APPLE, MARY E. -------- Mrs. Mary Ellen Apple, 87, formerly of Richfield,
died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, August 25, 1997
at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, where she bad been hospitalized
for the past
ten days. Prior to her hospitalization, she had resided at Buffalo Valley
Nursing Home,
Lewisburg. Born August 20, 1910 at Pfoutz Valley, she was the daughter
of the late Harry
Jerome and Annie Searer Leister. September 26, 1931, she married Emory
Allen Apple, who
preceded her in death April 7, 1988. She was educated at the Northeast
Grammar School,
Juniata County. Mrs. Apple was employed as a cook for Susquehanna University,
Selinsgrove,
for 14 years. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of Christ
United Methodist
Church, Selinsgrove, and enjoyed quilting, embroidery, baking and cooking.
Surviving are
three sons, LaVerne H. and his wife Bessie of Danville, Darwin P. and his
wife Louise of
Millerstown RR2 and William A. and his wife Anna of Shamokin Dam; two daughters,
Shirley M.
Brubaker and her husband Delbert "Shelley" of Richfield and Faith D. Compton
and her husband
Robert of Richfield; one sister, Elsie P. Hoffman, Richfield; 11 grandchildren;
and 11 great-
grandchildren. Mrs. Apple was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome
and Roy Leister, and
three sisters, Dorothy Leister, Jenny Brown and Grace Spade. The funeral
service was
conducted Friday from Richfield Mennonite Church, with Rev. Jonathan L.
Bausman officiating
and Pastor Todd Zike assisting. Interment was made in the Richfield Union
Cemetery,
Richfield. Funeral arrangements were made by the George P. Garman Funeral
Home, Mt. Pleasant
Mills.

Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. Born June 8, 1920 in Fayette Township,
Juniata County, she
was a daughter of the late Frank Neimond and Mazie [Frymoyer] Neimond Auker.
Her husband,
Paul E. Apple, to whom she was married October 1, 1938, preceded her in
death May 13, 1990.
Survivors include: four daughters, Mrs. Wendell [Joann] Shelley, Mifflintown
RR2, Mrs. Robert
[Darlene] Haupt, Paxinos RR1, Mrs. Ronald [Faye] Zeiders, Winfield, Mrs.
William [Lynn]
Messimer, McAlisterville RR2; a brother, Frank Neimond Jr., Cocolamus;
eight grandchildren;
three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Strawser; stepfather, Frank Auker;
a son-in-law,
Donald Zeiders; and a granddaughter. She was a homemaker most of her life,
except for two
years of employment at the cannery, McAlisterville, a short while at a
local shirt factory
and at Mengle's Nursing Home, Richfield. She had attended Evendale Elementary
School and was
a member of Niemond's Independent Church, Richfield RR1, where she had
been a deaconess. She
was a member of the Juniata County Democratic Women's Club. She enjoyed
cooking and baking.
Services were held Monday at Niemond's Independent Church, Richfield RR1,
with Rev. Kenneth
M. Mick Sr. officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Memorial

ARBOGAST, ANN W. ------ Ann W. Arbogast, 86, of Lewistown, died at 10:55
a.m. Monday, July 7, 1997 at her home. She
was born December 28, 1910 at Orbisonia, Huntingdon County, a daughter
of the late Mabel Hunt
and Lloyd Wakefield. Her husband, Joseph B. Arbogast, died in 1987. she
is survived by two
children, Nancy Maguire of Lewistown and Joann Adams of Mifflintown; three,
grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six sisters
and two brothers. She
was a housewife and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lewistown.
Funeral services were
held Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, with Vicar Steve Brauner officiating.
Interment
was in Lind Memorial, Cemetery. Barr Funeral Home, Lewistown, was in charge
of arrangements.

William Brewer. He
attended Annville/Cleona High School and served in the United States Army
from July 1955 to
November 1958, with more than a year in Korea. His wife, the former Hettie
B. Yoder, whom he
married October 12, 1985, survives. In addition to his mother and wife,

by a sister, Grace Brewer. He retired in 1991 due to ill health from MTA,
Elizabethtown,
where he was a truck driving instructor for four years. Except for a few
years as a ranch
hand in Wyoming, he was a truck driver for the Pennsylvania Department
of Transportation;
Princess Home, Middleburg; Empire Kosher, Mifflintown; Shaffer Truckin
New Kingston; Morgan
Drive-A-Way, Leola, and Eazor Express, Loganton. He also provided a transport
service for the
Amish community from 1981 to 1983. He was a member of South Juniata Baptist
Church, Honey
Grove; Walker Grange No. 786, Mexico; and a past member of Juniata Emergency
Team CB Club and
Thompsontown Area Lions Club and Fire Department. He was a collector of
Winross and Ertl
model trucks and hats. The funeral service was held Tuesday at the Ronald

August 31, 1997, at Marianwood Hospice Center, Bellevue. Born November
20, 1932 in
Pittsburgh, be was a son of Wilfred A. Burton Sr. of Manassas, VA and the
late Joyce [Bousum]
Burton. His wife, Ava [Riley] Burton, whom be married September 17, 1955,
survives. Also
surviving are: four daughters, Pamela Sode, Carnation, WA, Diane Burton,
Federal Way, WA,
Barbara Olson, Washaugal, WA, and Susan Burton, Puyallup; a brother, John
G. "Jack" Burton,
Haymarket, VA; two grandchildren, Seth and Jessica Sode. He was a management
consultant, was
co-owner of Political Management Inc., Issaquah, WA and was a tactician,
strategist and
mentor for many prominent politicians in the Bellevue area, Washington
state and national
races. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in a criminal investigation
division in
Frankfurt, Germany, in the 1950s. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity,
Bellevue
Rotary Club, was past director of the National Conference of Christians
and Jews, was founder
and past director of Camp Brotherhood and was a former board member of
the Central Area Boys
and Girls Club, Evergreen School for Gifted Children and Advance Bellevue.
Services were held
Saturday at Guss Funeral Home, Mifflintown. Interment was in Westminster
Presbyterian
Cemetery, Mifflintown, where military graveside honors were conducted by
the Juniata County

2, 1997 at Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. Born January
25, 1958 at
Waynesburg, she was a daughter of Price A. Cheek and Sandra [Grimes] Cheek
of Waynesburg. In
addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Tina Marie Frownfelter
of Blain and
Mary Beth Gipe of Waynesburg; one niece, Carrie Sue Frownfelter; and two
nephews, John
Frownfelter and Price Anthony Gipe. She resided in Juniata County most
of her life and was a
1977 graduate of Juniata High School. She was a member of South Juniata
Baptist Church. She
worked in food preparation and most recently worked at Greene A.R.C. at
Ruff Creek. She was
an avid fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams and was a former member of the
Girl Scouts of
America. Funeral services were held at Behm Funeral Home, Inc., Waynesburg,
with Charles
Cheek officiating. Interment followed at Greene County Memorial Park. Memorial

Hershey Medical Center. He was born October 19, 1931 in Mifflin, Juniata
County, a son of the
late Robert S. and Edna R. [Wilson] Clark. He is survived by his wife M.
Joanne [Harris]
Clark, whom he married June 22, 1951. In addition to his wife, he is survived
by one son,
Robert H. Clark, Hershey; two daughters, Mrs. Michael S. [Sherrie L.] Imes,
HC 67, Mifflin,
and Mrs. Robert J. [Beth] Rowles, Mifflintown RR3; one brother, Gerald
R. Clark, Mifflintown
RR3; two sisters, Marilyn J. Horning and Sue I. Clark, both of Mifflin;
and six
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Vicki Marlene
Clark, and one sister,
Gloria Jean David. He was a 1949 graduate of Juniata Joint High School,
Mifflintown. He was a
member of Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia, Elks Lodge No.
663, Lewistown, Lost
Creek Golf Club, Oakland Mills, and Bethlehem Steel Bowling League for
30 years. He was a
past member and president of Mifflintown Borough Council for 20 years.
He retired in 1985 as
an industrial engineer from Bethlehem Steel, Steelton, and was serving
as office manager of
Rosewood Kitchens, Inc., Mifflintown, at the time of his death. Funeral
services were held
Friday at Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Harold N. Imes officiating.
Burial was
in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Memorial contributions

died Friday, July 4, 1997 at home. He was
a driver for Hess Trucking; a member of Fifth Street United Methodist Church,
a member and
soloist of its quartet, president of its choir and a member of its Ben
Wolfe Sunday School
Class; and a member of the Keystone Capital Chorus and Teamsters Union
Local 776. Surviving
are his wife, Linda P. Clouser; a son, Mitchell A. of Riverview, FL; a
daughter, Michelle L.
Cupp of Middletown; his mother, Anna Mary Oberlin Clouser of Harrisburg;
and a brother,
Herbert M. Jr. of Pineville, LA. He was a grandson of the late Carl and
Catherine Oberlin.

COUDRIET, SR., JOHN D. - John D. "Jack" Coudriet Sr., 57, of McAlisterville
RR2, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, September
2, 1997, in Perry County, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Born March 2,
1940, in Waterloo, he was a son of the late Beulah Behel and his stepfather,
the late
William Bollman. His wife, Sarah B. [Yorks] Coudriet, whom he married March
22, 1963,
survives. Also surviving, are: four sons, Frank D. Coudriet, John D. Coudriet
Jr., Todd A.
Coudriet and Michael S. Coudriet, all of McAlisterville; four stepbrothers,
Elmer Bollman,
Gallitzin, Richard Bollman, Portage, William Bollman, York and George Bollman,
Claysburg;
five grandchildren. In addition to his mother and stepfather, he was preceded
in death by a
sister, Helen Spade, in January of 1997, and a granddaughter, Tiffany Coudriet,
in 1993. He
was a Methodist by faith. He was a handyman for his entire neighborhood
and was employed by
Jay Fulkroad and Sons, Inc., McAlisterville, for the past eight years.
In his early life, he
was employed in the maintenance department at Empire Kosher Poultry Inc.,
Mifflintown, from
1963 to 1970 and at L.S. Lee, Inc., York, from 1970 to 1990. Services were
held Friday at
the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with Pastor Jack D.
Twombly
officiating. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville. Memorial

a.m. Thursday from Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with Pastor Sharon
Landis officiating.
Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00

was born November 16, 1916 in Blairs Mills, Huntingdon County, a son of
the late Shelburn and
Rose A. [Kauffman] Eckard. He is survived by his wife, E. Nan [Lytle] Eckard,
whom be married
October 31, 1942. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Hayes
W. Eckard Jr.,
Mifflintown RR3; one brother, Robert K. Eckard, Newport; two sisters, Marion
E. Dillman,
Mifflin, and Mrs. Rev. Donald [Violet] Pellman, Bloomsburg; and one granddaughter.
He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Eckard and Harry Eckard. He was
a 1934 graduate of
Mifflintown High School and attended Juniata College for two years. He
retired in 1977 as
office manager of Riverside Oil Co., Mifflintown. He was a member of Westminster
United
Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown, where he was a trustee and served as
treasurer of the
church for 12 years, and was head of the Men's Association for six years.
He had served as
auditor of Juniata County and as the chairman of the Juniata County Democratic
Party for
several terms. He was a member of Juniata County Sportsmen's Club and was
a volunteer for
Juniata County Meals on Wheels. He had served as justice of the peace for
Juniata County for
39 years and he was a notary public. He was a member of the U.S. Army Radio
Affiliate System
and various other amateur radio organizations. Funeral services will be
held at 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday, September 10 at Westminster United Presbyterian Church, Third
and Lemon streets;
Mifflintown, with Rev. William C. Mielke and Rev. Richard E. Wright officiating.
Burial will
be in the Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal RR2. Viewing will be Wednesday
from 1:00 p.m.

in the Medical
Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II, from which he received a medical
discharge. He
was a member of Brown's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville RR1. He
enjoyed flower
gardening, playing piano and cooking. Services were held Tuesday at the

School, Mifflintown,
and attended the Hiram G. Andrews School, Johnstown. She was a member of
Port Royal
Presbyterian Church. Earlier in life, she was a poster child for the March

died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 1997 at
Sunbury Community Hospital, where she was admitted after suffering a cerebrovascular
accident August 22, 1997. Born January 6,1913 at Terre Hill, Lancaster
County, she was
the daughter of the late Henry E. and Daisy M. [Neitz] Frantz. She was
first married to
Kenneth Fahnestock, who preceded her in death, and later married George
Finsterbush, who
also preceded her in death. She was educated at Swartz's Grammar School.
She was an
accomplished seamstress and was employed by several shirt factories and
dress factories,
including Richfield Shirt Factory and Mr. Carmen and Miss, Siren Dress
Factory, both of
the Selinsgrove area. She retired in 1975. She was a former member of Richfield
Mennonite Church and a member of Dauntless Hook and Ladder Fire Co. Ambulance
League and
Loyal Order of Moose auxiliary, Lodge No. 1173, both of Selinsgrove. She
enjoyed her
family and spent many hours of quality time with them. Surviving are two
sons, Kenneth
H. Fahnestock, Selinsgrove, and Karl E. Fahnestock, Columbia, SC; three
sisters, Cora
Neitz, Richfield, Minnie Shaffer, Selinsgrove RR3, and Naomi Carbaugh,
Fleetwood, PA;
three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by four
brothers, Harry [in infancy], John, Paul and Norman Frantz, and by one
sister, Mabel
Dressler. The funeral service was conducted Sunday from The George P. Garman
Funeral
Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. Raymond E. Neitz officiating.

School, Cocolamus.
He was a member of McAlisterville United Methodist Church and was a past
member of Fayette
Sportsmen's Club. He was a Fayette Township Supervisor and had worked on
the township highway
maintenance crew, before retiring due to illness. He as an avid fisherman
and hunter and
enjoyed cooking. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday
at the Ronald C.

the late Edwin A. and Elizabeth [Bay] Leister. Her husband, Willis A. Gilliland,

the last of her
immediate family, having been preceded in death by two sons, two brothers
and three sisters.
She had been employed by Pennsylvania Glass Sand. In her early life, she
was employed as a
secretary at Hershey Creamery. She was a live member of Grace United Methodist
Church for
over 60 years, was an active choir member, was a Sunday school teacher
in the beginners'
department for 30 years and was a member of Mifflin County Mother's Singers.

member of St.
John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills, where she had formerly
taught Sunday

the Commonwealth of

she is survived by
one son, Gary D. Goodling, Harrisburg; and three sisters, Miss Orpha Steffen,
Selinsgrove,
June Graybill, Richfield, and Charlotte Haines, Beavertown. She was preceded
in death by one
daughter, Christine L. Goodling, in 1963; and by one sister, Velma Steffen,
in childhood. The
funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, July 2, at 2:00 p.m. from
St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. A. Glenn Sinclair officiating.
Interment will
be made in St. John's Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, adjoining the church.
There will be no
viewing, but the family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until
the time of the

University and
Rutgers University, before earning his master's degree from Penn State
University. He was
Lutheran by faith and was a retired school administrator with Hazlet Township
public schools
in Monmouth County, NJ. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World
War II, was a Mason
and a member of Lewistown Lodge No. 203. Services were held Wednesday,
June 25 at J. Henry
Stuhr's Inc. Downtown Chapel, Charleston, SC. Interment was in Live Oak
Memorial Gardens,

Tuesday morning, August 26, 1997 at
his home. He was born June 18, 1915 at Spring Run, a son of the late Philip
A. and Anna
Shearer Hammond. He was married to the former Mildred L. Campbell, a guest
at Menno-Haven,
Chambersburg. He was a graduate of Fannett Township High School and Carlisle
Business School.
He was a farmer the greater part of his life and retired as manager of
the Lincoln Way East
office of Chambersburg Trust Company. He had served a number of years as
assistant county
treasurer, was a former Letterkenny employee and was a toll collector on
the Pennsylvania
Turnpike. He was a lifetime member of Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church,
Spring Run,
where he served as an elder and treasurer and taught the teenage class
and men's Bible
classes. He served for a number of years as secretary/treasurer of the
Fannett-Metal School
Board and was a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. In addition
to his wife, he
is survived by two sons, C. Philip Hammond of Waynesboro and Marvin L.
Hammond of Port Royal;
four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He
was the last of his
immediate family. Funeral services were held Saturday from his church with
Rev. Charles W.
Best officiating. Interment was in the Spring Run Cemetery. The John L.
Agett Funeral Home,
Dry Run, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made

John F. and Amanda [Brubaker] Heckman. His wife, Mary [Kauffman] Heckman,
whom he married
October 27, 1946, survives at Brookline Manor Retirement Center, Mifflintown.

attended Liberty School and owned and operated the Heckman family farm

Matthew Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Plainfield, and was a charter member of the Blain Lions
Club. He was the
widower of Helen Gutshall Hench, who died Jan. 1, 1997. Surviving are a
daughter, Carrie J.
Milligan of Newville; three sons, M. Dale of Elliottsburg, Harry L. of
New Bloomfield and
Alvus E. of Palmyra; a brother, John W. of Carlisle; nine grandchildren;
15 great-
grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by two grandsons.

granddaughters. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded

a son, Samuel A. Hoopes, in 1947. She was a member of Alfarata Lutheran

late Charles E. and Cora A. (Hench) Jacobs. He retired as a drill press
operator from
Brandywine Fibre Products Co., and was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was the widower
of Gloria H. Laird Jacobs. Surviving are a son, Wilson E. Jr., and a daughter,
Mary Ann
Kloepfer, both of Upland; two sisters, Mary A. George of Carlisle and Stella
Burns of

Jose, CA; a

A son, Thomas,
preceded him in death. He was a U.S. Navy warrant officer first class,
a wharfinger with the
Long Beach Harbor and a Pearl Harbor survivor of World War II. He was a

Associati on; D.A.V;
and the Green Valley chapter of the Retired Officers Association. Arrangements

late Samuel Ira and Olive [Neiman] Haines Kurtz. Her husband, Paul Eugene
Kanour, whom she
married April 25, 1930, died March 28, 1977. Surviving are: children, Mrs.

grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by

since 1970 and
before that bad lived in Fairless Hills. In her early life, she was employed
as a telephone
operator for Bell Telephone Co., Lewistown, for nearly 15 years. She was
later a homemaker.
She was a 1927 graduate of Burnham High School and was a member of Christ's
United Lutheran
Church, Millmont RR2 and Laurelton Women's Club. Services were held Thursday
at the James L.
Schwartz Home for Funerals, with Rev. Paul L. Kampa officiating. Interment
was in Lincoln

KECK, RICHARD L. ------ Richard L. Keck, 64, of Toboyne Township, died
at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 1997 at the
Todd Home and Rehabilitation Center, Carlisle, following a brief illness.
He was born
November 27, 1932 in Mountville, PA, to the late Leonard Keck and the late
Mary Sachmann.
April 29, 1987 he married Carole A. [Simon] Strayer Keck. He was employed
by the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania as a food inspector before retiring. He was a member of
Whispering Pines
Hunting Camp in Perry County and American Legion Post No. 0185, Mount Joy.
He served in the
U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by a son,
Brian R. Keck,
Allentown; a daughter, Glenda M. Gatchell, Lancaster; two grandsons; stepmother,
Mary Keck of
Lancaster County; stepchildren, Debra J. Stroman, Etters, Jill L. Schaeffer,
Windsor, PA.,
Marc A. Strayer, Red Lion; eight step-grandchildren; and one brother, Ronald
F. Keck ,
Lititz. Funeral services were held Friday at the Burg Funeral Home, Inc.,
Red Lion, with
Pastor Howard W. Fritz officiating. Burial was in Susquehanna Memorial
Gardens. A memorial
service will also be held Thursday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. at East Waterford
Presbyterian

at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born August 26, 1922

daughter of the late Isaac D. and Gertrude B. [Shirk] Fogleman. She attended
Fayette High
School, McAlisterville. She is survived by her husband, Paul R. Lauver,
whom she married
December 23, 1950. She is also survived by a brother: Kenneth D. Fogleman,
Mifflintown RR5,
and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers,
Daniel, Leland, Melvin
and, Harold Fogleman; and three sisters, Margaret Zimmerman, Ella Fogleman
and E. Josephine
Benner. She was a member of Free Spring Church of the Brethren, Mifflintown
RR2; TOPS,
Richfield; Eastern Star, Mifflintown Chapter, and was very active in the
Ladies Auxiliary of
Delaware Township Fire Department. She had worked many years as a seamstress
for L.
Shellenberger and Sons, McAlisterville and East Salem; Cluett-Peabody,
Lewistown and RAE-SAL,
Port Royal. The funeral will beat 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 30 at the
Ronald C. Sheaffer
Funeral Home, McAlisterville with Pastors Terry Smith and Michael Benner
officiating.
Interment will follow in East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1. Memorial

daughter of the late John H. and Magdalene [Brubaker] Lauver. Surviving
is a sister, Edna
Kratzer, Richfield. She as preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Lauver
and John Lauver and
two sisters, Verta Niemond and Mabel Leister. She attended Evendale School
and worked as a
seamstress at both the McAlisterville Shirt Factory and the Richfield Shirt
Factory. She was
also a housekeeper for a family in Lancaster for several years. She enjoyed
flowers and
gardening. She was a member of Boyer Mennonite Church, Middleburg RR2,
the Juniata branch of
the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind and Richfield Senior Citizens
Center. Services
were held Monday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville.
Interment was in
Lauver's Mennonite Cemetery, HC 63, Richfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial

in a pedestrian-pickup truck accident Sunday
evening, August 24, 1997, along Route 104 in Susquehanna Township, Juniata
County. He was
born in Sunbury May 18, 1965, the son of Robert and Sara [Benner] Leach
of Liverpool RR2. He
was a member of St. Thomas Independent Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2.
In addition to his
parents, he is survived by one sister, Crystal P. Gemberling of Liverpool
RR2; a niece, Hope;
and a nephew, Jimmy. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lisa A. Leach.
The funeral

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Lewistown, was
a life member of
Lewistown Elks Club, a life member of Brooklyn Hose Co. and a member of
Lewistown Station
Gang. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday at Sacred Heart
of Jesus Catholic
Church, Lewistown, with Rev. Thaddeus B. Strzelec officiating. Interment
was in Juniata
Memorial Park, Lewistown. Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, Lewistown,
was in charge of
arrangements. Rosary services were held at the funeral home. Graveside
military rites were

Mennonite Church, where she taught the pre-kindergarten Sunday school class
and was a member
of the Ladies' Sunday School Class No. 4. She was also a member of Richfield
Ambulance
League. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and spending time with her niece
and three nephews.
Services were held Tuesday at Richfield Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jerry
R. O'Connell

at his residence in Tampa, FL. Born May 7, 1934 at Mt. Pleasant Mills,
Snyder County, he
was the son of the late Robert I. and Florence [Kratzer] Longacre. He graduated
in 1952
from Freeburg High School, then entered the U.S. Air Force, where he served
as a medic for
20 years. He served during the Viet Nam War and later was employed by the
Veterans
Administration Hospital, Tampa. He was a member of Lake Magdalene United
Methodist Church
where he was an active member, including his Sunday school class and the
men's group that
he supported. He enjoyed traveling and history. Surviving are one brother;
Edwin I.
Longacre and his wife, Eleanor, of Kreamer; two sisters, Rosella I. Troutman
and her
husband, Rev. Clair R., of McAlisterville RR1, and Sandra A. Kratzer and
her husband,
David, of Beavertown; four nephews; three nieces; two great-nephews; and
two great-nieces.
The funeral service was conducted Thursday from the George P. Garman Funeral
Home, Mt.
Pleasant Mills, with his brother-in-law, Rev. Clair R. Troutman, officiating.

preceded her in death
December 31, 1960. Mrs. Lyter graduated in 1926 from Millerstown High School,
furthered her
education at Millersville State Teachers College and received her teaching
certificate from
Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove. For many years she taught school at
Susquehanna
Elementary School, Juniata County, and taught in the grammar schools in
her area of Juniata
County. A life member of St. James United Methodist Church, Millerstown
RR2, she taught
Sunday school and served as pianist when needed. She was also a member
of the Millerstown
Ambulance League and enjoyed reading. Surviving are five children: Ronald
E. Lyter, Willow
Street, PA; Gerald M. Lyter, Millerstown RR2; John W. Lyter, at home; Connie
L. Byers,
Millerstown RR1; and Sally A. Losch, China; one brother, Roy Gelnett, Millerstown;
two
sisters, Violet Light, Millerstown and Sara Hoover, Millerstown RR2; 11
grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold
and Oscar
Gelnett; one grandson, Randall Scott Lyter; and one granddaughter, Rosie

victim of an apparent homicide. Born October 26, 1946 in Detroit, MI, she
was a daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Perry of Australia. Her husband, Edgar H. Meiser,
whom she married
April 11, 1980, survives. Also surviving are: children, Tracy Thompson,
Sacramento, CA,
Kenneth Mark Jolley, Midland, TX; maternal grandmother, Jean Rose, El Cajon,
CA; a
brother, Mark Perry, Dallas, TX; three grandchildren. She and her husband
lived in the
Thompsontown area until 1986 and later in Australia until their return
to Texas in 1991.
She had worked as a medical secretary and in social services in Australia.
In Texas, she
was active with the Salvation Army, where she was the emergency shelter
manager. She also
worked with the homeless, abused and did volunteer work with the Veterans
Hospital, Big
Spring, TX. She attended schools in Michigan and completed two years of
psychology at
Mansfield State University. She was a member of Turkey Valley United Methodist
Church,
Millerstown RR2. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Turkey
Valley United
Methodist Church, with Rev. Salvatore E. Buonocore officiating. Interment
will be in the
church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday
at the

Locust Grove Village. He was a retired farmer and was also retired from

Poultry, Inc. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States

Merchant Marines. He was a member of Newport American Legion and Centre

Miller, in 1952; two
brothers, Carl Hower and Ben Hower; and one sister, Carolyn Hower. She
was a member of
Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown. She retired from Mifflin-Juniata
Visiting Nurses and
prior to that had been employed by Brookline Manor Convalescent Home and
Mary Coldren's
Personal Care Home, both of Mifflintown RR1. Services were held Monday
at Brown Funeral Home,
Mifflintown, with Rev. Anna M. Ritter officiating. Interment was in Westminster
Presbyterian
Cemetery, Mifflintown. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity

He was a machine operator for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation,

and two sisters, Edna
Marion Shellenberger. He was the last surviving World War I veteran from
Juniata County,
having served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in Company 2 First Air Service
Mechanics
Regiment. He had been a glass cutter and co-owner of the former Potter's
Garage, Mifflintown.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, Crawford-Brubaker
VFW Post No. 5863,
Mifflintown Rotary Club, a charter member of American Legion Post No. 298,
Mifflintown, and
was the last original member of the Juniata Gun Club. Services were held

and Vance L.

Methodist Women and the Marysville Fire Company Auxiliary. She was the
widow of Earl W. Roth.
Surviving are three daughters, Tierna J. Roth, Denise A. Smith and Patricia
N. Radabaugh, and
two sons, Gary L. and Jerome T., all of Marysville; two sisters, Dawn M.
Baker of Marysville
and Dorothy Hershey of Harrisburg; a brother, Merle Seiger of Hornerstown;
seven
grandchildren; two step-grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren;

p.m. Wednesday, September 10, 1997 at Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport,
where he was
admitted September 1, 1997. He had been in failing health since June 11,
1997. Born February
23, 1927 at Middlecreek Township, Snyder County, he was the son of Dorothy
(Stuck] Roush,
Middleburg, and the late Russell P. Roush Sr. October 31, 1952 he married
the former Elsie M.
Shaffer, who survives. Mr. Roush was educated at Meiser's Grammar School,
Middlecreek
Township. He enlisted in the U.S Army and served during World War II. He
initially was
employed by Faylor/Middlecreek Industries, Winfield, as a truck driver.
He then was a laborer
for Stahl's Limestone Quarry, Mt. Pleasant Mills, and from 1969 to 1971
both he and his wife
operated Roush's Restaurant at Mt. Pleasant Mills. The majority of his
working years were
spent catering and butchering. At the time of his death, he was semi-retired,
as he [in good
health] continued to do butchering and catering. He loved to spend any
spare time with
friends and family. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Mt. Pleasant
Mills, where he was a former church council member; a life member of Kreamer
Volunteer Fire
Company; and a member of Middleburg Lodge No. 619, Free and Accepted Masons,
Ancient and
Accepted Scottish Rite - Valley of Harrisburg, Zembo Temple, Harrisburg,
Tall Cedars of
Lebanon-Sunbury Forest No. 65, Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1173, Selinsgrove,
American
Association of Retired Persons, Dauntless Hook and Ladder Fire Company
Ambulance League,
Selinsgrove, and Medic 55 and Medic 60 of Evangelical Community Hospital,
Lewisburg.

Thursday evening, July 31, 1997, from injuries
sustained in an accident on his farm. He was born November 10, 1937 in
Middlecreek Township,
a son of Dorothy F. [Mull] Rowe Bilger of Kreamer and the late Carl Samuel
Rowe. April 7,
1962, he married the former Patsy J. Hollenbach. Mr. Rowe was a 1955 graduate
of Middleburg
High School. He was a farmer all his life and farmed on the farm where
he was born. Mr. Rowe
was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kreamer, where he served on
the church council.
He was a member of Snyder County Farmer's Association and Middlecreek Township
Planning
Commission; a life member of Kreamer Volunteer Fire Company; and a charter
member of
Middlecreek Valley Antique Association. Mr. Rowe collected antique farm
equipment. In
addition to his wife and mother, surviving are one son, David A. Rowe and
his wife Ginger of
Richfield RR2; one daughter, Pamela J. and her husband John Krohn of Selinsgrove
RR3; one
grandson, Timothy Krohn of Selinsgrove RR3; three stepsisters, Agnes Butcosk
of Kreamer,
Georgiana Knouse of Frederick MD, and Norma Miller of New Market, MD. He
was preceded in
death by one brother, C. Richard Rowe, in 1995, and his stepfather, George
Bilger. The

Manor. Born August
29, 1920 in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late
James Russell and
Sara Catherine Swanger Rumberger. He was preceded in death by a sister,
Cora Jane Rumberger.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, he was a graduate
of Thompsontown
High school and Central Penn Business School. He was a supply clerk, retiring
from the
Harrisburg State Hospital in 1982 after 25 years of service. The funeral
was held Saturday,
July 5 at Guss Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Stephen A. Kovac officiating.
Interment
was in Locust Run Cemetery. Military graveside services were provided by
the Juniata County
Veterans Council.

1997, at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. Born March 6, 1898 in Delaware
Township,
Juniata County, he was a son of the late William and Annie [Houtz] Schlegel.
He was preceded
in death by his wife, Elsie [Frymoyer] Schlegel, on March 10, 1979. Surviving
are: two sons,
Wayne E. Schlegel of Thompsontown RR1 and William K. Schlegel of Mechanicsburg;
six
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was
preceded in death by a
brother, Marlin Schlegel, and a grandson. He attended East Salem Elementary
School and except
for one year when he was employe d by the Pennsylvania State Highway Department,
he had
worked in a general merchandise store, owning his own store in East Salem
and then later in
life he worked at the W.E. Schlegel Inc., Grocery & Hardware, Thompsontown
RR1. He was a
member of East Salem United Methodist Church where he was a member of the
administrative
board. He was a member of Tennis Lodge No. 371, Free and Accepted Masons,
Thompsontown and
the East Salem Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Services
were held
Sunday at East Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry A. Sheldon
officiating.
Interment followed in East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1. The Ronald

Home, McAlisterville was in charge of arrangements. A Masonic service was
conducted Saturday

SCHLEGEL, MARVIN WILSON - Dr. Marvin Wilson Schlegel, 87, of Virginia
Beach, VA, formerly of Thompsontown, died July
8, 1997 in Virginia Beach. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dr.
Dorothy Badders
Schlegel, and two sisters, Gwendolyn Schlegel Cramer of Landenberg, PA,
and Mabel Schlegel
Sherwood of McClure, along 9 with numerous nieces. His brother, Jerauld,
preceded him in
death. He held a B.A. degree from Susquehanna University and M.A. and Ph.D.
degrees from
Columbia University in American history and government. He did post-doctoral
study at the
University of Vienna, the Sorbonne and the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University
at
Frankfort, Germany. He traveled extensively in Western Europe and the Near
East and spent
the summer of 1964 in Eastern Europe and Russia. Dr. Schlegel began his
professional career
in 1929 as assistant principal and teacher of social studies at Thompsontown
and from 1939
until 1942 was reference assistant in the Archives Division, Pennsylvania
State Library.
From 1942 until 1947 he served as assistant state historian, Pennsylvania
Historical and
Museum Commission, and was in charge of Pennsylvania World War II history
program. He was
head of the History and Government Department of the College of William
and Mary [St.
Helena Extension] from 1947 to 1948 and joined the faculty of Longwood
College as assistant
professor for the 1948-49 school year. In 11054 he was promoted to full
professor and
remained with the college through the 1965-66 school year. In 1966 the
Schlegels moved to
Virginia Beach and he and his wife began teaching at Norfolk State University.
They retired
in 1976. While he lived in Farmville, he was president of the Prince Edward
Council of
Human Relations. When Prince Edward County fought integration and closed
its public
schools, the council tried to develop better communications between Blacks
and Whites. When
the community's churches began housing private schools, the Schlegels withdrew
their
memberships. Dr. Schlegel has written several books, including Conscripted
City: Norfolk in
World War II; Virginia on Guard: Civilian Defense and the State Militia
in the Second World
War; and Ruler of the Readings: The Life of Franklin B. Gowen, 1836-1889.
His coauthored
books include Cavalier Commonwealth: History and Government in Virginia
and Norfolk:
Historic Southern Port. In addition, his writings were included in numerous
books,
bulletins, pamphlets, periodicals and publications. He was an avid cook,
bridge player,
photographer and sports enthusiast and led a busy life despite having had
polio as an
infant and using crutches and a wheelchair. He was also a member of the
Southern Historical
Association, of which he served as chairman; National Audubon Society,
Virginia Beach
chapter; Common Cause; and was a Democratic city committeeman in Virginia
Beach. He
received an Alumni Achievement Medal from Susquehanna University in 1977.
Following
retirement he was active as a phone counselor for the Contact Tidewater
Crisis Intervention
Hotline. He remained active in Kiwanis and his church until very recently.
A memorial
scholarship fund has been established in his name. Contributions can be

Gertrude L. [Mackell] Cummings. She was the widow of Albert P. Schlegel,
who died September
19, 1989. She is survived by two sons, Michael H. Renninger, Oakland Mills
and William J.
Renninger, Dover, DE; one daughter, Mrs. Gerald E. [Joyce A.] Schlegel,
Mexico, PA; three
sisters, Geraldine Drass, Mifflintown RR4, Twila Woodcock, Altoona, and
Betty Hockenberry,
Mifflintown RR3; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death
by two brothers, four sisters and one great-grandson, Dustin Syjud. She
had attended Cedar
Grove Brethren in Christ Church, Mifflintown RR4. She had worked at Empire
Kosher Poultry,
Inc., Mifflintown, and in earlier life had been employed by the American
Viscose Corp.,

the late James G. and Ada M. [Bassler] Willis. In 1937 she married Boyd
N. Shallenberger,
who died June 17, 1977. She is survived by two sons, N. James Shallenberger,
Plains, MT,
and, Roger Shallenberger, McAlisterville RR2; a brother, Robert Willis,
McAlisterville
RR1; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She
graduated from Fayette High School, McAlisterville, in 1928. She was a
lifetime member of
Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, where she had been a deacon and had
taught Sunday
school for many years, She had been a member of the Air Warning Service
Plane Spotters
during World War II. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and gardening.
The funeral was
conducted Friday at Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, McAlisterville RR1,
with Rev.
Elwood O. Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Goodwill Cemetery,
McAlisterville RR1.

October 20, 1954 to the former Melda R. Dietz, who survives. He was educated
at Stoney Run
Schoolhouse in Juniata County. Mr. Swartz retired on disability in April
1976 after 21 years
in building maintenance for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department
of Property and
Supplies, Harrisburg. Protestant by faith, he was a member of the Richfield
Ambulance League
and Fire Company, enjoyed traveling to Canada to fish and enjoyed hunting
in this area. In
addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Scott D. Swartz and his
wife Heather of
Richfield RR2; two daughters, Alice L. Nace and her husband Dale of Millerstown
RR2 and Mary
Reich, Newport; one brother, James E. Swartz, McVeytown; and four grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary A. Swartz, at birth, and four
brothers, Edward,
John R., Adam B. and Nevin Swartz. The funeral service was conducted Monday
from the George
P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. Timothy W. Bingman

daughter of the late Roy and Ethel [Parks] Hamer. Her husband, John P.
Troutman, whom she
married October 24, 1936, survives. Also surviving are: brothers and sister,
Della Getz,
Lewistown RR4, Frank Hamer, North Versailles, William Hamer, Danville,
VA; three
grandchildren; a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a daughter,
Donna Troutman
Sheaffer, a granddaughter and two brothers. In her early life, she was
employed at Goss Candy
Store and Joseph's Dress Shop, both of Lewistown. She was later a homemaker.
Private
interment was held at the convenience of the family at Juniata Memorial
Park, Lewistown.

In her early life, she was a waitress at various area restaurants. She
was last employed as a
sleever at Cluett Peabody Shirt Factory, Lewistown, with 13 years of service,
retiring in
1966. She was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and AARP, Services

McAlisterville, she was a daughter of the late Keemer E. A. Sr. and Emily
R. [Carwell] Watts.
She attended Fayette Elementary School, McAlisterville, and was a 1931
graduate of Fayette
High School, McAlisterville. She is survived by four brothers, Keemer E.
A. Watts Jr.,
Thompsontown RR1, William R. Watts, McAlisterville RR1, Clair H. Watts,
Honey Grove and Lloyd
Watts, McAlisterville RR1; two sisters, Margaret J. Newcomer, Mt. Joy,
and Winifred W.
Flickinger, McAlisterville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased
by a
brother, Wesley W. Watts, and a sister, Mary Watts. She retired in December
1993 from the
Navy Ships Parts Control Center, Mechanicsburg, where she was an inventory
management
specialist. She was previously employed at Olmstead Air Force Base, Middletown;
Federal
Rationing office, Mifflintown; and Pennsylvania Department of Revenue,
Harrisburg. She was a
member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville; Ladies Auxiliary,
Crawford/
Brubaker American Legion Post No. 5863, Mifflintown, National Association
of Retired Federal
Employees; AARP; and Fayette Fire and Ambulance Department, McAlisterville.
The funeral was
Monday, August 25 at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville,
with Rev. Edward
Watts officiating. Interment followed in Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery,
McAlisterville.

WILLIAMS, CLARICE ----- Clarice Kerstetter Williams, 81, of Anaheim,
CA, formerly of Milton, PA, died July 18, 1997
of natural causes. She was born in Richfield to John Wilson and Gertrude
Mae [Hillegass]
Kerstetter. Clarice graduated from Milton High School, attended Catherman's
Business College
in Maryland and worked as an executive secretary in New York, Boston and
Detroit and as a
legal secretary in Silver Springs, MD. She married Donald T. Williams of
Williamsport in
January 1942. In May of that year, he enlisted with the Air Force. After
World War II, they
moved to Detroit, where their children, Steven and Susan, were born. The
family subsequently
lived in Baltimore, Silver Springs, MD and Anaheim. Clarice was a devout
Catholic who loved
children. She taught a first grade catechism class and served as president
of the PTA in a
couple of these cities. She was an accomplished piano player and singer,
singing on a radio
program called "The Twilight Twins" in Harrisburg. She made sure that music
was a big part of
their family life. She was a wonderful cook and hostess and loved to travel.
Clarice is
survived by her husband Don of Anaheim; son Steven of Huntersville, NC;
daughter Susan of
Alhambra, CA; daughter-in-law Candy of Huntersville; grandson Scott of
Huntersville; sister
and brother-in-law Vera and Fred Klobe of Lewisburg; brother and sister-in-law
Verdun and
Daisy Kerstetter of Williamsport; sister-in-law Ruth of Liverpool; and
countless nieces,
nephews and cousins in many parts of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in
death by her brother
Blaine Kerstetter of McAlisterville, sister and brother-in-law Blanche
and Bill Diehl of
Milton and her granddaughter Michelle of Westminister, CA. Services were
held July 22 and 23
at Dimond and Sons Mettler Mortuary in Garden Grove, CA, and at St. Boniface
Church, Anaheim.
She was placed to rest in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Huntington Beach, CA.
Many family and
friends attended, including Sue Byers of Millerstown, Judy Barner of Liverpool,
Phil Williams
of Williamsport, Susan K. of Alhambra, along with her mother Mary, brother
David and wife
Cindy of San Jose, CA, and Vic and Jan Bufo of Tucson, AZ. Her children,
Steven and Susan,
sang one of her favorite songs at the gravesite, "O Danny Boy," one she
had taught them when
they were very young. Her first public song was sung in Daniels Church,
Richfield, and it was
"A Sunbeam for Jesus." Her headstone, along with the facts of being a beloved
wife, mother
and grandmother, will also read "A Sunbeam for Jesus."

Creek Mennonite
Church, Mifflintown RR2, the Sewing Circle of the church and various quilting
groups in the
area. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Lost Creek Mennonite
Church. Interment
will be in Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Mifflintown RR2. Family will
receive friends from
7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third Street, Mifflintown,
and from
9:30 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. In lieu of
