Sherry's Polio Page
Everyone one knows about polio, we make sure our children are protected against it as infants. We all know what can happen if
they are not protected. Some of us remember the polio epidemics of the late 40's and early 50's because we were a part of them
and some of us were it's victims. We "caught" the polio virus
and we survived, we worked long and hard to build up the muscles
that polio had been made so weak that they were useless. Many of us and our parents were told we would never walk again, but we proved them wrong through hours of exercise and therapy but now
many of us are finding that we must start the battle again, as more and more of us are being diagnosed with Post Polio Syndrome. The disease has not returned but it's effects have
come back to haunt us. Muscles that have been overworked for many years are beginning to weaken and fail us, the muscles that
did not seem to be affected by the original polio are giving out from being overworked. We are finding ourselves back in the leg
braces and using the crutches that we threw out years ago. Many
of us are having to rely on wheelchairs and electric scooters to
get around our homes and do our shopping, because we just do not
have the strength and stamina to continue with our normal day to
day living without this help. We are having to "re-invent" our daily lives to accomodate these new problems.
