Martin B. Hutchison was a private in Company L, 8th Kentucky Volunteer
Cavalry (U.S.). He joined with two of his brothers - William L. Hutchison
was a Corporal in the company, and Robert W. Hutchison was the Wagoner.
They were all from Ballard County, Kentucky, and recruited by Capt. Elisha
Owens, who died when another company accidently fired upon them, believing
them to be Confederates. All three brothers served for the one-year
enlistment and mustered out together. They were sons of Nathaniel
Overall Hutchison. Martin re-enlisted and served with the 136th Illinois
Infantry, serving as Third Sergeant. He returned to Ballard County
after the war, but in the 1890's he moved to Metropolis, Illinois, where
he died in 1912.
