I am the 13th Santa. Although my birth
name is Thomas, most who like and love me call me BJ. BJ is the name I
prefer to use, for it came from the hearts of my friends. My official title
to the Little People is Santa BJ. Santa Gray is used when formal occasions
arise.
I was born on December 7th 1951 in Colorado
U.S.A. I was coronated in the summer of 1981. My heritage is of English,
German, French Canadian, Polish, Irish, and Pawnee origins. My wife is
named Hope Hummingbird. She is of Navajo (Denih), Spanish, and Aztec heritage.
During my reign we have had two sons, Sage
Ian Natahan, and Winter Nicholas. We are the first to have children during
ones reign as Santa. Because they are the first offspring of a Santa, I
am not sure what their future will be like with me as their father. It
could be their wildest dream come true or their worst nightmare. All ready
life for them is anything but normal. Making gifts, tending reindeer, and
running errands for the Little People is not what one would consider a
regular childhood. Although they both seem to enjoy it very much, they
do have a problem trying to convince their human friends that this is really
their lifestyle. It gets interesting, to say the least, when their class
at school is discussing parents occupations.
Do to my travels for the Little people, we
spend a great deal of time living in a tipi. We have living quarters at
our disposal with the Vendigum and several places with humans in their
homes. We have always kept a residence in Colorado. For several years it
was in Denver, but in 1994 we moved our residence to the area around Granby
Colorado.
Hope is a person who is loved by all. She has
taken a very active role in child development. This is a quest for both
of us. We usually drop everything to attend to the education and developmental
needs of the children around us.
One of our goals during our reign is to resume
the ambassador role of Santa as to restore the belief in Santa and the
Little People that was lost during Dubouises absence as Ambassador. This
is important to Hope also. Until we had children she would accompany me
regularly during visiting season.
To help this cause, I am trying to get at least one of the reindeer
used to being around humans. It is my hopes that he will be able to accompany
me during my visits. For this reason I am moving Comet to Grand County
to live with us.
THERE ARE MANY IDEAS WE HAVE TO TRY AND IMPROVE
THE ROLE OF SANTA AND THE HUMANS PERSPECTIVE OF HIM. WE HAVE ALREADY CAUSED
OUR FIRST POLICY CHANGE. HOPE'S BIRTHDAY IS JANUARY 6TH. IN HER HONOR THE
LITTLE PEOPLE HAVE EXTENDED SEASONS GREETINGS TO 13 DAYS TO INCLUDE HER
BIRTHDAY.
ALSO MORE AND MORE LITTLE PEOPLES HOMES ARE BEING DECORATED WITH
HUMMINGBIRDS.
ANOTHER CHANGE SHE HAS BROUGHT ON IS NOW INDIAN FRY BREAD IS RAPIDLY
BECOMING A MAINSTAY IN THE LITTLE PEOPLES DIET.
THE REST OF OUR LEGACY IS YET TO BECOME HISTORY
BUT THE IMPORTANT PART OF THIS WORK IS TO LET THE PAST HISTORY OUT OF THE
BAG.
THIS I HOPE WILL RESTORE HUMAN BELIEF THROUGH THE FACTS OBTAINED BY
THE LITTLE PEOPLES ORAL HISTORY.
THE STORIES AND FABLES ARE FUN AND BASED ON
GREAT IMAGINATIONS. THEY HAVE THEIR PLACE BUT SO DO THE FACTS.
BESIDES, SANTA is the PLACE WHERE IMAGINATION AND REALITY MEET.
