great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Bruce Allen, October 22, 1987;
a son, Jack
Allen; and six brothers. She was a homemaker and a member of McCoysville
Presbyterian Church,
McCoysville. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 16 from Henry
Funeral Home, Honey

Oct. 28, 1918, in
Van Wert, he was a son of the late Edgar Luther and Mary [Kerstetter] Arentz.
His wife,
Arvilla R. [Bair] Arentz of Saxton, survives. Also surviving are: children,

Star Route, Mifflin, Sandra Eileen Howard, Mifflintown RR3; stepchildren,
Deb Leonard,

Boalsburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren;

great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Arentz,
four brothers and
three, sisters. He was a member of the First Church of God, Saxton. He
was a veteran of World
War II, having served in the U.S. Army. In his early life, he was employed
by the West Palm
Beach Department of Corrections and the Indiana Youth Center. Later, he
worked various
construction jobs and worked for R&R Vending Co., Saxton. Services
were held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Paul
Bowen officiating.
Interment was in the Grandview Cemetery, Saxton RR. Full military graveside
services were
conducted.

Faith Lutheran Church, Richfield RR 1, the Millerstown Moose Lodge and
the Liverpool Fire
Company. He was the widower of Donna Fawver. Surviving are a son,
William J. of Liverpool
RR 1, two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

were held Tuesday, Aug. 15, in Garman Funeral Home. Burial was in Faith

[McMeen] Lawson. Her

at 4:15 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 1995 at
Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. She was born July 29, 1908 in Thompsontown,
Juniata
County, the daughter of the late J.P. and Ida Virginia [Keller] Garman.
She was married to
Elmer E. Beers December 11, 1926. He preceded her in death December 24,
1964. She is survived
by one daughter, Mrs. Wayne [Betty] Nearhood, Thompsontown, and a sister,
Jennie G. Regester,
Newport. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a three-year-old
son, John
E. Beers; two brothers, George P. Garman and John Garman; and one sister,
Mary Freed. She was
a member of Brown's United Methodist Church, Cocolamus. She attended Smith
School,
Thompsontown. She was retired from Thompsontown Industries, where she was
a seamstress for
more than 30 years. She was a member of the Intemational Ladies' Garment
Worker's Union,
since 1946. She enjoyed reading, quilting, sewing, cooking and helping
others. The funeral
service was held Monday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville,
with Rev.
Forrest Gordon officiating. Interment followed in the Goodwill Cemetery,
McAlisterville.

BERRY II, GEORGE GRANT - George Grant Berry II, 55, of McAlisterville
RR1, died suddenly of natural causes at 3:27
p.m. Monday, September 4, 1995, at Lewistown Hospital. He was born in Dover,
NJ, February
13, 1940; the son of Ramona M. [Ball] Berry of McAlisterville RR1 and the
late Frank M.
Berry. He graduated from Roxbury High School, Ledgewood, NJ, in 1957. After
graduating from
high school he entered the United States Marine Corps, where he earned
the rank of corporal
and served as an amphibious recon instructor at USNAB Little Creek, Norfolk,
VA, until his
discharge in 1961. In 1971 he earned a BA in psychology from William and
Paterson College
and in 1975 he was an MA candidate at Rivier College, NH. His wife, Carla
G. Berry, whom he
married December 21, 1979, survives. Also surviving are four sons, Christopher
Berry,
Lakewood, CO, 2nd Lieutenant, USMC Guy Berry, Quantico, VA, Derek Berry,
West Chester, PA,
and John Berry Lancaster; one daughter Aurora Murray, Miami, FL; one sister,
Patricia
Skyler, West Paris, MA; and one grandchild. He was the director of Berry
Unlimited limited
[Rehabilitation/Counseling], McAlisterville, which he founded in 1994.
He was also a senior
partner with Avalon Affiliates, R.C., Inc., Habilitation Specialists, McAlisterville,
which
he cofounded in 1991. He was formerly employed at Milton S. Hershey/Penn
State University
Hospital Rehabilitation Center's Independent Living Program. Prior to these
positions, for
17 years, he held various retail management positions with K-Mart, Zayre
and Rickel Home
Centers in New England, Illinois, Georgia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
He was an avid
hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was a member of the board of directors
of Association for
Retarded Citizens, Juniata Area, Juniata AGAPE Ministries, Inc. [JAM],
Mifflin, and the
Juniata Veterans Council. He was also a member of American Counseling Association,
Juniata
Valley Chamber of Commerce and a life member and past commandant of Marine
Corps League of
PA, Juniata Valley Detachment No. 687. The funeral service was held Thursday
at the Ronald
C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville. Interment was at the convenience
of the family.

Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. He was a member of Messiah
Lutheran Church,
Mifflintown, and Crawford-Brubaker Post VFW No. 5863, Mifflintown. Funeral

p.m., Wednesday, August 2, 1995 at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg,
where she had been
a surgical patient since her admission on August 1. Mrs. Brown was born
at Richfield RR1,
Monroe Township, Juniata County, January 22, 1918. She was the daughter
of he late McClellan
and Mary Clotfelter Stroup. She was married to William Arthur Brown, who
preceded her in
death October 20, 1986. She attended the Gordon Schoolhouse at West
Perry Township. She was
employed in excess of 20 years for Miss Siren Dress Factory, Selinsgrove,
where she was a
machine operator. She was forced to an early retirement in the mid-1960s
due to ill health.
Mrs. Brown was a charter member Richfield Evangelical Methodist Church,
was a former
superintendent of the Children's Department and taught Sunday school classes.
She and her
late husband had served as custodians of the church for many years.
She was a member of the
American Association of Retired Persons and Richfield Fire Co. and Ambulance
League. During
her leisure time she spent many hours reading and was an accomplished flower
gardener. She is
survived by two sons, Lloyd "Sonny" Brown, McAlisterville RR1, and Richard
L. Brown,
Richfield RR1, one brother, Harold Stroup, Lewisburg RR3; five sisters,
Catherine Deitz, Faye
Dressler, Lois Brandt and Mildred Peters, all of Liverpool, and Claris,
Knouse, Richfield
RR1; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown was preceded
in death by
one daughter, Fern Brown, in infancy in 1937; three brothers, Donald, Nevin,
and Charles
Stroup [in infancy]; and two sisters, Rosetta 'Keister and Pauline Haubert.
The funeral
service was conducted Sunday at Richfield Evangelical Methodist Church
with Rev. Kenneth E.
Walter officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The George P. Garman
Funeral Home,
Inc., Mt. Pleasant Mills, was in charge of arrangements.

was a 1949 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. She was

held at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, June 27 at 11:40 p.m. at Sara Todd
Memorial Home, Carlisle. He was born in Greenwood Township, November 7,
1905, the son of the
late John and Margaret [Foffy] Chubb. He was a refired farmer and had also
been employed in
road construction. He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ,
Millerstown RR2.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, and was preceded in death
by four brothers:
John, Charles, Jacob and Leroy, and a sister, Edith Yetter. The funeral
service was held
Saturday, July 1 at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills,
with Rev. Paul E.
Swartz officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's United Church of Christ Cemetery,

He was born
October 28, 1891 in Walker Township, Juniata County, to the late Samuel
and Eliza Jane
[Sieber] Cleck. His wife, Mary R. [Wirt] Cleck, preceded him in death June
23, 1984. He is
survived by one son, Marlin W. Cleck, Belleville; one daughter, Mrs. Edward
[Marian R.]
Logan, Mechanicsburg; three grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was the last of
his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, one
sister and one
grandson, Thomas Logan. He was a member of Centre Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Mifflintown
RR2, and its Men's Sunday School Class. In earlier life he was employed
by the Pennsylvania
Department of Highways and did construction work. He retired in 1956 from
the American
Viscose Corp., Lewistown. He then worked as a custodian for the Juniata
County School
District at Walker Elementary School, retiring in 1971 at the age of 80.
Funeral services
were held Friday from Centre Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Kerry
Aucker and Rev.
Claude R. Baublitz officiating. Burial was in the Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown

Lewistown Hospital. Born April 25, 1905, in Mifflintown, he was a son of
the late William H.
and Maria [Rowel Clemens. His wife, Zella M. [Wagner] Clemens, died June
23, 1995. Surviving
are: children, Mrs. Harry [Evelyn] Myers, Lewistown, Marvin R. Clemens,
Lewistown, Dr. Daryl
J. Clemens, formerly of Palm Springs, CA, currently of Lewistown; eight
grandchildren; nine

his immediate
family, having been preceded in death by ten brothers and six sisters.
He retired from the
spinning department of the American Viscose Corp., Lewistown, in 1970,
with 45 years of
service. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewistown,
and United Commercial
Travelers Council 591. Services were held Thursday at Hoenstine Funeral

County July 3, 1995. He was born January 22, 1971 in Derry Township, Mifflin
County, to Harry
E. and Jackie D. [Powley] Coder, Mifflintown RR3 who survive. Also surviving
are one son,
Kyle Ross Coder, Waterloo; one brother, Harry E. Coder Jr., HC 67, Mifflin;
maternal
grandparents, Earl H. "Skip" and Janet B. Powley, Mifflintown RR2, and
his fiancee, Kelli J.
Jones, Mifflintown RR4. He was a 1989 graduate of Juniata High School,
Mifflintown, where he
played football on the Tri Valley League championship team, and the team
was runner-up in the
PIAA Triple AAA District 3 Championship game. He was also an avid hunter
and fisherman. He

8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 4 at Polyclinic Medical
Center, Harrisburg. Born January 23, 1920 in Mt. Union, he was the son

and Laura [Hartman] Coons. His wife Hazel [Ritchey] Coons survives. Other

Enola; two sisters,

He served
in World War II with the United States Army, having received the E.A.M.E.

brothers, and three sisters. She is the last of the Swartz family. She
attended Dimmsville
Grammar School and Millersville State College, where she earned her licensed
practical nurse
certificate. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse by Harrisburg
State Hospital for
12 years and as a seamstress for Shellenberger and Son's garment factories
in McAlisterville
and East Salem until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Lost Creek
Presbyterian
Church. The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 10 at 2:30 p.m.

she was the
daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Shellenberger Pellman, She was
married to Roy
Shirk Forster, who preceded her in death December 18, 1970. Mrs. Forster
attended the
Richfield schools. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, she was
employed at the
former Shellenberger Shirt Factory, Richfield. She was a member of St.
John Lutheran
Church, Richfield, and was also a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
Women of the
church, the American Association of Retired Persons, Richfield Senior Citizens
and
Richfield Ambulance League. Mrs. Forster is survived by two children, Alice
E. Renn,
Sunbury RR1, and R. Alan Forster, Richfield RR1; seven grandchildren; eight
great-
grandchildren; and one greatgreat-granddaughter. Mrs. Forster was the last
of her immediate
family. She was preceded in death by one son, Laurence Ferster; five brothers,

at Sunbury, Northumberland County, she was the daughter of the late Mamie
Hockenbrock, and
foster parents, the late Solomon and Mary Hockenbrock. She was married
to Sterl "Governor"
Fisher, who died October 10, 1989. Mrs. Fisher attended the Juniata County
schools. She
was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of St. Peter's United Church
of Christ,
Millerstown RR2, where she was a member of the Women's Guild, and was a
member of the
Richfield Ambulance League. Mrs. Fisher enjoyed reading and was an accomplished
seamstress
and quilter. Surviving are two sons, Leroy G. Fisher, Mt. Pleasant Mills
RR2, and Donald
P. Fisher, Millerstown RR2; one daughter, Shirley P. Blett, Kreamer; five
grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by four
grandchildren and

GARMAN, RUSSELL H. ---- Russell H. "Mike" Garman, 90, of Richfield,
died at 8:15 p.m., Tuesday, August 15, 1995, at
Penn Lutheran Village Nursing Home, Selinsgrove, where he was admitted
nearly one month ago.
Born April 17, 1905 in Juniata County, he was the son of the late Foster
H. and Maude
Hornberger Garman. He was married March 23, 1930 to the former Irene Teats,
who preceded him
in death June 20, 1993. He attended Crossroads Grammar Schoolhouse in Snyder
County. He was
self-employed at Richfield, as owner/operator of the former Esso gas station
and later
managed the former hotel at Mt. Pleasant Mills. Largely his entire life
was devoted to
farming and was a cattle dealer until his retirement in 1964. His leisure
activities included
hunting and fishing. He was a member and former church council member of
St. John Lutheran
Church, Richfield. He was a member of Richfield Ambulance League and a
life member of
Richfield Sportsmen's Club. He is survived by a son, Richard E. Garman,
Elma, NY; two
daughters, Bonnie I. Graf, Fort Wayne, IN and Janet L. Shirk, Richfield;
two sisters, Bernice
Sechrist and Helen Holtzapple, both of Lewisburg; four grandchildren; and
seven
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Ray Garman and
two sisters, Annie
Diffenderfer and Ruth Shirk. The funeral service was conducted Friday,

11:57 a.m. Sunday, September 3, 1995, at Hershey
Medical Center. Born September 27, 1934, in Burnham, he was a son of the
late Walter S. and
Esther [Kearns] Glace. Surviving are: a brother, Walter D. Glace, Burnham.
He was employed as
an illustrator at AMP Inc., Harrisburg, with 37 years of service. He was
a member of St.
Paul's Lutheran Church, Burnham. He was a graduate of Williamsport Technical
Institute.
Services were held Wednesday, September 6 at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral
Home, with Rev.
Clyde B. Singh officiating. Interment was in St. Mark's Episcopal Cemetery,

GRAYBILL, LENORE M. --- Lenore M. Graybill, 78, of McAlisterville RR1
died June 27, 1995, at 9:10 a.m. at her home.
She was born April 16, 1917, the daughter of the late Dolph B. and Mary
Ann [Lauver] Roush.
In 1934, she graduated from Fayette High School, McAlisterville. She married
George E.
Graybill December 24, 1938. She was employed as a telephone operator in
McAlisterville,
during the mid-1930s, but was a homemaker for most of her life. She was
a member of the
Richfield Mennonite Church. For most of her life, she had been a member
of the Trinity
Lutheran Church, McAlisterville, where she taught children's Sunday school
classes for 40
years and was a member of the church choir and pianist. She was also active
in Women's
Missionary Society. Her hobbies were reading and sewing. In addition to
her husband, she is
survived by: a son, G. Richard Graybill, Santa Cruz, CA; a daughter, Mary
Lou Meiser,
Richfield; a brother, Jack D. Roush, Selinsgrove, five grandchildren and
one greatgrandchild.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 1 at Richfield Mennonite
Church, with Rev.
J.R. O'Connell officiating. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

GRAYBILL, NAOMI IRENE - Mrs. Naomi Irene Graybill, 68, of Richfield,
died at 3:03 a.m., Monday, August 7, 1995 at
Sunbury Community Hospital. She had been stricken at her home prior to
being transported to
the hospital. Born November 22, 1926 at West Perry Township, Snyder County,
she was the
daughter of the late Cloyd and Stella Derr Apple. She was married for nearly
50 years to Earl
V. Graybill. They were to celebrate their 50th anniversary August 25. Mrs.
Graybill attended
Slants School at West Perry Township and graduated at the age of 16 from
the former Freeburg
High School in 1942. She was employed as a dietary supervisor for over
26 years at The Zendt
Home, Richfield. She also was a homemaker and mother. Her memberships included
Richfield
Mennonite Church, where she was a member of the Sewing Circle, and she
was actively involved
with the annual Richfield Dutch Days heading the Food Service Committee
for many years. In
addition to her husband, she is survived by: two daughters, Janet D. Strohecker,
Sunbury RR2,
and Ruth Ann Varner, Stevens; one son, David E. Graybill, Florida; three
brothers, Elmer and
Albert Apple, both of HC 67, Richfield, and Herbert Apple, Mt. Pleasant
Mills RR2; six
sisters, Mary Hoffman and Helen Hoffman, both of Richfield, Olive Hibbs,
Mt. Pleasant Mills,
Glendora Lauver, Mifflintown, Norma Sheaffer, Richfield and Janet Apple,
Port Royal; nine
grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. She
was preceded in
death by one brother, Reno Apple, and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Kerstetter.
The funeral
service was conducted Thursday from Richfield Mennonite Church, with Rev.
Jerry O'Connell
officiating. Burial followed in the Richfield Union Cemetery. Memorial

Church, Levittown, where he served many years as deacon and property chairman.
He was also
active in the adult Bible study class of the church. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran of World War

she was the daughter of
the late David W. and Annie Birchfield Benner. She was preceded in death
by her husband,
Banks L. Hoffman, in 1943. Mrs. Hoffman attended the Crossroads Grammar
School at Richfield.
She was employed for over 27 years for the former L. Shellenberger &
Son Shirt Factory,
Richfield, as a seamstress. She was a lifetime member of Richfield Mennonite
Church and
Richfield Ambulance League. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter
and enjoyed
gardening. Mrs. Hoffman also spent quite a bit of time in the visitation
of the sick in her
community. She is survived by two children, Nevin L. Hoffman, Richfield
RR1 and Irene E.
Sheaffer, HC 63, Richfield; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and
ten great-great-
grandchildren. Mrs. Hoffman was preceded in death by two sons, Merrill
Hoffman, in January
1989, and Earl Hoffman, in December 1988; one brother, Penrose Benner,
three stepbrothers,
David, John and Clayton Kauffman; and two stepsisters, Lizzie Snyder and
Mary [last name

step-paternal
grandparents Walter and Evelyn Riggin of McAlisterville. He was preceded
in death by his
maternal grandparents, John and Edna Dressler of McAlisterville. He had
attended Central
Manor Elementary School, where he finished fifth grade. He was a member
of Millersville
Brethren in Christ Church. He was involved with the church quiz team and
a member of the
local Cub Scout pack. His hobbies were fishing, baseball, soccer and cooking.

be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 9 at Millersville Brethren in
Christ Church, with
Pastor M. Eugene Heidler officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove

RR4 [Dogtown], died at 3:15 a.m., Friday, August 11, 1995 at Locust Grove
Village. Born
August 23, 1905 in Spruce Hill, Juniata County, he was the son of the late
Stewart W. and Sue
B. [McNeal] Kendrick. His wife, Tressie M. [Bardell] Kendrick, Port Royal
RR1, survives. He
is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by a sister, Ann Lou
Beale. He was a construction worker with various firms in Juniata County.
His last employment
was with John E. Groninger, from which he retired. He was a member of Ebenezer
United
Methodist Church, Port Royal RR1. Services were held at the convenience
of the family with
Jack Taylor officiating. Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port
Royal RR. Guss

City, PA, she
was the daughter of the late John Albert Plank and Mary Elda Wax Plank.
She was a member of
New Bloomfield United Methodist Church, the Ladies' Auxiliary of the New
Bloomfield Fire Co.
and the New Bloomfield Senior Citizens. She was the widow of the late Dallas
J. Kirk.
Surviving are five sons, Charles of Dillsburg, Walter and James of Shermans
Dale, Karl of New
Bloomfield and John of Whitehaven; two daughters, Grace Simonton of Carlisle
and Ruth Smiley
of Shermans Dale; a sister, Erma Hockenberry of Port Royal; 15 grandchildren;
and 21 great-
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Willard. Funeral services
were held Friday
at the Boyer Funeral Home, New Bloomfield. Her pastor, Rev. Clair Troutman,
officiated.
Interment was in Snyder's Church Cemetery, Wheatfield Township. Memorial

1995 at her residence. She was born August 11, 1915 in Port Royal, Juniata
County, to the
late S. Wayne and Clara [Muldoon] Taylor. Her husband, Harold F. Koons,
preceded her in death
in 1983. She is survived by two sons, Charles W. Koons, Conyers, GA, and
George A. Koons,
Mifflintown RR1; one brother, Charles E. Taylor, Baltimore, MD; ten grandchildren;
and six
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Stanley L.
Taylor and Harold B.
Koons; one brother, William Taylor, and two sisters, Hazel Landis and Margaret
Helwig. In
earlier life she was employed by the former Milliken's Restaurant, Mifflintown,
the Chicken
Pen Restaurant and Ed's Drive-In, before retiring in 1980 as a cook from
Brookline Manor
Convalescent Home, Mifflintown RR1. Upon retirement she volunteered her
time to many area
senior citizens as a caregiver. She was a member of Arch Rock United Methodist
Church,
Mifflintown RR1. Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Brown Funeral
Home, Mifflintown
with Rev. Jonathan C. Terry III officiating. Burial was in the New Church
Hill Cemetery, Port

12, 1995, at Lewistown Hospital. He was born April 22, 1921 in Walker Township
to the late
William H.H. and Bertha E. [Smith] Kreider. His wife Flora M. [Kirk] Kreider,
whom he married
August 31, 1956, survives. Also surviving are: three sons, Anthony J. Kreider,

brothers and three sisters. He retired as a salesman from Davis Produce,
Thompsontown. He was
a World War II United States Army veteran. Full military burial honors
were conducted by the
Juniata County Veterans Council Friday, September 15 at Lost Creek Mennonite
Cemetery,
Oakland Mills. The memorial service was private. Arrangements were by Brown

the Harrisburg State Hospital. He was a World War Il veteran, having served

Larkspur Drive, Augusta, GA, died June 24, 1995
at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Born January 7, 1923,
he was the son
of Margaret [Wolfgang] McMullen, Augusta, GA and the late Vincent R. McMullen
Sr. His
wife, Martha Jane McMullen, Augusta, whom he married in June 1945, survives.
Jack, a
native of McAlisterville, left the area after high school to serve in the
Army Air Corps
in World War II. He was retired as a kiln operator, was a member of the
Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and belonged to the Baptist Church in Augusta. Also surviving
are a son,
Kenneth Robert McMullen, Norristown, PA; two daughters, Lee Ann Cianciulli,
Norristown,
and Jane Ellen Omar Augusta; two sisters, Hope Aichelman, Austin, TX; and
Linda McCoy,
North Fort Myers, FL; and three grandchildren.

MESSIMER, IDA M. ------ Mrs. Ida M. Messimer, 88, of Millerstown RR2,
died at 3:30 a.m., Thursday, August 10, 1995 at
her home. Born June 24, 1907 in Susquehanna Township, Juniata County, she
was the daughter of
the late Henry and Linnie Kell Boyer. She was married to Edward George
Messimer, who preceded
her in death June 26, 1966. Mrs. Messimer attended the Oriental schools
in Juniata County.
She was a homemaker and mother. She was Protestant by faith. She was also
a member of
Richfield Ambulance League and hobbies included crocheting and floral gardening.
She was an
accomplished baker and loved to cook. She is survived by five children,
George H. Messimer,
Richfield RR1, James A. Messimer, Charles B. Messimer and David W. Messimer,
all of
Millerstown RR2, and Helen L. Frantz, Apopka, FL; one sister, Anna Michaels,
Selinsgrove; 17
grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Mrs.
Messimer was
preceded in death by one son, Park B. Messimer, in 1987, and one great-great-grandson,
in
infancy. The funeral service was conducted Monday from the George P. Garman

a brother. He was a
mining engineer, having worked for International Refractories, Johnstown.
He was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Pleasant Hills Church of
the Brethren, the
American Legion and VFW, all of Johnstown. Services were held Friday, September

services were held at New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal, with Rev. Gerald

1920, the son of the late Fleming and Ruth [Kramer] Miller of Oakland Mills.
He married
Elizabeth E. "Betty" Shelley November 8, 1950 in Havre de Grace, MD. He
attended Richfield
Grammar School. He was employed by Hawstone Refractories in the 1940s and
1950s. He reTired
in 1982 from the maintenance department of the State Farm Show after 26
years of service. He
enjoyed reading and gardening. He was a member of McAlisterville United
Methodist Church,
where he was a past member of the Board of Trustees. In addition to his
wife, he is Survived
by a daughter, Deborah M. Davidson, Millerstown RR2; a sister, Beatrice
Wilson, Port Royal;
one granddaughter; and two nephews. The funeral service was held Wednesday,
September 6 at
McAlisterville United Methodist Church, with Rev. James R. Sunderland Jr.
and Rev. Robert
Wittlinger officiating. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

MINIUM, RICHARD JUNIOR - Richard J. Minium, 57, of Sunbury, died at
2:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 1995 at Sunbury
Community Hospital, where he was admitted ten days earlier. He had been
in failing health
for many years. Born in Greenwood Township December 9, 1937, he was the
son of the late
Charles Henry and Emma E. Spade Minium. He attended Crossroads Schoolhouse
and was employed
for 20 years for the former McKinley Lumber Yards, McAlisterville, retiring
in 1983 due to
ill health. He was a laborer for the company. He was Protestant by faith.
His memberships
include Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 5640, Middleburg, and Reliance
Hose Company,
Middleburg. Survivors include three sons, Robert E. Minium and Eugene Minium,
both of Camp
Hill, and Richard Junior Minium III, Richfield RR1; two daughters, Betty
Ann Minium,
Richfield RR1 and Betty Alice Minium, Dallas, PA; two brothers, Donald
P. Minium,
Harrisburg, and George R. Minium, Cocolamus; three sisters, Carolyn J.
Dick, Harrisburg,

three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Henry Minium Jr. in 1984.

MOORE SR., JAMES R. --- James R. Moore Sr., 73, of Mifflintown RR2,
died at 10:36 p.m. July 8, 1995 at Lewistown
Hospital. He was born in Port Royal April 27, 1922, the son of the late
Obed R. and Charlotte
E. [Blystone] Moore. He married Alverta S. Lehman, who died June 12, 1987.
He served in the
Army from February 1943 until November 1945, with overseas tours in Normandy
and Northern
France. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory
Medal and the
European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. He
was employed by the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by:
five sons, Nevin Lehman of Carlisle, James R. Moore Jr. of Mifflintown
RR2, David E. Moore of
McClure, Donald Moore of Mifflintown RR2 and John A. Moore of Richfield;
two daughters,

He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Esther McCreary. Services

McAlisterville. Interment will follow in the Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery,
where full

PANDEL JR., OTIS JACOBS - Otis J. Pandel Jr., 66, of Lewistown, died
at 11:30 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 1995 at
Lewistown Hospital, where he was transported from his residence following
his becoming ill.
He had been in failing health since February 1993. Born June 24, 1929 at
Burnham, he was
the son of the late Otis J. and Edna Shingler Pandel Sr. July 25, 1954
he was married to
the former Mildred Ernest, who survives. Mr. Pandel graduated in 1949 from
Lewistown High
School, and then attended Harrisburg Business School for two years. At
the time of his
death he was the second generation with The Pandel Insurance Agency, Burnham.
He was a
member of Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown. Additional memberships
include: The
Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 1229, Middleburg and Fame Ambulance
League, Lewistown.
He was a former member of Burnham Fire Company. His leisure activities
included a fondness
for western movies and traveling. In addition to his Wife, he is survived
by a son, Brent
Ernest Pandel, Felton, DE; a brother, J. Louis Pandel, Lewistown; and three
grandsons. The
funeral service was conducted Tuesday, August 22, at 11:00 a.m. from the
George P. Garman
Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. George C. Moore officiating.

Glendale Cemetery, Middleburg.

Her hobbies
were gardening, flowers and crocheting afghans. The funeral service was

Anchor Glass Container, Cliffwood, NJ for 29 years, with her last job being
an inspector. She

automobile accident along Route 80 in Carbon County. Born April 9, 1973,
in Lewisburg, he
was a son of Clarence and Diana [Beachel] Sheaffer Sr. of Millerstown RR2.

was the beloved husband Jane A. [Cain] Sheaffer

Economy Boro, Karen L. Crow and her husband Larry of Bentleyville, and
Dale R. Sheaffer and
his wife Christy of Conway; plus Holly, John, Meghan and Amy Maier and

retired from
Greyhound Bus Lines after driving for 37 years. He had served as an MP

SHELLEY, HAROLD E. ---- Harold E. Shelley, 80, of 41 Ashlea Village,
New Holland, died at home Friday morning, July
14 after a brief illness. He was under a doctor's care. He was the husband
of Elsie Eshleman
Shelley. They were married for 55 years in May. Born in Mifflintown, he
was the son of the
late Erasmus P. and Mary E. Wert Shelley. He moved to Lancaster County
in 1935 to work with
his sister and brother-in-law in the White Horse Store. He was a member
of Hershey Mennonite
Church in Kinzers, where, he taught Bible and Sunday school classes for
many years.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Theodore E. of Montoursville.
Three daughters,
Janice K, wife of Bruce Grace, of Lancaster, Joyce S., wife of H. Louis
Chance, of West
Grove, and Edith M., wife of Tony Folker, of New Holland; a sister, Mary
E., wife of Leory
Hershey, of Cochranville; and ten grandchildren. Services were held Monday,
July 17 at
Hershey Mennonite Church. Interment was in Hershey Mennonite Cemetery.

Township to the late Banks L. and Sadie [Palm] Wise. Her husband Harold
E. "Smitty" Smith
preceded her in death November 13, 1953. She is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. James E.
[Dorothy J.] Beaston Sr., Mifflintown RR5; five grandchildren; and ten
great-grandchildren.
She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death
by two brothers,
James Wise and Cecil Wise; and seven sisters, Blanche Potter, Ada Vanalman,
Alva Potter,
Mabel Hutchinson, Bessie Wise, Mary Wise and Effie Wise; and a great-grandson
Corey Beaston.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin. She was a
beautician for 31
years and owned and operated for 27 years the former Smitty's Restaurant,

SMITH, LAWRENCE MOYER - Lawrence Moyer Smith, 72, of Freeburg, died
Monday evening, August 21, 1995, at Sunbury
Community Hospital, after suffering a fatal heart attack at his residence.
Born at Mt.
Pleasant Mills [Fremont] April 13, 1923, he was the son of the late William
R. and Esther L.
Moyer Smith. June 22, 1951, he married the former Ruth Ulrich, who survives.
Mr. Smith was a
1941 graduate of Burnham High School. He then enrolled at Susquehanna
University,
Selinsgrove and graduated in 1950 with a degree in accounting. He
enlisted in the United
States Army and served as a private first class in the infantry, stationed
in Italy, France,
Okinawa and Japan during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart
in 1944 for being
wounded in action in Italy. A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Freeburg,
he had served
as a Sunday school teacher for the adult men's class and as Sunday school
superintendent.
Additionally, he was Secretary of Freeburg borough, a post he held for
35 years. He also
served as a member of the Selinsgrove Area School Board and the Selinsgrove
Area Industrial
Development Authority. Mr. Smith was a certified public accountant and
had the Lawrence M.
Smith firm at Pine Saw, Selinsgrove. He was a life member of Freeburg Fire
Company and was a
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 5640, Middleburg RR4.
Additionally, he
enjoyed antiques and was an avid local history collector. He was a member
of the Pennsylvania
German Society and the Snyder County Historical Society. In addition to
his wife, he is
survived by two sons, Lawrence U. Smith of State College; a daughter, Cynthia
E. Hetrick of
Beavertown RR1; two sisters, Rose M. Miller and Joann R. Gingrich, both
of Freeburg; and five
grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted Friday, August 25 from
The George P. Garman
Funeral Horne, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. David K. Louder officiating
and Rev. Dr. Edgar

Mifflintown; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers,
Homer Smith,

farmer and had also been employed as a construction worker for Hemp Brothers

Enterprise. He was also a custodian at Juniata High School and was a former
employee of
Hilltop Oil Co. He was a 1941 graduate of Juniata Joint High School and
was a veteran of the
United States Navy. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown,
where he was a
member of the Lloyd Showers Sunday School Class and Men of Messiah and
had been a Church
Council member. he was also a member of the Mifflintown Lions Club, Juniata
Gun Club and
Juniata County Retired School Employees Association. He was a former Juniata
County School
Board director, having served for 13 years. The funeral service was held
Wednesday from
Messiah Lutheran Church, with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment
was in the

served on the Cemetery Association Board, benevolence chairman and previously
on the church
council. He was a member of Thompsontown Lions Club, and in 1990 was named
Outstanding
Citizen of Thompsontown by the Lions Club. He was a life member of the
J.E. Bowen AmVets Post
No. 122, Thompsontown. He had previously served on Thompsontown Borough
Council and with
Thompsontown Fire and Ambulance Company. Funeral services were held Saturday,

of Blough

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution-Dauphin County Chapter,
the National
Society Daughters of the American Colonists-Cymry Chapter, Friends of Perry

home. She was born September 6, 1933 in Middleburg, a daughter of Kathryn
[Snyder] Benner of
Middleburg and the late Winfred Benner. She was a 1951 graduate of Middleburg
High School and
a 1995 graduate of Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove. Mrs. Stuck taught
at East Juniata
High School for 23 years, and, prior to that, taught for five years in
Greenwood School
District. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Middleburg.
She was also a
member of the Pennsylvania State Education and the National Education associations.
In
addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Lori S. Herndon
of Brigantine, NJ
and Ellen K. Shirk of Paxtonville; two sons, Kevin A. of Harrisburg and
Keith A. of New Port
Ritchie, FL; a sister, Phyllis B. McCloud of Middleburg; and five grandsons.

Hospital. She was born in McAlisterville January 6, 1911, the daughter

and Mary A. [Leister] Coldren. January 24, 1932, she married Earl H. Swartz.
A homemaker all
of her life, she also helped to farm their land until her husband's death
in 1982. She also
enjoyed cooking, crocheting and making clothes for her family. She was
a member of Cedar
Grove Brethren in Christ, Mifflintown. She is survived by three sons, Earl
H. Swartz Jr. of
Harrisburg, Paul H. Swartz of Middletown and Donald E. Swartz of Lewistown;
two daughters,
Anna Mae Crumb of Mechanicsburg and Selvia Jean Booher of McAlisterville;
a brother, John B.
Coldren of Roan Mountain, IN; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Mae Hicks,
who died in 1981.

Lewistown Hospital. Born July 10, 1923, in Lewistown, he was a son of the
late Hurley R. and
Maude [Kempher] Thomas. His wife, Norine [Gingrich] Thomas, whom he married
July 9, 1947,

He was

as a first
lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot from 1942-1945. In 1960,
he was employed as
a new car salesman for Leister motors, McAlisterville, a position he continued
to hold with
Mertz Ford. until his retirement in 1988. He was a mernber of the Lost
Creek Presbyterian
Church, a charter member and founder of the Lost Creek Golf Club, Oakland
Mills, was a member
of the Tennis Lodge No. 371 F&AM, Thompsontown, Tall Cedars of Lebanon,
Juniata Valley Forest
No. 88, Fayette Lions Club, McAlisterville, Lost Creek Hunting Camp, Seven
Mountains and
AMVETS Post 122, Thompsontown. He was also a past member of the Juniata
County veterans
Council and VFW Post 5863, Mifflintown. He was an avid Penn State football
fan, hunter and
fisherman. Services were held Tuesday at Lost Creek Presbyterian Church,
with Rev. Elaine
Fogarty officiating. Interment was in Lost Creek Presbyterian cemetery,
with full military
honors conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Association. The Ronald

home. She had been in ill. health since November 1984. Born June 23, 1943

the daughter of Mrs. Beaulah E. Phillips Wendt of Mt. Pleasant Mills and
the late Winebert W.
Wendt. March 26, 1966 she married John S. Troutman, who survives. Mrs.
Troutman graduated
from Middleburg, Joint High School in 1961. She was employed from July
1963 to June 1991 as a
caseworker for the Snyder County Board of Assistance Selinsgrove. She enjoyed
craftwork;
especially counted crossstitching and sewing. She was a member of Emmanuel
United Methodist
Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills, where she was a former Sunday school teacher.

[Seifert] Varner of McAlisterville. He married Mildred Pauline Willoughby.
He served in Japan
during World War II. He was employed by Hempt Brothers Construction as
a Cement finisher
until his retirement in 1988 after 25 years. He also worked in his father's
sawmill. He was a
member of the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah's Witnesses of Beavertown. In addition
to his wife, he
is Survived by: four daughters, Judy Conrad of Middleburg, Deb Swope of
Beaver Springs, Cindy
McCarrick of Middleburg and Nancy Wolfley, of McClure RR2; a son, Ricky

Army for 17 years, from 1943 until 1960. He was employed by Norwalk Trucking
and later
retired from Daubert's Trucking, Yeagertown. After he retired he returned
to work as a
security guard for Empire Kosher, Mifflintown. He was a member of the National
graphic
Society, Pennsylvania Geographic Sheriffs' Association, VFW Post No. 148,
Lower Paxton
Memorial Post, the National Rifle Association, the American Association
of Retired Persons
and the American Federation of Police. In addition to his wife, he is survived
by a daughter,
Marcia Wortman, Thompsontown RR1; a brother, Oscar Wagner, Brookville;

8, 1913 in Milford Township, Juniata County, to the Late William A. and
Blanche M. [Saylor]
Leiter. Her husband, William M. Whistler, preceded her in death August
6, 1978. She is
survived by one son, Donald M. Whistler, York; one daughter, Mrs. Norman
E. [Joyce A.],
Bargo, Port Royal; one brother, Wayne Leiter, Thompsontown; one sister,
Dorothy Minick,
Mifflintown RR4; and one grandson. In earlier life she was employed as
an agent by Prudential
Life Insurance Company. Following WWII, she did landscape designs and sold
shrubbery. In the
mid 1950s she and her husband bought a fruit market, which became Don's
Fruit Market,
Mifflintown RR1, which they owned and operated for approximately 20 years
before retiring in
1970. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church Mifflintown,
where she had
served as the church treasurer and on the Board of Trustees, was treasurer
of the Fidelity
Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of American
Legion Post 298,
Mifflintown. Funeral services were held Friday from the Brown Funeral Home

Turbett. During her husband's terms as Sheriff of Juniata County she served
as his chief
deputy, the female probation officer, the parole officer, the domestic
relations officer and
the cook for the Juniata County Jail. She retired in 1971 as a seamstress
from Juniata
Garment Co., Mifflin, and she had previously worked at other sewing factories
in Juniata
County. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 22, from Brown Funeral
Home, Mifflintown,
with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Burial was in Westminster Presbyterian
Cemetery,
Mifflintown.

two brothers, Earl Britcher and Clark Britcher. In her early life, she
had worked at the
former Harling's Rug Mill, before becoming a licensed practical nurse and
working on private
duty in the Mifflintown area. She was a member of Arch Rock United Methodist
Church,
Mifflintown RR1, where she had taught Sunday school for over 50 years.
She was also involved
with the Bible school and the youth group programs of the church. Services
were held Tuesday
at Arch Rock United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jonathan C. Terry III officiating.
Interment
was in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Brown Funeral Home,
Mifflintown, was

YODER, CARL Y. -------- Carl Y. Yoder, 89, of Millerstown RR1 died Friday,
July 22, 1995 in Perry Village Nursing
Home, New Bloomfield. He was born October 14, 1905 in Port Royal to the
late John and
Charlotte Weimer Yoder. He was a retired houseparent at the Loysville Youth
Development
Center and was a former poultry dealer. He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a member
of Donnally Mills United Methodist Church, Millerstown RR1, Millerstown
VFW Post No. 5049 and
Tuscarora Grange in Donnally Mills. He was the widower of Margaretta
R. Allen Yoder who died
July 20, 1975. Surviving are two sons, Carl E. Yoder of Gainesville, GA,
and Larry R. Yoder
of Millerstown RR1; two brothers, Lester Yoder and Leroy Yoder, both of
Port Royal; two
sisters, Vivian Harper of Largo, FL and Lena Houser of Oklahoma City, OK;
and three
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Graydon
and Lloyd Yoder.
Services were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Nickel Funeral Home, Millerstown,
with Rev. Arthur
L. Montgomery officiating. Burial was in Millerstown Riverview Cemetery.

ZOOK, DEBRA A. -------- Debra A. Hocking Zook, 41, of Mifflintown and
formerly of Centre Hall, died Thursday, August
31, 1995, at Lewistown Hospital. Born March 10, 1954, in Bellefonte, she
was the daughter of
Richard G. Hocking of Centre Hall and the late Bella M. Johnson Hocking.
Her ex-husband,
Robert A. Zook Sr. of Belleville, and a companion with whom she resided
Frank F. Fike,
survive. Also surviving are: children, Crystal D. Zook of Honey Grove,
Robert A. Zook Jr.
and Brian S. Zook of Centre Hall; maternal grandmother, Fietta Shaffer
Johnson of Rural
Howard; a brother, Jonathan R. Hocking of Centre Hall; and a sister, Dianne
L. Hocking of
Rural Howard. She was a homemaker and worked as a flag person for Fulkroad
Construction in
McAlisterville. Services will be held at 10:00 am. Wednesday at the Mark
D. Heintzelman
Funeral Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall, with Rev. David
A. Annan
officiating. Interment will be in the Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery, Centre
Hall. Memorial

Highland Avenue,
Lewistown, PA 17044.
