Memorial Hospital, Salem, NJ. She was born January 24, 1930, in McAlisterville,
the daughter
of the late Peter Clinton and Laura (Jones] Varner. She attended
Fayette Elementary School,
McAlisterville, and Evendale Grammar School, Evendale. She and her family
moved to New Jersey
when she was 17 years old. She is survived by her husband of 35 years,
Charles H. Applegit;
two sons, Norman Ladlee, Livingston, TX, and Jack Ladlee, Carney's Point;
a daughter, Sheila
Bollinger, Pennsville, NJ; a brother, William Varner, McAlisterville; a
sister, Myrtle
Gearhart, Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown; four grandchildren; and
four great-
grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Foster Varner, four
sisters, Grace
Prettyman, Mable DeLancy, Irene Jones and Pearl Schmidt; and one granddaughter.
The funeral
service was held Wednesday, January 3, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral
Home,
McAlisterville, with Rev. Walter Williams officiating. Interment followed
in Hillside
Cemetery, McAlisterville.

died at 3:22 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 1996, at
Lewistown Hospital. Born June 4, 1925, in Cocolamus, he was a son of the
late Paul and Effie
[Kauffman] Auker. Surviving are: children, Patricia L. Arbogast and Debra

grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilmer Auker, and
a sister, Evelyn
Auker. He was a self-employed poultry farmer in Evendale from 1948-1963.
He was later
employed by Shaffer Trucking Co., New Kingston, as a truck driver from
1963-1973. His last
employment was at Selinsgrove Center State School, retiring in 1985. He
was a member of
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville, Lost Creek Golf Club,
Oakland Mills,
Lost Creek Rod and Gun Club, McAlisterville, VFW Post No. 5863, Mifflintown,
American Legion
Post No. 298, Mifflintown and had been a charter member of the Richfield
Lions Club. He was
an avid golfer, traveling to many courses since his retirement. He attended
Red Bank
Elementary School and Fayette High School, McAlisterville. He served in
the U.S. Army during
World War II from 1943-1946 with Co. L, 406th Infantry Reg., 102 Division
and received a
Purple Heart for being wounded inaction in Germany in 1945. Services will
be held at 10:30
a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville,
with Rev.
James Park Bricker officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery,
McAlisterville, where
full military honors will be conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Association.

Dauphin County, died Thursday, March 7, 1996
at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. He was president of Brenner
Motors and its
subsidiaries; a member of Beth El Temple and Capital Region Chamber of
Commerce; president of
Harrisburg Automotive Trade Association; a board member of Pennsylvania
Automotive
Association; and chairman of the Pennsylvania Auto Show. Mr. Brenner and
his brother, Michael
A. Brenner, had expanded the family car dealership from the single Dodge
operation in
Harrisburg to four businesses today. The Brenners bought Titus Cadillac-Oldsmobile
Inc. along
Paxton Street, Harrisburg, in 1988, and in 1994 they branched north with
purchases of the
Leidy Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Geo dealership in Mifflintown and the Mertz
Ford dealership in
McAlisterville. Brenner's grandfather, Ephraim, started the car business
in 1921, when he
began an operation that was the forerunner of today's Dodge dealership
Paxton Street.
Surviving are his wife, Sheryl Wolfe Brenner; a son, Jason, and a daughter,
Jill, both at
home; his brother, Michael, of Harrisburg; and a sister, Barbara Brenner
of Ithaca, NY.

Thompsontown, died at 8:23 p.m. Friday, March
15, 1996, at his home. Born January 18, 1918, in Thompsontown, he was a
son of the late James
R. and Margaret [Sieber] Cameron. His wife, Anna Jean [Kinzer] Cameron,
whom he married
January 25, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: children, James S. Cameron,
Port Royal RR2,
Brenda J. Guss, Laurel, MD, Mrs. Michael [Bethann] Stoner, Mifflintown
RR4; brother and
sisters, Robert Cameron, Lewistown, Mary Pinko, Mechanicsburg, Audrey Guyer,
Thompsontown;
five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin
Cameron. He was a 1936
graduate of Thompsontown High School and took many years of continuing
education at
Pennsylvania State University in the accounting field. He was a self-employed
accountant,
having worked for many businesses including Belleville Livestock Market
for 28 years and E.
C. Cleck & Son, Mifflintown RR1, for 20 years. He was a member
of Emmanuel Lutheran Church,
Thompsontown,, The Nittany Lion Club, American Legion Post No. 298, Mifflintown,
and the
Juniata Trout Club. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in
the U.S. Air Force.
Services were held Tuesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown, with
Rev. Kerry Aucker
officiating. Interment was in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Thompsontown.

at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 1996 at
Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin. She was born October 10,
1913 in Beale
Township, a daughter of the late Russel W. and Mary [Hopple] Whitesel.
Her husband, Maurice
M. Campbell, died January 31, 1988. Surviving are three daughters,
Gladys L. Harlan and
Maxine E. Lawson, both of Honey Grove RR1, and Leota C. Briggs, Little
River, SC; two
brothers, Paul and Blair Whitesel, HC 67, Mifflin; two sisters, Anna Copenhaver,
Avis, PA,
and Pearl Smith, Port Royal RR2; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by a brother and four sisters. She was a member
of St. Paul's Lutheran
Church, Nook, attended Reeds Gap United Methodist Church, and was a member
of the Willing
Workers Sunday School Class and the East Waterford Senior Citizens Center.
Funeral services
were held Friday from the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with Rev. Sharon
Landis

Mexico, died at 3:20 a.m. Sunday, January 28,
1996, at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown. Born May 19, 1904 in Turbett
Township, he was
a son of the late John H. and Alice J. [Bender] Cassett. He is survived
by two cousins. He
was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by
a sister, Anna M.
Cassett, July 17, 1994. He was a retired plumber, having worked for the
late Park Haubert,
Mexico. He was a member of Port Royal Lutheran Church. Services
will be held at 11:00 a.m.
Wednesday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Rev. Claude Baublitz officiating.
Interment

residence. He was born October 6, 1900 in Burnham, Mifflin County,

and Margaret [Brent] Cleck. His wife Minnie M. [Clark] Cleck preceded
him in death, March
11, 1981. He is survived by three sons, Charles E. Cleck and Wade
H. Cleck, both of
Mifflintown RR1 and Warren J. Cleck, Mifflintown; four daughters, Mrs.
John (Dorothy] Regan,
Lancaster, Mrs. Ray (Jean] Miller and Mrs. James (Rhoda] Allison, both
of Mifflintown RR1 and
Bonnie Kepner of Yeagertown; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded
in death by a son, Ronald Cleck and a daughter, Letitia E. "Tish" Geedey,
August 29, 1995.
He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death
by two brothers, Harry
Cleck and Cleon Cleck and two sisters, Lois Castle and Kathryn McCardle.
He was a member of
Westminster United Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown. He founded in
1934 the former E.C.
Cleck and Sons, Inc., Mifflintown RR1 and also Ol 'Ed's Dog Food Company,
Mifflintown RR1 and
ran the businesses until his retirement in 1970. Funeral services
will be held at 10:00 a.m.
Thursday, March 7 from Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge Street, Mifflintown,
with Rev. James R.
Sunderland Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Presbyterian
Cemetery, Mifflintown.

12:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 1996, at Hershey
Medical Center. Born October 29,1919, in Lewistown, he was a son
of the late Frank A. and
Gertrude [Bailor] Clinger. His wife, Pauline [Fultz] Clinger, whom he married
in 1947,
survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. William [Sharon] Goshorn,
Mifflintown; a
sister, Doris Clinger, Lewistown; two grandchildren. He was employed
by Bell Telephone Co.
for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II,
having served in the U.S.
Army Military Police. He was a member of Trinity United Church of
Christ, Lewistown.

and Rhoda Ray Hendershot, and the widow of Olan W. Creek, who died in 1968.
She retired in
1991 from the Ben Franklin Store in Mifflintown as the assistant manager.
She attended
Hancock Assembly of God Church, Hancock, and was a member of AARP.
She is survived by four
daughters, Virginia Boor of Chambersburg, Clara Sigel of Warfordsburg,
PA, Rosalie Orr of
Luling, TX, and Mildred Dere of Warfordsburg; one son, Olan W. Creek Jr.
of Hancock; 19
grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by three sisters, Mary Ellen Hull, Virginia Hendershot and Clara
Smith; two
brothers, Lewis Hendershot and Elmer Hendershot; and two grandchildren.

2:15 a.m. Sunday, December 31, 1995, at
Lewistown Hospital. Born December 11, 1916 in Port Royal, she was
a daughter of the late
Irvin C. and Nannie [Naylor] Barton. Her first husband, Alvin W.
Leonard, died December 21,
1944. Her second husband, Chester C. "Wimpy" Flood, died June 24, 1989.
She is survived by a
number of nieces and nephews and was the last of her immediate family.
She was a former Port
Royal Borough secretary for a number of years and also had worked for the
former Bashore's
Greenhouse, Port Royal. She was a graduate of Port Royal High School
and was a member of
Port Royal Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of Friendship,
Fire Company, Port
Royal. Services were held Wednesday, January 3 at Rex Funeral Home,
Port Royal, with Rev.
Richard E. Wright officiating. Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery,

FRYMOYER, CECIL A. ---- Cecil Arthur Frymoyer, 66, of Millerstown RR3,
died at 4:55 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 1996 at
Harrisburg Hospital. He wag admitted to the hospital March 21. Born
at Oriental, February
25, 1930, he was the son of the late Ernest L. and Mable Naomi Zeiders
Frymoyer, September 8,
1956, he was united in marriage to the former Lois M. Roush, who survives.
Mr. Fryinoyer was
a 1948 graduate of Selinsgrove High School. He was inducted in the U.S.
Army and served his
military duties as a sergeant during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient
of the Purple
Heart. Mr. Frymoyer was employed for 30 years at Keystone Railway
Equipment Company,
Shiremanstown, where he was a welder. He retired April 28, 1995.
He was a mernber of Reward
United Methodist Church and served on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee,
and at the time
of his death was a member of the Trustees of the church. He was also
a member of Millerstown
Ambulance League and Fire Co,, the American Association of 'Retired Persons
and Teamsters
Union Local No. 776, Harrisburg. In his leisure time, Mr. Frymoyer
enjoyed "tinkering,"
fixing everything, and building remote control airplanes. He especially
loved spending time
with his seven grandchildren. In addition to his wife of nearly 40
years, he is survived by
three daughters, Teresa A. Losch, Thompsontown RR1, Lori K. Jones, Newport
RR1, and Wendy L.
Byers, Millerstown RR3; one brother, Carson Frymoyer, Liverpool RR1; and
seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Robert Frymoyer.
The funeral service
will be conducted Wednesday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Reward United Methodist
Church,
Millerstown RR3, with his pastor, Rev. Charles T. Tressler, officiating.
Interment will be
made in the adjoining church cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded
at graveside by

United States Army, serving in World War II. He was retired from

in Denholm, she was a daughter of the late Norman Blaine and Ida Viola
[Rapp] Leonard. Her
husband, Neal S. Gilson, died June 1, 1989. Surviving are: a daughter,
Margaret G. Crawford,
Mifflintown; brothers and sisters, Blaine L. Leonard, McAlisterville, Charles
A. Leonard,
Elizabethtown, Robert B. Leonard, Concord, NC, Mrs. John [Joy] Longenecker
and Mrs. Helen
Wert, both of Port Royal, Mrs. James [Minnie] Sunderland, Altoona; six
grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Neal "Stu"
Gilson Jr., three
brothers, Alvin Leonard, Samuel Leonard and Norman Leonard and five sisters,
Beulah E.
Gilliland, Ruth Partner, Blanche Powell, Gertrude Davis and V. Lucille
Long. She was a
retired seamstress, having worked for the former Rae-Sel Corp., Port Royal.
She was a member
of Port Royal United Presbyterian Church. Services were held Thursday
at Rex Funeral Home,
Port Royal, with Rev. Claude Baublitz and Rev. James R. Sunderland Jr.
officiating. Interment
will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Memorial contributions

GOODALE, GRETCHEN LEE - Gretchen Lee Goodale, 47, formerly of Wilmington,
DE, and Westtown, PA, drowned January 5,
1996 in Maui, HI. She was the daughter of the late Helen Ashcraft Goodale
and Charles F.
"Red" Goodale, formerly of Mifflintown, and the stepdaughter of Patricia
Finan Goodale of
Kennett Township, PA, and Naples, FL. She was born August 19, 1948 in Cleveland,
OH. She is
also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Lisa Goodale Brinton and
Chris Brinton, and
their daughter, Olivia Brinton, of Cochranville, PA. She was a graduate
of Tower Hill School,
Wilmington, DE, and Mt. Holyoke College. She also completed studies for
her doctorate in
anthropology at Columbia University, New York City. In her teens
she was an excellent
horsewoman and avid fox hunter. She also played on the varsity of Tower
Hill hockey and
lacrosse teams. At Holyoke she played lacrosse and was chosen to play on
an all-star team
against Great Britain all-stars. Gretchen and her former husband,
Henry Homeyer, taught
school in Cornish Flat, NH, for two years before enlisting as volunteers
with the U.S. Peace
Corps and spending four years developing a worldwide native craft business
for various tribal
communities. After completing her studies at Columbia University
in 1980, Gretchen accepted
a position with the ILO Division of the United Nations and a station in
Burundi, Central
Africa. After two years in Burundi she was transferred to United
Nations, Geneva,
Switzerland, ILO field headquarters. Her work in Geneva was worldwide and
her duties took her
to many countries throughout Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. In
1993 she transferred to
UNICEF [World Children's Organization] of the United Nations and accepted
a position as
deputy in Bangladesh, with a station in the capital, Dhaka. Her responsibilities
were to
reverse the educational system of Bangladesh, where barely 25 percent of
citizens are
literate. She helped to introduce programs of educating children.
A memorial service will be
held by friends and classmates January 18 in the Birmingham Friends Meeting
House,
Birmingham, PA. A scholarship fund is planned to educate young, needy girls.

died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 1996 at
Ohesson Manor, Lewistown. He was born June 3, 1918 in Delaware Township,
a son of the late
Harry and Sara Smith Graybill. His wife, AnnaMary Dreese Graybill,
whom he married January
7, 1944, died July 27, 1992. Surviving are one son, Marion M. Graybill,
Thompsontown; one
daughter, Mrs. Larry [Karen G.] Stuber of Eau Claire, WI one brother, Bernal
Graybill of
Millerstown RR1; three sisters, Enna Strawser of Quarryville and Ida Homing
and Adaline
Pellman, both of Thompsontown; and six grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by five
brothers and six sisters. He was a veteran of the United States Army,
serving in World War
II. He retired as a foreman from Triangle Pacific Cabinets Corp.,
Thompsontown. He was a
member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown, United Brotherhood of
Carpenters and
Joiners Local 287, and was a life member of the National Rifle Association.
Funeral services
were scheduled at the convenience of the family, with Rev. Kerry Aucker
officiating.
Interment was in Thompsontown Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions

GRAYBILL, ROBERT HERMAN - Robert Herman [Bill] Graybill, 76, of East
Salem, died at 11:40 a.m., Monday, March 11,
1996 at Bethany Village Retirement Center, Mechanicsburg, where he had
been a resident
since January 29, 1996. He was born September 21, 1919 in Richfield , the
son of the late
David and Lizzie [Benner] Graybill. His wife, the former Thelma Jean
Arnold, whom he
married August 18, 1945, in Thompsontown, died October 1, 1995. He
is survived by a son,
Rev. Robert A. Graybill, and a daughter, Brenda K. Graybill, both of New
Cumberland; a
brother, Wayne Graybill, Richfield; two sisters, Irene Haubert and Ida
Leitzel, both of
Mount Pleasant Mills; and three granddaughters. He was predeceased
by a brother, Percy
Graybill, and two sisters, Sadie Graybill and Hazel Swartz. He attended
Richfield Grammar
School. He had been employed at the Cocolamus Feed Mill, Cocolamus,
for a number of years
and as a cabinet maker for Triangle Pacific Cabinets Corporation, Thompsontown,
where he
retired in 1983 after 26 years of service. He was a member of East
Salem United Methodist
Church, where he was very active as Sunday school teacher, lay leader and
youth group
leader. He helped establish the East Salem Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout
Troop and was Cub
Scout Master for many years. He was a charter member of the Delaware Township
Fire
Department and a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 287, Harrisburg.
The funeral service
was held Friday at East Salem United Methodist Church, with Rev. Terry
A. Sheldon
officiating. Interment followed in the East Salem Cemetery. The Ronald

GRAYBILL, THELMA L. --- Thelma L. Graybill, 92, formerly of Richfield,
died at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 1996,
at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village Nursing Center, Lewisburg. She had resided
in the nursing
center for the past 8-1/2 years. Born February 20,1903, she was a
daughter of the late Cloyd
and Ida M. [Landis] Graybill. Surviving are: two nieces; four nephews;
great-nieces; great-
nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews. She was preceded
in death by two sisters,
Marie N. Snyder and Erma B. Graybill. She attended the Richfield
local schools. She was
employed by the former L. Shellenberger & Son Shirt Factory, Richfield,
for over 45 years.
She was a member of Richfield Mennonite Church and the ladies Sunday school
class of the
church. She was also amember of the Richfield Ambulance League.
Miss Graybill enjoyed
gardening, cooking and baking; but most of all she enjoyed children.
Services were held
Tuesday at Richfield Mennonite Church, with Rev. Jerry R. O'Connell officiating.
Interment

of Thompsontown, died Saturday, February 3,
1996, at his home. He was born in Thompsontown October 2, 1913 to the late
Frank and
Elizabeth Brubaker Gross. He was retired from the Pennsylvania State Correctional
Institution
at Camp Hill, with 37 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Air-Corp
veteran of WWII. He was
a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, New Cumberland, a past worshipful
master and 50-year
member of Tennis Lodge No. 371 F&AM, Thompsontown, and a member of
Harrisburg Consistory.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah A. Young Gross; a daughter, Jane K.
Byerly, New
Cumberland; two brothers, George Gross, Thompsontown, and Merrill Gross,
Mt. Wolf; three
grandchildren; and three great-grandsons. Memorial services will
be held Monday, February 12

1996 in Beale Township, Juniata County, the result of an accidental drowning.
He was born
October 12,1957 in Lewistown, a son of Robert R. and Mary Ort Hackenberger
of Mexico, PA.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by children, Heather Hackenberger
and Billie
Hackenberger, both of Richfield RR1, and Mary Kay Hackenberger and Daniel
Hackenberger,
both of HC 67, Mifflin; two brothers, Robert R. Hackenberger Jr. of Thompsontown
RR1. and
C. Boyd Hackenberger of Mifflintown RR4; and one sister, Diane Cameron
of Port Royal RR2.
He was employed by Standard Steel, Burnham. Funeral arrangements were not
complete Monday,
although Gus Funeral Home, 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, indicated
that a funeral
was tentatively scheduled for Thursday with visitation, but no viewing
prior to the
service.

died at 7:30 a.m., Friday, February 9, 1996 of
natural causes at his residence. He was born September 15, 1949 at Lock
Haven Hospital, the
son of Martin L. and M. Elizabeth [Gledhill] Kauffman, McAlisterville RR2.
He graduated
from Bellefonte High School in 1965 and attended Penn State University.
He was employed as
a salesclerk for Keeler's Bookstore, State College, and as an operator
for the Harrisburg
Police Department. He also worked at the Juniata County Library, Mifflintown.
He was a
member of Bellefonte Presbyterian Church and Lost Creek Presbyterian Church.
In addition to
his parents, he is survived by two brothers, John H. Kauffman, Sebring,
FL, and Martin D.
Kauffman, Wilkes Barre, PA. Following cremation, the remains will
be interred at a
graveside service, which will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February

KAUFFMAN, NANCY L. ---- Nancy L. Kauffman, 45, of Harrisburg, died at
12:15 am. Saturday, January 13, 1996, at her
home due to natural causes. Born January 12, 1951 in Derry Township,
Mifflin County, she was
a daughter of B. Donald and Beulah [Crozier] Kauffman of Mifflintown RR3.
In addition to her
parents, she is survived by: a sister, Sonya Cramer, Lititz, brothers,
Randall Kauffman and
Kevin Kauffman, both of Mifflintown RR3, and Kurt Kauffman of Whitefish,
MT, four nephews,
four nieces. She was employed by the Public Utilities Commission,
State of Pennsylvania.
She was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Licking Creek Valley,
and was a volunteer
with South Central Food Bank, Harrisburg. Memorial services will
be held at 2:00 p.m.
Saturday at St. Stephen' s Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3, with Rev.
Stuart H. Lengel Jr.
officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking
Creek Valley.
There will be no viewing. Family will provide all funeral flowers.

Aged, Shirleysburg, died Saturday, February 3,
1996 at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born April 10, 1908, in Black
Log Valley, Lack
Township, he was a son of the late Charles and Katie [Smith] Kelley.
Surviving are a sister,
Ethel Kirk, East Waterford RR 1; brothers, Dervin Kelley, Mifflin, Samuel
Kelley, Port Royal
RR2 and Blair Kelley, Lewistown RR4; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death
were four brothers and a sister. He was a member of Shirleysburg
United Methodist Church and
had been employed at the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown. He had also worked
for various
farmers in Juniata County. Mr. Kelley enjoyed his daily visits to the Shirleysburg
Garage,
the outdoors and, as long as he was able, hunting. A memorial service
was held Saturday,
February 10, at the Shirley Home for the Aged, with Rev. Richard Morris
officiating,
Interment was in Upper Black Log Valley Cemetery. Funeral arrangements
were under the
direction of the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home, Millheim.

Township, she was a
daughter of the late Brady and Margaretta Belle [Zeigler] Garman. Her husband,
John A.L.
Kepner, died December 28, 1983. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Glenn

Paradise, Mrs. Richard [Bonnie] McMillen, Loysville RR2; eight grandchildren;
six
greatgrandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having
been preceded in death
by a sister, Minnie Hoffman, a brother, Carl Garman and a grandson, Richard
McMillen. She was

Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin. He was born October 12, 1914
in Walker Township,
the son of the Late Harry Hartman and Mary Elizabeth Guss Kerchner.
He is survived by his
wife, Helen Hower Kerchner, whom he married April 15, 1939. Also surviving
are one son,
Jerome E. Kerchner Jr. of Stevensville, MD; one daughter, Carol L. Nace
of Centre Hall RR2;
one sister, Sara Benfer of Harrisburg; six grandchildren; one step-grandson;
five great-
grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by one son, Karl
Hower Kerchner, three brothers, E. Guss Kerchner, John K. Kerchner and
Lloyd H. Kerchner;
and one sister, Anna Tyson. He was employed as a carpenter from 1936
to 1942 and worked at
Hawstone Brick Plant from 1942 to 1943 and for the Pennsylvania Railroad
from 1943 until he
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, Milford Grange
No. 773 and the
Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, United Transportation
Union Local 830R.
He was past president of Mifflin Borough Council and was past president
of the Juniata
County School Board. The funeral service was held Thursday at Guss

Mifflintown, with Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment was in
Westminster

KERSTETTER, HAZEL A. -- Hazel A. Kerstetter, 59, of Millerstown RR2,
Monroe Township, died at 4:49 p.m., Tuesday,
March 5, 1996 in the emergency room of Sunbury Community Hospital, following
a coronary at
her residence. Born in Susquehanna Township, Juniata County, October
14, 1936, she was the
daughter of Mrs. Sarah Kline Goodling, Liverpool RR 1, and the late Arthur
F. Goodling Sr.,
who died August 19, 1992. She was married August 16, 1952 to Glenn
E. Kerstetter, who
survives. Mrs. Kerstetter attended Laurel Grammar School in Juniata
County. She was
employed at the time of her death as auditor for Juniata County, a position
she had for five
years, and during the summer months she was employed as a kitchen preparation
person for
Droter's Anglers Marina at Kent Narrows, MD. She was United Methodist
by faith. Mrs.
Kerstetter was associated with the Democratic Women's Committee of Juniata
County. She was
director involved in establishing Shade Mountain Health Center, Mt. Pleasant
Mills. She had a
special talent for "invisible weaving" and also loved baking and cooking.
In addition to her
mother and husband of 44 years, she is survived by four sons, Gary E. and
Larry E., both of
Millerstown RR2, and Barry E. and Rodney A., both of Richfield RR 1; two
daughters, Carol A.
Kerstetter of Lititz and Debra L. Stone, Millerstown RR2; three brothers,
Elwood, Henry and
Arthur Jr. Goodling, all of Liverpool RR1; five sisters, Sadie Bitner,
Bear, DE, Helen
Shiltz, Richfield RR 1, Lottie Chubb, Hummels Wharf, and Dorothy Wimmer
and Lillian Willow,
both of Liverpool RR1; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kerstetter was
preceded in death by her father and two brothers, John and Herman Goodling.

from 1963 to 1994, after which he was employed by Lyon Fashions, McAlisterville.

Lodge 143, Lewistown; Center Region Mustang Club; and Lost Creek Presbyterian

LEMASTER, CLARENCE ROBERT - Clarence Robert "Zeke" Lemaster, 61, of
Liverpool RR1, died at 4:05 p.m., Tuesday, March
19, 1996 at Kin Kora Pythian Home, Duncannon, where he was admitted a short
time earlier
that day from Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. Mr. Lemaster had been
hospitalized
since February 22, 1996. Born in Shippensburg December 19, 1934,
he was the son of the
late Luther Samuel and Anna Mae Bigler Lemaster. August 10, 1957
he was married to the
former Shirley L. Markle, who survives. Mr. Lemaster attended the
Chambersburg Schools.
He retired in November 1978 following 15 years of employment with H.F.
Campbell & Sons
Trucking Co., Millerstown. He was a truck driver He was a member of St.
Matthew's
Evangelical Lutheran Church,, Millerstown RR1. Additional memberships included
Liverpool
Volunteer Fire Co. and Liverpool Ambulance lance League. He was a
former Cub Scout
committee member and was a former member of the Perry Valley Forest Fire
Fighters. In
addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Robert A. Lemaster,
at home, and
Nicholas E. Lemaster and Jeffrey L., both of, Liverpool; two daughters,
Pamela J. Miller,
Steelton, and Jamie I. Lemaster, at home; two brothers, Glen Lemaster Sr.
of Fayetteville
and Russell Lemaster, Gettysburg; two sisters Dorothy Mummert, Chambersburg,

Clayton E. and Gertrude [Smith] Springer. She was a graduate of Altoona
High School. She had
been employed in the business office of Bell Telephone Company, Altoona;
as secretary at Penn
Alto Hotel, Altoona; and as secretary and assistant treasurer of the J.L.
Hartman Company,
Hollidaysburg. She was then employed as a secretary for 13 years with the
Miami Beach, FL
office of The Keys Company. She had resided in Sewickley, PA; Warren,
OH; Oakland, CA; and
Salem, OR, returning to Pennsylvania after her son Roger's death.
She was also preceded in
death by a sister, Rhoda. Cremains were interred in Goodwill Cemetery,
McAlisterville RR2 at
a graveside service Thursday, February 15, with Rev. Elwood O. Johnson

Waterford Fire Co. and Ambulance Division, Tuscarora Grange No. 774, Tuscarora
Valley
Heritage Days Association, Juniata County Farm Bureau, P.O.S. of A. and
Rural Mad Carriers
Association. He was a self-employed farmer and retired mail carrier
in the East Waterford
area, with 55 years of service. He authored a book, Our Heritage' a history
of East Waterford
and the surrounding areas, as well as its sequel. Funeral services were
held Saturday at East
Waterford Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Douglas Hileman officiating. Interment
was in East

son of the late George B. and Emma L. [Mangle] Markle. June 4, 1921
, he was married to the
former Vida I. Sarver, who preceded him in death May 20, 1986. Mr.
Markle attended the
Perry County schools. He retired in 1974 from a life of fanning, painting
and carpentry
work. He enjoyed hunting and traveling. He was a member of St. Matthew's
Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Millerstown RR1, where he did carpentry and electrical
work as needed. He
was one of the founders of the Susquehanna Valley Sportsman's Club at Liverpool
and was a
charter member of the Shur-Shot Gun Club, Cross Forks, Potter County. He
was a former
director of the Greenwood School District, serving several terms, and he
was a Republican
committeeman of Greenwood Township, Perry County. Mr. Markle is survived
by two sons, David
E. Markle, Millerstown RR1, and Charles R. Markle Jr., Millerstown RR1;
one daughter, Ruth
E. Maneval, Liverpool RR1; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren;
and one brother,
Luther Markle, Dauphin. Mr. Markle was preceded in death by a daughter,

to David C.
Messimer, who preceded her in death August 13, 1983. Mrs. Messimer
attended the Snyder
County rural schools. She worked during her marriage as a domestic and
had some work in the
Liverpool and Millerstown shirt factories, but was mainly a homemaker and
mother. Mrs.
Messimer was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Millerstown RR2, and Richfield
Ambulance
League and Fire Company. She loved cooking and gardening. She is
survived by two sons, Bruce
L. Messimer, Richfield RR 1, and Leo D. Messimer, Thompsontown; seven grandchildren;

He had been in failing health for the past two years. Born at Snyder
County, July 19, 1942,
he was the son of the late Leon and Ula Sellers Moyer. June 8, 1963, he
married the former
Judy Moose, who survives. Dale graduated in 1960 from" Greenwood
Joint High School,
Millerstown. He was employed for 28 years by Conrail, Harrisburg,
as a supervisor of
operations, retiring in 1991. In 1965 he co-owned M&G Memorial
Co., Liverpool, and was
active, in the Liverpool Union Cemetery Association. He was an avid
hunter. His memberships
included Liverpool United Methodist Church, a life member of Liverpool
Fire Company and
Ambulance League, Liverpool American Legion Post No. 364, "Lowe's Coffee
Club," Liverpool,
Middleburg Lodge No. 619, F&AM, the Harrisburg Consistory, the American
Train Dispatchers
Association, Kreamer Sportsmen's Club, the National Rifle Association and
Middleburg
Recreation Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by
two daughters, Sheri L.

MOYER, GERALD FERSTER - Gerald Ferster Moyer, 71, of HC 72, Freeburg,
died at 8:25 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 1996 at
Penn Lutheran Village Nursing Center, Selinsgrove, where he was admitted
the day prior from
Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport, where he had been hospitalized
following a recent
decline of health. Born December 9, 1924 at Washington Township,
Snyder County, he was the
son of Frances Ferster Moyer, of Star Route, Freeburg, and the late Lee
Moyer. February 14,
1945, he married the former Faye Mengel, who survives. Mr. Moyer graduated
from Freeburg High
School in 1941. He was employed in Harrisburg, at an early age of 16 years,
for the
Department of Education, with IBM for one year. He also was engaged in
farming and he and his
wife owned and operated Moyer's Agway of Middleburg for 40 years. He was
a life member of St.
Peter's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, and served on St. Peter's U.C.C.
Consistory many
years and as its president. He was a Sunday school superintendent in earlier
years and later
was assistant teacher of the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Moyer served
many years on the board of
the Snyder County Extension Association and was its president for several
years. He was tax
collector for Washington Township, for 14 years. Additionally, he was a
board member and vice
president during the founding of Shade Mountain Health Center, Mt. Pleasant
Mills. He was a
poultry man and served on the former Snyder County Poultry Association
and helped to
introduce chicken barbecues to the area. He was a life member of
Freeburg Fire Co. and was a
member of, the Snyder County Historical Society, Inc., the Snyder County
Farm Bureau the AAA
Susquehanna Valley Automobile Club for 38 years, the American Association
of Retired Persons,
Reliance Hose Co. Ambulance League, Middleburg, and Medic 55 of Evangelical
Community
Hospital Lewisburg. He was also very involved with the St. Peter's Church
steeple
restoration. In addition to his mother and wife of 51 years, he is
survived by a son, Alan
E. Moyer, Strasburg; a daughter, LuAnn Hufnagle, Selinsgrove RR3; two brothers,
Raymond and
Donald Moyer, both of Beaver Springs; two sisters, Mildred Leitzel and
Gladys Moyer, both of
Star Route, Freeburg; and four grandchildren. Mr. Moyer was preceded
in death by his father

RR1, died at 1:45am., Friday, December 29, 1995
at Lewistown Hospital. He was born August 18, 1911, in Fayette Township,
the son of the late
Benjamin F. and Dora B. [Fronk] Phillips. He is survived by his wife,
the former Betty J.
Thomas, whom he married April 5, 1946. In addition, he is survived
by a son, Alton D.
Phillips, Beaver Springs; a sister, Edna Yorks, McAlisterville; two brothers,
Lester
Phillips, McAlisterville RRI, and Myron Phillips, Port Royal; and one granddaughter.
He was
predeceased by three brothers, Earl, Boyd and Clarence, and one sister,
Sylvia Benner. He
attended Fayette Elementary School, McAlisterville. He had been employed
as a machinist for
Standard Steel, Burnham, from 1936 to 1953. He was subsequently employed
by Beaver and Smith
Fruit Farm. McAlisterville, and Mattern's Hatchery, Beaver Springs,
and was a tinsmith for
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Property and Supply, from
1966 to 1980. He
also owned and operated a tinsmith business in McAlisterville. He
was a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church, mcAlisterville, and was an avid hunter. The funeral
service was held
Tuesday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with Rev.
James Park Bricker
and Stephen A. Kovac officiating. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery,
McAlisterville.

PYLE, DAVID ARTHUR ---- David A. "Dave" Pyle, 41, of Millerstown RR2,
Greenwood Township, Juniata County, was fatally
injured in a logging accident at York County, at 9:20 a.m. Monday, February
19, 1996. Born
October 19, 1954 at Chapman Township, Snyder County, he was the son of
Guy A. and Daisy
Kerstetter Pyle Sr. of Millerstown RR2. May 4, 1974 he married the former
Deborah Walter, who
Survives. He was a 1973 graduate of East Juniata High School.
Mr. Pyle was employed for the
past 15 years as a logger for the Lawrence Chubb Logging Company, Millerstown
RR2. He was a
Protestant by faith. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association
and was a member
of Millerstown Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 925. He was a great outdoorsman
and loved
hunting. In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by two
sons, Tommy L. and James
A. Pyle, both at home; two brothers, Troy E. Pyle, Millerstown RR2, and
Guy A. Pyle Jr.,
McAlisterville RR1; three sisters, Linda K. Strawser and Cindy A. Chubb,
both of Millerstown
RR2, and Annie L. Garman, Richfield RR1; and many nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in
death by one brother, Larry Pyle, in 1991. The funeral service was
conducted Friday from the
George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with Rev. Walter E.
Williams officiating.

RHOADS, ANNA J. ------- Anna J. Rhoads, 87, of Sunbury, died Wednesday,
March 13, 1996 at 9:05 a.m. at her residence.
She was born in County Sligo, Ireland, December 15, 1908, the daughter
of the late Martin and
Maria [Loftus] McCann. She married Arlin Rhoads May 5, 1946. She
and her husband owned and
operated Rhoads Nursery of Richfield and Sunbury. She was a member
of St. Monica Church,
Sunbury. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Thomas
E. Rhoads of Sunbury;
two grandchildren; one brother, Michael McCann of County Sligo, Ireland;
and three sisters,
Agnes Doherty and Lilly McCann, both of County Sligo, Ireland, and Mary
Ross of Sandusky, OH.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Della Bourke. Mass of Christian
Burial was
celebrated Friday at St. Monica Church, with Rev. William Haviland, the
celebrant. Burial was
made in the All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. The Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral
Home, Sunbury, was in
charge of arrangements.

RICKENBAUGH, ROBERT B. - Robert B. "Rick" Rickenbaugh, 63, of Edgerton,
MN died Saturday, February 3, 1996 at
Minnesota Veterans Home, Luverne, MN. He had been a patient there since
April 26, 1995. Born
November 14, 1932 in Bumham, he was the son of Charles and Gladys Rickenbaugh.
He was raised
in McAlisterville, where he received his education. September 2, 1950 he
entered the United
States Air Force. He served in the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1953 and
in Germany from
1956 to 1959. In 1962 he was assigned to Chandler Air Force Base,
Chandler MN. There he met
Beverly Vos, and they married September 9, 1962 at First Presbyterian Church,
Slayton.
Following their marriage they resided in Edgerton, MN, and Rick continued
on assignment at
Chandler A.F.B. In 1965, he went on active duty in Vietnam and returned
in 1966. He was
then assigned to a base in Sioux City, IA, and they lived there for 1-1/2
years. In 1968,
they returned to Edgerton, and Rick continued at Chandler A.F.B. until
his retirement from
the Air Force in 1971. Prior to retiring from the Air Force, he was
a part-time mechanic at
DeBoer Chevrolet in Edgerton for 13-1/2 years, until he became ill.
He is lovingly
remembered by his wife Beverly of Edgerton; children, Kimberly Kae and
Kevin Hunstad,
Jasper, MN, Charles F. "Chuck" and Lynette, Omaha, NE, Steven E. and Cassandra
"Sandy,"
Sioux Falls, SD and Robert L. "Rob" and Julie, Edgerton; four grandchildren,
Michael
Hunstad, Megan Hunstad, Dylan Rickenbaugh and Courtney Swenson; a sister,
Cindy Peel,
McAlisterville; a brother, Ronald, Mifflintown; and numerous nieces and
nephews. In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepmother, Bessie; a brother,

nephew; and a brother-in-law. Services were held Wednesday, February 7

Church, Edgerton, MN, with Rev. Harold Preston officiating. Interment was
in Chandler

died Wednesday, February 7, 1996, at home. He
was born October 11, 1911 in Millerstown to Joseph M. and Anna [Winey)
Sarver. He was retired
from the former Pennsylvania Railroad and was a selfemployed truck driver
for Texaco Oil
Company. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Newport,
Millerstown Moose No. 925,
Newport American Legion Post No. 177 and a life member of the Juniata Saddle
Club. He is
survived by his wife, Bertha Borhman Sarver, a brother, Millard A. Sarver,
Liverpool RR; a
stepson, Howard Z. Fisher, New Cumberland; a stepdaughter, Nora Mae Varner,
Felton; a cousin,
Inez Parker, Mifflintown; ten step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by a stepson, George D. Fisher. Funeral services

SCHRADER, ESTHER MAE -- Esther M. Schrader, 88, of Harrisburg, died
Saturday, February 24, 1996, at her residence.
Born in West Perry Township, Snyder County, December 3, 1907, she was the
daughter of the
late Albert S. and Mary Mitterling Schrawder. She was educated in
Snyder County rural
schools. Mrs. Schrader retired many years ago from her employment
at the Dauphin County
Courthouse, where she did custodial duties. She was of the Protestant
faith. Mrs. Schrader
enjoyed reading religious texts and viewed many programs of religion on
television. She is
survived by one daughter, Mrs. Betty J. Dinger, also of Harrisburg; five
grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter,
Loretta Fabian, and
four brothers. Graveside funeral services were conducted Tuesday
at Richfield Union Cemetery
by Rev. Jerry R. O'Connell, pastor of Richfield Mennonite Church.

Mifflintown, died Friday, January 19, 1996 at the home of her daughter
and son-in-law, Lois
and Vernon Magee, Woodbine. Born November 9, 1895, she was the daughter
of the late Andrew
B. And Jennie S. [Thompson] Criswell. Her husband, Charles Benjamin
Schrider, preceded her
in death, as did two sons, C. Marlin Schrider, Mt. Airy, MD, and Eugene
T. Schrider,
Monrovia; three sisters, Mrs. Alvie [Estella] Reigle, Mrs. William L. [Merla]
Hile and Mrs.
J.C. [Marian Eva] Beward; and two brothers, John A. Criswell and Fred M.
Criswell, both of
Lewistown. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence [Marian]
Hough, Stouts Mills,
WV, and Mrs. Vernon [Lois] Magee; two sons, Ernest A. Schrider, Berkley
Springs, WV, and
Robert Schrider, Taylorsville, MD; a sister, Anna C. Woodward, Mifflintown;

She was reared in
Mifflintown and graduated from Mifflintown High School in 1912. While in
Monrovia she won
many prizes for her roses and mums. She was a member of Taylorsville Methodist
Church.
Funeral services were held January 22 from the Berrier-Queen Funeral Home,
with Rev. Arthur
Kent Morgan Chapel Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in
Morgan Chapel Cemetery.

his home as the result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
He was an employee of
Triangle Car Wash, Mechanicsburg, and was a graduate of West Perry High
School. He was a
member of Mannsville Lutheran Church, Elliottsburg. Surviving are

SHEARER, WADE McCLELLAN - Wade McClellan Shearer, 74, of East Waterford
RR1, died at 4:00 p.m. Friday, February 2,
1996, at his life-long home near the village of Waterloo. He had been able
and active
despite longstanding health problems. He was born May 3, 1921 in Lack Township,
Juniata
County, a son of the late David M. and Florence E. [Henry] Shearer.
His wife, Mary E.
[Henderson] Shearer, died December 31, 1994. Surviving are a son,
David W. Shearer, East
Waterford RR1; a daughter, Capt. Susanne Shearer Westman, U.S. Air Force,
McGuire AFB, New
Jersey; and four grandsons, David, Daniel, Adam and Zachary Shearer.
He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Clair W. and Clyde V. Shearer, and a sister, Catharine
J. [Shearer]
Gloss. He was a 1939 graduate of Fannett High School, a member of
Dorsett Grange No. 1888,
Concord, East Waterford Fire Co. and Ambulance Division and devoted a lifetime
to dairy
farming. He had been a trapper, blacksmith and cider maker and enjoyed
storytelling,
hunting, fishing and playing guitar. Funeral services were held Tuesday
day from Upper
Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, with Revs. Mark Thomson and Clyde
Brown
officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. The Henry Funeral

1988. She is survived
by several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family,
having been preceded
in death by one brother, Andrew Bashore, ashore, and one sister, Edna Shirk.
She retired in
1970 with 35 years of service as an elementary school teacher for Central
Dauphin School
District. She was a 1924 graduate of Mifflintown High School and
a 1928 graduate of
Shippensburg Normal School. She was a member of Free Spring Church
of the Brethren and its
Sunday school, Mifflintown RR2, Pennsylvania State Education Association,
life member of
National Education Association, Dauphin County Retired Teachers Association
and Linglestown
Garden Club. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday,
February 7, from the
Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge Street, Mifflintown, with Rev. Terry G.
Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Oakland Mills. Viewing

at the village.
Born October 7, 1916, in Fermanagh Township, she was the daughter of the
late Charles C.
and, Mary Elizabeth [Shover] Shellenberger. Surviving are two sisters,
Mrs. Al [Mary E.]
Resko, Locust Grove Retirement Village, and Ruby Naomi Clark, Lima, PA,
and several
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers,
John Shellenberger, Sam
Shellenberger, L.O. Shellenberger and one sister, Minerva Jane Lawrence.
She refired in
1980 as a nurse's aide from Lewistown Hospital. Earlier in life she had
served 10 years
in Uruguay and 10 years in Puerto Rico as a missionary. She was a
member of Kingdom Hall
of Jehovah's Witnesses, Mifflintown. Services were held Tuesday at
Brown Funeral Home,
Mifflintown, with J. Michael Wagner officiating. Interment was in
Westminster

SHELLENBERGER, J. HARRY - J. Harry Shellenberger, 92, formerly of McAlisterville,
died at 11:55 a.m. Saturday,
January 20, 1996 at Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin, where
he had been a
resident since June 1993. Born June 9, 1903 in McAlisterville, he
was a son of the late
John H. and Bertha J. [Rupert] Shellenberger. Surviving are: a sister,
Ruth A, Bortell,
Millerstown; several nieces and nephews. He was never married but
his lifelong friend,
Esther Lauver, died in 1995. He took over the family business, Shellenberger's
Fruit Farm,
McAlisterville, in 1940 and operated the business for about 40 years.
He graduated from
Mifflintown High School in 1921. He was a member of the Bunkertown
Church of the Brethren,
McAlisterville RR1, and the Mifflintown Rotary Club. Services were
held Monday at the
Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with Rev. Elwood O. Johnson
officiating.
Interment was in Goodwill Cemetery, McAlisterville RR1.

SHEMORY, E. HAROLD ---- Mr. E. Harold "J.R." Shemory, 51, of Freeburg,
died at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 10, 1996 at
Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after being flown from Evangelical
Community Hospital,
Lewisburg, that day. Mr. Shemory had surgery February 22, 1996 and was
doing well until he
was suddenly stricken on Sunday at his residence. Born August 9,
1944 at Northumberland
County, he was a son of the late Elmer Harvey and Treva R. Stahlnecker
Shemory. December 18,
1965, he was united in marriage to the former Patricia A. Lauver, who survives.
The couple
recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Mr. Shemory graduated
in 1962 from
Mifflinburg High School. At the time of his death, he was employed
by American Home Foods,
Milton, as a laborer; he began work with the corporation in February 1967.
Memberships
included Church of the Nazarene, Selinsgrove, where he was social coordinator
of the
Ambassador Sunday School Class and a member of the Promise Keepers, a church
membership
group. He was a life member of Freeburg Volunteer Fire Company, United
Food and Commercial
Workers Union, Local No. 38, Milton, Dauntless Hook and Ladder Fire Company
and Ambulance
League, Selinsgrove, and Pennsylvania National Guard, Lewisburg Unit. He
was an avid hunter
and loved to travel, especially to Florida with his wife. Mr. Shemory had
a long history with
Boy Scouting. He began in 1977 as a Webelos leader in Freeburg. He served
Freeburg Troop No.
490 as Scout Master for ten years and had ten Eagle Scouts at that time,
one being his son,
Scott. Mr. Shemory earned his Scout Masters Key for Adult Leader Training
in 1980 and was
inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 1980. In 1987 he received the Buffalo
Trails District
Award of Merit. At the time of his death, he was serving as unit commissioner
for Troop No.
490. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Scott H. Shemory,
Freeburg; a
brother, Donald Shemory, Mifflinburg; and a sister, Shirley Smith, Lewisburg.
The funeral
service was conducted Thursday from the Church of the Nazarene, Selinsgrove,
with Rev.
Charles H. Melton officiating. interment was made in the Evergreen Cemetery,
Freeburg. The

Mifflintown, died at 12:10p.m. Tuesday, December 26, 1995 at Lewistown
Hospital. She was born
August 9, 1921 in Mifflintown, to the late Herman G. and Marie T. [Zeiders]
Longacre. She was
the widow of Roy T. Wells, who preceded her in death in 1952. She
is survived by one son,
Glenn I. Shirk Jr., Lewistown; one sister, Marie T. Cunningham, Pine Bluff,
AR; and one
granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one son, C. Christopher
Wells; one brother,
Keith Longacre; and one sister, Janet Usic. She was a 1939 graduate
of Juniata Joint High
School, Mifflintown. She was a registered nurse, having worked in
various nursing homes in
the Juniata County area for over 50 years, and she worked as a nurse for
the Juniata County
Fair Association for many years. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran
Church, Mifflintown.
She had served as chairperson of the Red Cross Bloodmobile for seven years
and had been the
activities director for the March of Dimes. Memorial services were
held Thursday from Brown
Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Claude R. Baublitz officiating. Burial
was in
Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Memorial contributions

Lewistown Hospital. Born March 3, 1910, in Juniata County, he was
a son of the late George
W. and Margaret [Jones] Shirk. His wife, Essalinda [Walters] .Shirk, whom
he married December
20, 1933, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Charles
G. [Arlene] Zeigler, Milroy
RR1; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Herring, Tremont, Mrs. Mary Hatter, Virginia
Beach, VA; three
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by three brothers, John
Shirk, Harry Shirk and Jerome Shirk and five sisters, Elizabeth Arentz,
Erma Smith, Almeda
McNaight, Dorothy Fry and Beulah Wise. He was a self-employed carpenter
and a member of St.
Stephen's Lutheran Church, Licking Creek, Turbett Grange No. 781 and Friendship
Fire Co.,
Port Royal. Services were held Friday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal,
with Rev. Howard D.
Houtz officiating. Interment was in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.

SHOPE, MAGGIE MAY ----- Mrs. Maggie M. Shope, 80, of Liverpool RR1,
died at 11:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, 1996 at
her residence. She was in poor health for the past few years. Born at Liverpool,
Perry
County, March 2, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John and Lillian
Casey Goodling. Her
husband, George Mahlon Shope, preceded her in death September 20, 1994.
For over 25 years,
Mrs. Shope was employed as a seamstress for many shirt and dress factories
in the Richfield,
Millerstown, Liverpool and Mt. Pleasant Mills areas. She retired in the
late 1970s at the age
of 62. She was Protestant by faith and had a membership in the Liverpool
Ambulance League.
She enjoyed and was accomplished at crafting and crocheting. Surviving
are two sons, Marlin
G. Shope, Liverpool RR1, with whom she made her home, and Maynard L. Shope,
Liverpool RR1;
five daughters, Catherine M. Cluck, Richfield RR1, Marie A. Shelley, Richfield
RR1, Irene E.
Troutman, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2, and Bertha P. Lamey, Mill Hall RR1. Also
surviving are four
brothers, Woodrow Goodling, Millerstown RR2, Charles Goodling, Liverpool
RR2, Kenneth
Goodling, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR1, and Lyle Goodling, North Carolina; two
sisters, Florence
Kerstetter, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2, and Mary Hile, Liverpool RR1; 36 grandchildren;
57 great-
grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Mrs, Shope was preceded
in death by one son,
Mahlon; one daughter, Mildred F. Strawser; two grandchildren; and seven
brothers, Harry,
George, Wesley, Norman, Henry, Earl and Ray Goodling. The funeral
service was conducted
Saturday from the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with Rev. James
A. Neimond
officiating. Burial was made in Barner's [St. John] Cemetery, Liverpool
RR 1.

March 5, 1996, at Wilkes Barre General Hospital, Wilkes Barre. She was
born August 8, 1920 in
Mifflin, to the late James and Mary M. [Shettle] Clark. Her husband, Jack
R. Shover, preceded
her in death March 17, 1974. She is survived by one son, Jack R.
Shover, Kingston; two
sisters, Thelma Swab, Mifflintown RR3, and Evelyn Bratton, West Palm Beach,
FL; seven
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by one brother, Robert
Clark, and one sister, Ruth Crozier. She was a homemaker and member
of Trinity United
Methodist Church, Mifflin. Funeral services were held Saturday from
the Brown Funeral Home,

31, 1913 in Lack Township,
Juniata County, to the late Albert and Bertha [Scott] Vaughan. She is survived
by her
husband, John L. Sieber, whom she married June 29, 1942. Also surviving
are one son, John B.
Sieber, Brewer, ME; one daughter, Mrs. George T. (Kay S.] Varner, Mifflintown
RR5; one
sister, Esther Vaughan, Bryn Mawr; three brothers, Orlando Vaughan, East
Waterford, John
Vaughan, Broadheadsville, and Harry Vaughan, Goldsboro, NC; and three grandchildren.
She was
preceded in death by two brothers, Max Vaughan and Blair Vaughan.
In earlier life she served
as a cook for the Hershey Industrial School and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Messiah
Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, and its Sisterhood Sunday School Class.

held Monday from Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, with Rev. William
N. Esborn
officiating. Burial was in Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Oakland Mills.

Kate [Hench] Sigler. He is survived by his wife, Reba H. [Henry]
Sigler, whom he married

the Pearl Harbor
Attack Association and was a life member of the Charles M. Nitterhouse

Layman Stump, who died in 1976. She was a retired schoolteacher,
specializing in remedial
reading and enrichment reading, teaching in Philadelphia Upper Gwynedd
and North Penn school
districts for 43 years. She retired July 1, 1967. She was a
member of St. Stephen's
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, and a former member of Aldersgate
United Methodist
Church, Mifflintown, and First United Methodist Church, Lansdale. She was
also a member of
the Order of the Eastern Star, a life member of Pennsylvania State Education
Association -
Retired, the National Education Association-Retired Milford Grange No.
733, Pomona Grange,
Juniata County Historical Society and Mifflin County retired Teachers Association.

after suffering a massive stroke at his residence. He had no coronary history.
Born July 18,
1934 in Perry Township [Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2], Snyder County, he was
the son of the late
William Dietz and the late Hulda Pauline Teats Mengle, who died October
28, 1992. He was
married to the former Vesta Knepp, who died November 8, 1989. Mr.
Teats attended Freeburg
High School. He entered the United States Navy in November 1955 and was
honorably discharged
in August 1957. He was employed as a carpenter from 1968 for the
Carpenter's Union, Local
No. 76, Hazleton. He retired in July 1995. He enjoyed hunting and
fishing. In earlier years
he attended God's Missionary Church of Beavertown, Middleburg RR 1, and
more recently had
attended Dressler's Ridge United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills,
RR2. He was a member
of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local No. 76,

The funeral service was conducted Friday, March 22, in God's Missionary
Church of Beavertown
Middleburg RR1, with Rev. James Plank officiating and Rev. Lear E. Shambach
assisting.
Interment was in God's Missionary Church Cemetery, Middleburg RR1.

TERWILLIGER, CLARENCE EUGENE - Dr. Clarence Eugene Terwilliger, 70,
of Liverpool RR1, died at 12:15 a.m., Friday,
January 12, 1996, at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg where he had
been a patient
since January 3. Death was sudden and unexpected. Born October 23,
1925, in Johnson
City, Broome County, NY, he was the son of the late Clarence D. and Lena
[Dunning]
Terwilliger. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy [Zaring] Terwilliger,
whom he married
December 23, 1947. Also surviving is one son, Donald E. "Bud" Terwilliger,
at home.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Reed and Laura Babcock.
Dr.
Terwilliger graduated from Johnson City High School in 1943. He entered
Eastern
Nazarene College in Quincy, MA. His college education was interrupted by
entrance into
the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945 where he served as a corporal and was later
stationed
in Vesbadden, Germany. Following his military service, he continued at
Eastern
Nazarene College and later received a degree in osteopathic medicine from
the School
of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery at Kansas City, MO, in 1959. He did
his internship
at Riverside Osteopathic Hospital, Trenton, MI. He entered general practice
at
Metamora, MI, in 1960. He served Lapeer County, MI, from 1960-1977
as a doctor on the
staff of Lapeer County General Hospital and as Lapeer County Coroner for
17 years.
In 1964, he became Medical Director at the Old County Home that developed
into Lapeer
County Extended Care Facility. He served as camp physician for the Girl
and Boy Scouts
for the greater Detroit area. While school physician for the Metamora area,
his wife
served as his nurse assistant as she did with many phases of his duty tours.
He and
his family moved to the Liverpool area in 1977 and he took over the late
Dr. Charles
Yoder's office in McAlisterville. He also served as school physician
for East Juniata
High School. In 1980, he received approval to also practice on the
staff of Ephrata
Community Hospital and Lancaster County Osteopathic Hospital, where he
was coordinator
of the emergency room. In 1985, he retired from private practice.
He then became
associated with Selinsgrove Center until his retirement in 1991. He allended
Richfield
Mennonite Church, Richfield and was a member of the American Osteopathic
Association,
the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Society of Contemporary
Medicine and Surgery, the American College of Geriatric Physicians, and
the American
College of General Practice in Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.
Additionally, he had
memberships in the Medical Laboratory Technicians of America, the Pennsylvania
Osteopathic Association, the Michigan Osteopathic Association, the America
Mennonite
Medical Association, the Lancaster County Menonite Medical Association
and the
National Rifle Association. His leisure time activities included
woodworking,
hunting, fishing and various other hobbies. Services will be held
at 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday, January 17, at Richfield Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jerry
R. O'Connell
officiating. Interment will be in Liverpool Union Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to The Gideon's International, c/o P.O.

TOMPKINS, MARGARET B. - Mrs. Margaret B. Tompkins, 88, of Richfield
RR 1, died Monday, January 29, 1996 at her
residence. She was born November 28, 1907 in Brooklyn, NY. She was
educated in the
Canandaigua Schools, New York, furthered her education in social service
work at Vassar
College, Poughkeepsie, NY, graduating there in 1929, and then from Smith
College at Boston,
MA, with graduation in social services in 1931. Mrs. Tompkins was
married to Herschel
Malcolm Tompkins, who preceded her in death February 6, 1988. They
had moved to Richfield in
1978. She was a member of Richfield United Methodist Church, was
an active member of the
Richfield Neighborhood Senior Citizens and also participated with the annual
Richfield Dutch
Days Committee. She was employed by several social service agencies,
retiring in 1972 from
Family and Children Services, Allentown. Mrs. Tompkins was the last
of her immediate family.
There will be no services, at her request. Memorial contributions

TRAVITZ, ESTHER E. ---- Esther E. "Cricket" Travitz, 89, formerly of
McAlisterville and Millerstown, died at 3:35
p.m., Thursday, January 4, 1996, at Brookline Manor Convalescent Home,
Mifflintown RR1, where
she had been a resident since April 1994. She was born April 7, 1906 in
Juniata, Altoona, the
daughter of the late William W. and Elizabeth [Long] Zeiders. Her
husband, James C. Travitz,
whom she married December 1, 1928, died in 1980. She is survived by two
sons, Jam C. Travitz,
Duncannon, and William A. Travitz Sr., Harrisburg; a daughter, Esther A.
Smith,
McAlisterville; two sisters, Thelma Stanley, North Canton, OH, and Vivian
Cornelius, Altoona;
seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased
by a daughter, Ruth
Long; two brothers, Lester and William Travitz; and one grandchild. She
attended schools in
the Juniata, Altoona area. She was employed for over 20 years as a seamstress
for Blough-
Wagner Co., Millerstown, beginning in the 1930s. She later worked in the
kitchen of Nipple's
Nursing Home, Liverpool. She was a member of McAlisterville United
Methodist Church and was
a very active member of the McAlisterville Senior Citizens Center.
The funeral service was
held Sunday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with
Rev. James R.
Sunderland Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Riverview Cemetery,
Millerstown.

USNER, GAIL L. -------- Gail L. Usner, 42, of Ephrata, Lancaster County,
died Saturday morning, December 23, 1995, at
12:10 a.m. in Bringham & Women's Hospital, Boston, MA, following a
five-month illness. Born
in Ephrata, she was the daughter of Earl S. and Esther B. [Spangler] Usner,
Ephrata. She was
employed for the past 19 years as a second grade teacher at Bergstrasse
Elementary School of
the Ephrata Area School District. Gail was a 1971 graduate of Ephrata
Senior High School,
where she began her other career as a baton twirler in seventh grade. She
was drum major of
the senior high marching band, The Purple Pride, during her senior year
and continued as
assistant band director from 1972-91, being instructor for the color guard
and twirlers. The
band won Pennsylvania State Championship in 1979 while under her direction.
She was a
graduate of Shippensburg University, where she was captain of the majorettes
of the marching
band for two years, and also received her master's degree in elementary
education. Gail was a
member of the PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association], NEA [National
Education
Association] and the EAEA [Ephrata Area Education Association]. She was
on the board of the
Parent-Teachers Organization at Bergstrasse Elementary School. She was
director of the Indoor
Color Guard of Ephrata Senior High School from 1976-81, winning the state
championship in
1980. She was an instructor for the color guard and twirling units for
many years at Warwick
Senior High School, Lititz, and Manheim Township Senior High School, Lancaster.
She was a
member of the Mid-Adantic Judges Association for Marching Band & Color
Guard Competitions and
a member of the Cavalcade Indoor Judge Association for Color Guard and
Twirling Units. Ms.
Usner was head swimming instructor from 1969-80 for the Ephrata Recreation
Center Swimming
Program, where she received the outstanding Red Cross Instructor Award.
She also was
co-director of the Cumberland Regional High School Band, Seabrook, NJ,
from 1981-1995, and
was director of the Cumberland Regional Color Guard Unit, which won six
Middle-Adantic
Championships under her direction. Over the past several years, Ms.
Usner was involved with
a pen pal program with a Juniata County elementary school. Surviving,
in addition to her
parents, are her significant other, James A. Althouse; two sisters, Audrey,
wife of Quentin
Gibble, and Barbara, wife of Nevin Sheaffer; a brother, Randall, husband
of Peg Usner, all of
Ephrata; and eight nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held
Thursday from The Michael
Tod Good Funeral Horne, Reamstown, PA. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery,
Ephrata.

VAN HORN, PAUL L. ----- Paul L. Van Horn, 66, of HC 63, McAlisterville,
died at 5:34 am. Thursday, February 22, 1996,
at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. Born May 31, 1929, in Delaware
Township, he was a
son of the late Raymond and Bertha [Speece] Van Horn. His wife, Esther
[Barton] Van Horn,
preceded him in death. He is survived by a companion, Frances Foltz.

He was retired from
Conrail and currently served as a Notary Public. He was president
of the McAlisterville
Community Park Board. He was a member of Union Lodge No. 324 F&AM,
the Harrisburg Consistory
and the Fayette Lions Club. Services were held Sunday at Guss Funeral
Home, Mifflintown,
with Rev. Terry Sheldon officiating. Interment was in Lost Creek Presbyterian
Cemetery,

grandparents, Barbara and
Harry Yarko of Greencastle, and her paternal grandmother, Lenore Waggoner
of Thompsontown.

WELLER, VADA M. ------- Vada M. Weller, 78, of Thompsontown, died Thursday
morning, February 1, 1996, at her
residence. She was born in Thompsontown February 6, 1917, the daughter
of the late Walter and
Florence [Colyer] Hostetler. Her husband, Harry Weller, whom she
married December 26, 1936,
died June 12, 1958. She is survived by three sons, Donald Weller,
McAlisterville, Ronald
Weller, Harrisburg, and Robert Weller, Liverpool; one daughter, Jane Frey,
Liverpool; seven
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She attended Goodville
Elementary School,
Thompsontown RR1. She had been employed by the Juniata County School
District as a cook at
Thompsontown Elementary School from 1958 to 1966, after which she was employed
as a
seamstress for the East Salem Shirt Factory, East Salem, retiring in 1988.
She was a member
of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown, Lutheran Christian Women, Wednesday
Club of
Thompsontown, Thompsontown fire and ambulance companies, AARP and Thompsontown
Senior
Citizens. The funeral service was held Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran
Church, Thompsontown,
with Rev. James Park Bricker officiating. Interment followed in the church
cemetery.

born October 19, 1908 in
East Waterford, to the late Wayne Kirk. She was the widow of Banks Weller.
She was also
preceded in death by her first husband, Murry Maxwell Breon and her second
husband, Ort
Campbell. She is survived by a daughter, Mona B. Filler, Mifflintown RR2;
four grandchildren;
and five greatgrandchildren. She was a member of the Assembly of
God Church, Mifflintown and
she was a homemaker. Private services and burial were held at the
convenience of the family.

28, 1996 at his residence. He was born December 26, 1925 in Hollidaysburg,
Blair County, to
the late Dorothy M. White. He is survived by one son, Walter B. White,
Churchville, VA; two
daughters, Stephanie J. Baylett, Mifflintown RR3, and Ruth T. Poticher,
Marysville; one
sister, Mary Jean Vogelsong, Allentown; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In
earlier life he was a carpenter and retired on disability. He was
a WWII U.S. Army Veteran,
having served in the European Theater. Graveside services were held Friday
at Indiantown Gap

WHITEHEAD, ETHEL M. --- Ethel M. Whitehead, 101, of Altoona, died Tuesday,
November 14, 1995, at the Presbyterian
Horne of Hollidaysburg, following a brief illness. She was born October
25, 1894 in Altoona,
the daughter of Banks Olin and Laura [Kauffman] Shellenberger. She
married Charles R.
Whitehead October 24, 1919 in Altoona. He died June 5, 1958. Mrs.
Whitehead was the 'oldest
member of First Church of the Brethren, where she was a member of the Gleaners
Sunday School
Class and the Ladies' Missionary Society. She was a 1916 graduate
of Altoona High School.
Surviving are two daughters, June Louise Barley of Harrisburg and JoAnne
Giordano of Altoona;
a sister, Eleanor Clouser of Altoona; four grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren.
Services were held at Daniel R. Myers Funeral Horne, by Rev. Frank Oessenich
and Rev. David
Haydu. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg. He was born in McAlisterville,
June 24,
1924, the son of the late Frank A. and Iva Esther [Shellenberger] Writer.
He is survived by
his wife, the former Geraldine E. Auker, whom he married June 25, 1949;
a daughter, Lisa
Crumlich, Harrisburg; a sister, Helen N. Sieber, McAlisterville; and three
grandsons. He
graduated from Fayette High School, McAlisterville, in the Class of 1943.
He retired in 1986
after more than 25 years as a bookkeeper for Swartz Supply, Inc., Harrisburg.
He was a member
of the West Shore Coin Club, Camp Hill, and Paxton Church of the Brethren,
Harrisburg, where
he had been the treasurer for many years. The funeral service will
be held at 11:00 a.m.,
Wednesday, February 14, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville,
with Rev.
Gavin L. Whitcomb officiating. A viewing and visitation will be held from
10:00 a.m. until
the time of the service. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

A. [Knepp]
Zeigler, whom he married August 28, 1983. He retired from Jay-Wood,
Milroy in 1992 after 17
years' service. A Lutheran, he was a United States Army veteran,
having served in the
Pennsylvania National Guard for seven years. In addition to his wife,
he is survived by
children, Mrs. Robert [Sonya I.] Zimmerman, Mifflintown, John R. Zeigler,
Wayne C. Zeigler
and Mrs. Lynn [Malinda M.] Snook, all of McClure; brothers, George L. Zeigler,
Florida,
Robert S. Zeigler, Reedsville, John W. Zeigler and Charles Glen Zeigler,

He was
preceded in death by four brothers and a granddaughter. Funeral services
