W. Willis, her husband, by Ind. dated — in the year afsd., convey to Matthew
Maury for £800 a tract of land in Orange Co., being the inheritance
of the sd. Ann, and by her the sd. Ann agreed to be sold for the express
purpose of paying the sd. Jno. W. Willis' debts, in consideration of the
sd. Ann's releasing her right, title, etc., in the sd. land to one Jonathan

Augt. 6, 1789. John Whitaker Willis of Spts. Co., Gent., and Ann, his
wife, to Lewis Willis, Larkin Chew, Oliver Towles of same county. Whereas,
the sd. J. W. Willis and Ann, his wife, being seized and possessed of sundry
tracts of land in her right (and as her inheritance is of very considerable
value, greater than the same actually sold for, etc.), situate in Orange
Co., and the sd. J. W. Willis is largely indebted to sundry persons, the
sd. Ann consented to, and in order to relieve her sd. husband, etc., joined
in conveyances of two tracts of land and sold the same for the sole purpose
of applying the amounts therefrom realized, abt. £1560, to the paying
of the sd. debts upon condition of the sd. J. W. Willis' conveying to the
sd. Larkin Chew the tract of land in Spts. Co., whereon sd. Willis, etc.,
lived, in trust for the several purposes mentioned in Ind. dated May 1,
1787, and also on condition of his conveying to Lewis Willis and Oliver
Towles, parties herein named, for the benefit of the sd. Ann and her children,
30 slaves for the purposes mentioned in an Ind. dated April 27, 1788, and
whereas, the sd. Willis being still largely indebted, and the sd. Ann having
consented to sell and dispose of another tract of land in Albermarle and
Orange Counties and by Ind. dated this day, the sd. tract has been conveyed
to the sd. Towles to be sold in consideration of the premises, etc., the
sd. Willis does convey to the sd. Lewis Willis, Larkin Chew and Oliver
Towles, all his right, title, interest, etc., in the sd. 30 slaves and
the Spots. Co. lands as afsd. in trust for the benefit of the sd. Ann and
her children begotten or to be begotten by the sd. Jno. W. Willis, etc.,

Fredksbg., of the third part. Whereas, Nicho. Payne,
Gent., by Ind. dated April 25, 1791, conveyed to sd. Stockley Towles (to
indemnify him, he being sd. Payne's security),
his, the sd. Payne's interest and title in
a tract of 446 a. in Spots. Co., known as "Pennfield" (one moiety being
claimed by the heirs of Wm. Reveley, decd., and the other by sd. Payne
by virtue of their purchase), purchased of Oliver Towles, and the sd. Stockley
Towles being forced to sell the same, and the sd. Oliver Towles never having
conveyed the same as yet to the afsd. Payne,
the sd. Oliver Towles joins in this conveyance. Witnesseth, the sd. Stockley
Towles, in consideration of the sum of £71 curr. to be applied to
indemnification of sd. Stockley, and pd. to him by the sd. Glassell, conveys
to him the sd. Glassell, the right, title, etc., of the sd. Payne,

Septr. 3, 1832. John Pierce of Spts. Co., aged 79 years. Volunteered
in Spts. Co., where he was born and has always lived. In Augt., 1775, was
in Colo. Joseph Brock's company who volunteered then as a Captain; marched
through Caroline and Hanover Counties and James River Country to Wms'burg
where he was put under command of Genl. Charles Scott and guarded the Capital
and College landings, remained there abt. 50 days; returned home in Augt.,
1777. Volunteered in Spts. Co. under command of Capt. Thomas Bartlett,
marched to Wms'burg. and was placed under command of Colo. Thomas Nelson,
etc.; remained in service at Wms'burg abt. 2 mos. and returned home. On
Jany. 10, 1781, he was called out as militia man under Capt. Jno. Carter,
marched as his orderly sergeant to Hanover C. H., where Gen. Geo. Weedon
ordered the company to Fredksbg., he remained there more than 2 mos. and
was then discharged, he returned home again and was called out in Sept.,
1781, by Capt. Nicholas Payne, collected beeves
all over the country and drove them with the company to Wms'burg. where
they were delivered to Commissary Pierce; in this service he was engaged
abt. 50 days. He was discharged 2 days before the surrender of Yorktown.
He was born Decr. 20, 1752. Well recollects Colo. Towles, Colo. McWilliams,
Colo. Mercer, Colo. Stubblefield, and Capt. Jno. Tankersley.
