"Eli, Eli"

[candle]

"Eli, Eli"

The words of this song, the title of which means "Oh Lord, My God", were written by Hannah Senesh, a Jewish heroine of World War II, who was killed after being captured in Hungary, during an effort to save Allied prisoners of war and organize Jewish resistance.

Eli, Eli,
Shelo yigamer leolam,
Ha-hol v'ha-yam,
Rishrush shel ha-mayim,
Barak bashamayim,
Tfilat ha-adam.
Oh Lord, my God,
May these things never end,
The sand and the sea,
The rustle of the water,
Lightening in the sky,
The prayer of man.

Note that the translation to English is mine. The accepted translation (which makes the song "singable" in English) goes like this:

Oh Lord, my God,
I pray that these things never end,
The sand and the sea,
The rush of the waters,
The crash of the heavens,
The prayer of man.
