We are also able to trace our relationship with the Groenewald and Beyers families in South Africa, as well as with other early Dutch and German settlers at the Cape. We are indebted to Pama and to Hofmyer for many of the early family links references. Verification of these relationships has been relatively easy via early church records and reference to the South African National Archives.
Both the Groenewald and the Beyers families
farmed in the Stellenbosch district - about 50 Km (30 miles) from Cape Town -
from the early 1700s. In these earlier years there was a fair bit of intermarriage between the
extended Groenewald and Beyers families. Marriages between second cousins
were not unusual, while young widows and widowers also invariably
remarried. This resulted in many interesting and complex
relationships.
