants. He received his mechanics certification and was a certified
helicopter flight
instructor. He was a member of the East Coast Applicators Association,
the Aircraft Owners
and Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
He was also a life member
of Elks Lodge No. 663, Lewistown, a former member of the Newport Rod and
Gun Club and was a
self-taught taught artist, painting mostly aircraft. Services were held
Sunday, May 18, at
the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Monroe Township. Interment was in the
Newport Cemetery.

Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, following a lengthy illness. Born May
15, 1961 in Lewistown,
she was a daughter of Mildred B. [Nearhood] Strawser of McAlisterville
and the late John W.
Strawser. Her husband, Stephen D. McClure, whom she married June 11, 1994,
survives. Also
surviving are: a 19-month-old daughter, Elizabeth Erin McClure, at home;
a brother, Brian
Strawser, Port Royal; two sisters, Janice Aeppli, York Springs and Carla
Strawser,
McAlisterville. She was a 1979 graduate of East Juniata High School, Cocolamus
and a 1983
graduate of Shippensburg University. She had been employed as a second
grade teacher at
Newport Elementary School for the past 13 years. She was a field hockey
coach for nine years
and a softball coach for seven years at Newport High School. Earlier in
life, she had been a
swimming instructor and life guard at the McAlisterville Community Swimming
Pool. She was a
member of Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, McAlisterville, where she was
on the Board of
Trustees. She was also a member of Newport Education Association, Pennsylvania
State
Education Association and the National Education Association. The funeral
was held Monday at
Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, McAlisterville, with Revs. Elaine L. Fogarty
and Frank J.
Swartz officiating. Interment was in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal

and football. He was
an outdoors enthusiast who loved to hunt, fish, ski and watch sprint and
NASCAR races. He had
worked part-time at Empire Kosher, Mifflintown. The funeral service was

Thompsontown United Methodist Church, with Revs. David D. Biser and Kerry
Aucker officiating.

Royal RR2; one
brother, Roy McKnight, California; one sister, Isabelle Hubler, Port Royal

grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
He was a heavy
equipment operator, owning and operating Sam McKnight & Son Excavating
Co., Mifflintown,
since 1962. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European
Theater. He was a
charter member of Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post No. 5863, Mifflintown, and
was a Protestant by
faith. Funeral services were held Saturday at Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown,
with Rev.
Harold N. Imes officiating. Burial was in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery,
Mifflintown.

Thomas J. and Bertha A. Taylor Nankivell. She retired as a schoolteacher
at Seventh Ward
Elementary School, Lewistown, after 36 years and also taught at the former
Penn Township

Mifflintown. She retired in 1971 after 36 years of service in the Juniata
County School
District. She started the first private kindergarten in Mifflintown. She
was a member of
Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, where she was a former teacher of
the Golden Circle
Sunday School Class, and was a former member of the Mifflin-Juniata Community
Concert
Association Board of Directors. Funeral services were held Sunday at the
Guss Funeral Home,
Mifflintown, with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment was in
Westminster

Township, died Saturday morning, April 5,
1997 at her residence. She had been in failing health for the past five
years. Born June 3,
1924 at Shenandoah, PA, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth [Seward]
Dewald Fox. She
was raised by her grandparents, the late Joseph and Edith Seward of Paxtonville.
December 20,
1952 she married Lamar E. "Bill" Shafer Sr. Mrs. Shafer graduated in 1942
from Middleburg
Joint High School. She was them employed by the former Westinghouse Corp.,
Sunbury, until
1953. She retired from there, working there even during WWII. She also
had been employed as a
nurse's aide at Rathfon's Convalescent Home, Selinsgrove. She served in
1971 as district
magistrate for Juniata County, at Mifflintown, and as notary for Susquehanna
Township from
1971 to 1995. Her justice of the peace duties were performed during 1966
and several years
thereafter. During her childhood, Mrs. Shafer was a member of Paxtonville
United Methodist
Church, where she later taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Pennsylvania
Association of Notaries from 1971 until 1995. During her retirement, she
loved to read and
cook, but most of all spent quality time with her family. In addition to
her husband, she is
survived by one son, Lamar E. "Hank" Shafer Jr., Liverpool RR2; four daughters,
Carol J.
Shafer, Lois E. Walter, Marilyn L. Michaels and Anita F. Shafer, all of
Liverpool RR2; one
stepdaughter, Susie Getz, Liverpool RR2; four brothers, Howard Dewald,
Hazleton, Robert
Dewald, Stanhope, NJ, Charles Dewald, Mountain Top, PA, and Jimmy Dewald,
Nanticoke, PA; one
sister, Phyllis Heski, Plymouth, PA; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Shafer
was preceded in
death by one sister, Catherine. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday,
April 9 at
11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, Port Trevorton, with

Mills RR1, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997 at
2:50 p.m. at the Renova Center, Mechanicsburg, where he was admitted the
previous day from
Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. He had been hospitalized for nearly three
weeks. His health
had been declining for several months. Born May 30, 1912 at Mt. Pleasant
Mills, Perry
Township, Snyder County, he was the son of the late William and Ella Fultz
Shaffer. He was
married April 18, 1931 to the former Pauline M. Hackenberg, who died August
3, 1993. May 29,
1994 he married the former Florence I. "Becky" Dressler, who survives.
He was educated at
Shaffer's Schoolhouse, Perry Township. In 1946, Mr. Shaffer owned, operated
and drove trucks
for his business, Shaffer's Trucking, at Mt. Pleasant Mills RR1, and in
the late 1980s he
established Keystone Carriers Trucking, also at Mt. Pleasant Mills RR1
He continued to tinker
with trucks and repairs even after his retirement in 1991. He was a member
of Aline United
Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR1, Reliance Hose Company Ambulance
League, Middleburg,
and AARP. He enjoyed taking trips to Elk County to view the wildlife and
see the, elk. He is
survived, in addition to his wife, by five sons, Richard L., Louis C. and
Kim A. Shaffer, all
of Mt. Pleasant Mills RR1 Warren L. Shaffer, Shermans Dale RR1, and Norman
E. Shaffer,
Richfield; two daughters, Ruth C. Martin, Middleburg RR4 and Carol M. Mengle,
Mt. Pleasant
Mills RR1; three stepsons, Ronald Kerstetter, Meeker, CO, John Kerstetter,

William Kerstetter, East Waterford; and three stepdaughters, Joyce Wilson,

Harriett [Love] Burdge. Her husband, Ralph B. Shearer, died March 19, 1984.

Columbus, OH, and
Trevor Mahin, Monarch Beach, CA; and two greatgrandsons, Nicholas and Connor

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. She was a member
of Upper Tuscarora
Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, and was a 50-year member and Past Matron
of Mifflin Chapter
No. 260, Order of Eastern Star, and former page of Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania.
She was a
former educator in Juniata and Huntingdon counties. Funeral services will

a.m. Saturday from the Upper Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, with Revs.

Manufacturing Company, Selinsgrove. She was the oldest member of Richfield
United Church of
Christ, a member for 79 years. She was a member of Richfield Ambulance
League and Fire
Company and the ALS Service, Lewistown. Hobbies included flowers, gardening
and reading.
Surviving are two brothers, Earl M. Shellenberger, Lewistown, and Robert
M. Sbellenberger,
Richfield; one sister, Beatrice E. Lauver, Richfield; three nieces, including
Mrs. Marjorie
Yoder, who was her caregiver; three nephews; and many great-nieces and
great-nephews. She
was preceded in death by three brothers, Samuel, William and Clyde Shellenberger;
three
sisters, Gertrude Lauver, Dorothy Varner and Claire S. Spigelmyer; and
one niece, Evelyn

in 1939, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as Specialist, 1st Class in

WWII, and was later employed by the University of Delaware for 19 years.

Church of Christ
and the Four County Young-At-Heart Senior Center. She is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Paul
[Sarah] Bowers, Bellevue, OH; three grandchildren, Mrs. Steven [Lynda]
Morgan, Genoa, OH,
Mrs. Perry [Patricia] Indorf, Wooster, OH, and Mrs. Robert [Paula] Young,
Tiffin, OH; five
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. In addition to
her husband and
parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter Adams, J. North

Thursday, May 8, 1997, from injuries received in an auto accident that
day. He was born March
5, 1943 in Roaring Spring, a son of the late LeRoy Sparks and Mrs. Vera
[Middleton] Sparks of
Thompsontown. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, the
former Donna Snyder,
whom he married in Cumberland, MD, January 26, 1962; one brother, Ronald
L. Sparks,
Thompsontown; and a sister, Judy, wife of Donald Sieber, Thompsontown.
He was preceded in
death by an infant sister. He was affiliated with Everett Assembly of God.
He was employed by
S&S Communications of Acme as a foreman for underground phone line
installation. He was a
member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 1249 of East
Syracuse, NY.
Private funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of
the family. There will
be no public visitation at the request of the deceased. Arrangements were
made by the Dalla

whom he married
August 18, 1951. Also surviving are one son, Dr. J. Andrew Stoner of Fort
Wayne, IN; one
daughter, Margaret "Peggy" L. Knepper of Mont Alto, PA; one brother, Jess
B. Stoner of
Mifflintown RR5; two sisters, Anna R. Stoner of Mifflintown RR5 and Sarah
Oldham of Zimbabwe;
and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell
Stoner, David
Stoner and Roy Stoner, and one sister, Mary Beth Stoner. He was a retired
farmer and
plasterer. He was a lifelong member of Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church,
Mifflintown,
where he was a deacon for 32 years and served as minister of visitation,
treasurer, church
board member, Sunday school teacher and custodian. The funeral service
was held Saturday at
Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, with Rev. Kenneth R. Letner officiating.
Interment was

1997 in the VA Medical Center, Lebanon. He was born in McAlisterville,
September 6, 1927, a
son of the late Harry A. and Grace C. [Varner] Strawser. His wife, the
former Mildred G.
Varner, whom he married July 8, 1961, survives. In addition to his wife,
he is survived by
two sons, John O. Strawser, McAlisterville, and Eric M. Strawser, Oakland
Mills; a brother,
Ira Harris, Huntingdon; three granddaughters; and one great-grandson. He
was predeceased by a
brother, John W. Strawser, in September 1994. He attended Fayette High
School,
McAlisterville, and later, a school of photography in New York City. He
entered the U.S. Army
in 1945 and served two tours before being discharged on disability. He
was awarded the World
War II Victory Medal. He was a self-employed photographer and for a short
time had a studio
in McAlisterville. He spent much of his time giving slide presentations
to area senior
citizens groups. He was a member of Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, McAlisterville.
The
funeral was held Tuesday atLost Creek Presbyterian Church, McAlisterville,
with Rev. Elaine
L. Fogarty officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery, with
full military honors
performed by the Juniata County Veterans Council. The Ronald C. Sheaffer

May 2, 1909 in Liverpool Township, Perry County, he was the son of the
late Edward and Mary
Alice Funk Strawser. April 29, 1939 he married the former Ruth Evelyn Lyter,
who preceded
him in death June 30, 1980. Mr. Strawser was educated at the Dry Saw Mill
grammar
schoolhouse in Perry County. He was engaged in farming his entire life,
and during the
winter months he did butchering for area residents. He was an avid reader.
Mr. Strawser was
Protestant by faith. He was the last of his immediate family with only
his nieces, nephews,
and a sister-in-law, Mary Strawser of New Jersey, surviving. He was preceded
in death by
two brothers, Benjamin and Elmer Strawser and a sister, Emma Barner. The
funeral service
was Friday evening, May 23 from the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool,
with Rev.
Peter H. Kuebler officiating. Interment will be privately by the family
at a later date.

and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of American Legion Post
No. 109, Rutherford,
NJ, and Middletown Moose Lodge No. 410. He was a World War II U.S. Army
veteran. He retired
in 1986 with 28 years of service as an electrical technical writer from
Kearfoot Corp.
Services were to be private and held at the convenience of the family,
with burial in the

RR1, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, at his
home. Born June 22, 1920, in Port Royal, he was a son of the late Roy S.
and Ella M. [Miller]
Weimer. Surviving are: three sons, David E. Weimer, Richfield RR1,
Samuel C. Weimer,
McAlisterville RR1, and Larry D. Weimer, Clarksville, TN; a sister, Mrs.
Samuel [Doris]
Zendt, Duncannon; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was
preceded in death by
a sister, Madeline W. Pannabaker on December 20, 1977. He was a retired
truck driver, having
worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. He had also worked
for Juniata Concrete
Company, Mifflintown RR3. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served
in World War II. He
was a member of American Legion Post No. 298, Mifflintown, Anivets Post
No. 122, Thompsontown
and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 925, Millerstown. Services were
held Sunday at Rex
Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Pastor Glenn Sinclair officiating. Interment
was in Faith
Lutheran Church Cemetery, Millerstown RR2. Full military graveside services
were conducted by
the Juniata County Veterans Council. Memorial donations may be made to

WERT, A. FERN --------- A. Fern Wert, 81, of HC 63, Mifflintown [Oakland
Mills], died at 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 17,
1997 at her home. She was born November 4, 1915 in Delaware Township, Juniata
County, a
daughter of the late Hudson H. and Phoebe [Shirk] Brubaker. She is survived
by her husband,
Jacob M. Wert, whom she married June 26, 1937. Also surviving are a son,
Sherle L. Wert of
Milroy; three daughters, Mrs. Richard [Helen Ann] Peachey of HC 67, Mifflin,
Mrs. Philip
[Nancy R.] Varner of HC 63, Oakland Mills and Judy M. Kanagy of Thompsontown
RR1; three
brothers, Lester Brubaker and Paul Brubaker, both of McAlisterville RR1,
and Darwin Brubaker
of Mifflintown RR2; one sister, Bernice Kauffman of Thompsontown; 11 grandchildren;
and 17
great-grandchildren. She was a seamstress, having retired from Lyon Fashions,
McAlisterville.
She was also a professional quilter. She was a member of Cedar Grove Brethren
in Christ
Church, Mifflintown RR4, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and
was active in the
Women's Bible Sun ay School Class. A funeral service was held Friday at
Cedar Grove Brethren
in Christ Church, with Rev. Kenneth R. Letner and Rev. Luke L. Keefer Sr.
officiating.
Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Mifflintown RR4. Memorial contributions

died at 10:11 a.m. Friday, April 18, 1997
at Lewistown Hospital. Born November 5, 1914 in Aqueduct, Perry County,
he was a son of the
late Clyde A. and Florence [Strunk] Willi. His wife, Beatrice I. [Gill]
Willi, whom he
married July 15, 1937, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Florence
I. Rumberger,
Thompsontown, Janet M. Zeiders, Millerstown RR1; sister, Mrs. Samuel [Florence]
B. McKim,
Beaver Springs; four grandsons and two great-grandchildren. He was retired
from Standard
Steel, Burnham, with 30 years of service. He was a member of the United
Steelworker's Union,
the Full Gospel Mission Church, Mexico; and was a life-member of the National
Rifle
Association. Services were held Monday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal,
with Revs. Richard L.
Smith and Margaret A. Rowe officiating. Interment was in Union Cemetery,
Walker Township.

died March 27, 1997. She was the daughter of J.
Howard and Ella [Banks] Neely, born September 21, 1902 in Mifflintown.
She was preceded in

Margaret [Elizabeth's
twin]. Services were held at the Wrisley funeral Home Chapel, South Deerfield,
MA, March 31.
Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, OH.

died at 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at the Village. She was born
May 2, 1907 in Lack
Township, Juniata County, a daughter of the late George and Lottie [Pyles]
Henry. Her
husband, David Yetter, died July 1, 1969. Survivors include: a foster son,
Banks A. [Dick]
Shoop, Mifflintown; two sisters, Beulah Thatcher, East Waterford RR1, and
Mary Briggs, Dry
Run; a half-brother, Dale Henry, Mifflintown; a half-sister, Doris Armstrong,
Port Royal RR1;
four foster grandchildren and a foster great-grandchild. She was preceded
in death by three
sisters and three brothers. She retired as a seamstress for East Waterford
Textile Factory
and was a member of Cross Keys United Methodist Church. Funeral services
were held Saturday,
June 14 from Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with Pastor Sharon Landis
officiating.
Interment was in East Waterford Cemetery.

retired farmer and

2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Rev.
Frank J. Swartz
officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.

a brother, Robert
M. Zimmerman Jr., Port Royal. He was a laborer for Warren Holden General

Thompsontown. He was a former employee of Empire Kosher Poultry Inc., Mifflintown,

House Restaurant, Mifflintown and Triangle Pacific Cabinet Corp., Thompsontown
RR1. He was a
1969 graduate of Juniata High School, Mifflintown and was a member of First
Baptist Church,
Mifflintown. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Rex Funeral
Home Port Royal,
with Rev. Frank J. Swartz and Rev. Richard E. Wright officiating. Interment

ZOOK, STANLEY O. ------ Stanley O. Zook, 85, of Brunswick House, Springettsbury
Township, formerly of York, died at
2:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at his home. He was the husband of
the late Viola V.
[Van Noy] Zook. Mr. Zook was born June 22, 1911 in Lewistown, the son of
the late Henry O.
and Viola [Rhodes] Zook. He was a chief engineer at J.E. Baker Co. for
33 years, retiring in
1974. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, North York Lions
Club, White Rose
Lodge 706 Free and Accepted Masons, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple
Shrine, York County
Shrine Club, Tall Cedars of Lebanon York Forest 30 and Pennsylvania Society
of Professional
Engineers. He was a former instructor for Civilian Conservation Corps and
York YMCA and a
graduate of Pennsylvania State College. Mr. Zook is survived by a son,
Kenneth L. Zook of
Harrisburg; a daughter, Martha Z. Brendle of Mercersburg; two granddaughters;
a slster,
Elizabeth Sterrett of Cumberland, MD; and a companion, Nancy Harris. The
service was held
Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, York. Burial was in Suburban
Memorial Gardens.
The Emig Funeral Home, Dover, was in charge of arrangements. Officiating
at the service was
his pastor, Rev. David P. McCullough. Memorial contributions may be made
