"We’re going to the Zoo!…"
Final Zoo Instructions & Information for 5th grade parents and students from Mr. Schwantz
Will we meet at Wyneken? No!!! We are meeting at the zoo! The Wild Nights program begins at 6:00 p.m. this Friday. Please try your best to insure that your child is there before this time. We will meet at the zoo entrance.
Where should I park or drop-off/pick-up? Park in the main zoo parking lot. Overnighters--do not leave any valuables in your car. A zoo guide will meet us in the parking lot and escort us to the Discovery Center.
What if I can’t arrive by 6:00 P.M.? Please let me know as soon as possible. Please tell me the exact time you can arrive, and the zoo can then have a security guard meet you in the main parking lot.
What if it rains? Wild Nights happens no matter what weather. Dress for the weather, since we will hike outdoors. BRING AN UMBRELLA IN CASE OF RAIN.
Do the kids camp outside? No!! We are sleeping inside, in the comfort of the Discovery Center under the shadow of the lovely new worm exhibit. The building will be locked from the outside, and adults will sleep stationed at the exits.
What should my child bring? Weather appropriate clothing, change of clothes for Saturday, toothpaste and toothbrush; comb or brush; sleeping bag and pillow; WRITE YOUR CHILD’S NAME ON EACH ITEM. Optional items are a foam pad (for sleep) and a camera (no film will be sold there—we are not going to the gift shop at all). STUDENTS DO NOT NEED MONEY (nothing is open, and all expenses have been paid) AND DO NOT NEED FLASHLIGHTS.
What will they eat? Students will be fed by the zoo (instead of being fed to the zoo, if you know what I mean). They will be given pizza and pop, late night snack, and continental breakfast. IF YOUR CHILD HAS A SPECIAL DIET, PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOOD FOR THEM TO EAT.
Who’s watching the kids? Mr. Schwantz and some parents are attending (IT’S STILL NOT TOO LATE TO ATTEND—COST IS $15.00), and will help maintain discipline. If any disciplinary problems arise, parents may be called to pick up their child and/or punishment at school could be issued. The zoo provides a zoo instructor and an adult volunteer to lead the programs.
When should I pick up my child? Students can be picked up starting at 8:30 A.M., and must be picked up no later than 9:00 A.M. Students are dismissed once they have helped clean up in the Discovery Center. Parents need to pick up their children’s belongings at the Discovery Center before the zoo opens. If you need to pick up your child earlier than this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW TONIGHT.
What is there is an emergency? Here is a number for emergencies—please understand, EMERGENCIES only (a forgotten toothbrush or pillow is not an emergency)! Call the zoo’s emergency pager , then leave the number where you may be reached.
What are the kids doing at the zoo? Getting a "behind-the-scenes" look at many of the exhibits, watching live animal programs, and taking an after-dark hike through the zoo.
Thanks for all your cooperation! Call me at school or home (420-3086) if you have further questions. I will be at the zoo by 5:30 P.M. on Friday.
FINALLY IF POSSIBLE, COULD SOMEONE BRING ALONG A CELLULAR PHONE IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES? WE WOULD APPRECIATE THIS!
