Earliest person I have is Patrick Gatens. He came to America around 1882. This surname is of Scotch/Irish origin. My Uncle Joe said that they left Ireland for Scotland during the potato famine. I don't have very much information on Patrick Gatens, as to who his parents were, or those of his wife Jane Elizabeth Fisher. It has been said that they came to America to marry in a Catholic Church in New York City in 1882, because of religious differences in their families.
Patrick was born in McGilden Scotland. (Spelling of this town could be different)
Jane was from Whitney Bay, England also have been told that it could be Spinnamore England. She served as cook on board her brother's (British) ship of which he was the captain, and sailed five times across the Atlantic. I believe her brother's name was John a.k.a. Jack.
.
Patrick (b.3/6/1837 d.6/19/1896) married Jane Elizabeth Fisher (b. 1/2/1861 d. 10/31/1952). They had six children born between 1885 and 1897.
Patrick had two brothers William and Neil. I don't have any information on the brothers at this time. Patrick worked for the Morris Creek Mining Company in or around Montgomery W VA until his death in 1896.
- Sarah Ann (b.June 5, 1886 - d. 1/15/1975) married Henry Ashby Dickerson. They had nine Children
- Susan (b.May 15,1892 d. abt 1968) never married
- James (b.Nov. 28,1887)
- Corneilis (b.May 5,1889 d. July 7,1890)
- John M. (b.June 18,1894) Looking for information on John, at the time of Jane's death he was one of the surviving children. He was from Handley, W VA?
- Joseph P. (b.Jan.6,1987 d. in 1942) at the age of 45, (he was from Montgomery, WVA.) He worked for the Chessapeak & Ohio R R as a brakeman,in the yards at Russell,KY. Died in the C&O Hospital at Huntington. (copied from his Obit)
- Mary (b. May 8,1885 d. Nov.27,1888) after her nightgown caught on fire.
Jane's parents were: John and Sarah (Patterson) Fisher, who came to America in 1882 and settled in Kanawha Co, W VA, where he worked in the coal mines.(copied from Jane's Obit)
I am looking for her siblings:
One of Jane's brother was John "Jack" Fisher at one time held land in Canada for 8 1/2 yrs before coming to W VA where he worked for the WPA. Born in 1871 and died Jan.21,1941 at the age of 70, at his home in Fairmont,WVA. He is buried at Montgomery Memorial Park in London, WVA.
Her other brother was James Fisher, according to Jane's Obit. he was living in Northumberland, England in 1952.
