Freedom Fest - Great Cardboard Boat Regatta |
Robbins Lake, Cedar Rapids, IA |
Class I watercraft |
4th overall |
Phil Burian asked me to join his 4 man regatta crew. We won our first heat, putting up the 4th best time overall. In the semi-finals we were rammed in the first turn, but were able to recover to put up the 4th best time of the semis. In the final, again we were rammed in the first turn (by the same yellow boat) and spun completely around. We made a valliant charge and closed on the yellow boat but couldn't quite catch them before the finish line. It was a hot and sunny day. Overall the experience was definately good. Our boat was named the "Blue Splat" and we were dubbed "Some guys in ugly hats." Saw the Schlegels at the race, Scott had designed a LARGE cardboard USS Iowa battleship, which would have qualified for the semis, but it became waterlogged and they couldn't get it out of the water. |

6th overall |
Phil Burian asked me to join his regatta crew again. This time we were a six man crew on a catamaran style canoe. In our first heat we finished 3rd out of 3, but the other 2 boats were in the final, so we were definitely in a fast heat. In the second heat we rammed a boat in turn 1 and lost a lot of valuable time. We ended up with the 6th best time overall in round 2, but only the top 4 made the final. Our theme this year was "Middle-aged, Mutant, Ninja Turtles" and we were a crowd favorite. The families on shore (led by their kids, and none of whom we knew) started chanting "Tur-tles! Tur-tles!" before our second run. The temperature wasn't too bad as the sun kept disappearring behind the clouds all day. |

5th overall |
Once again a member of Phil's crew. We were in a 6 man canoe-ish boat. In round 1 we had the 4th fastest time (1m31s). In round 2 we had a little rudder trouble coming out of the last turn and finished with the 5th fastest time (1m40s [4th was 1m37s]). Unfortunately only the top 3 made the final. This year we were sumo wrestlers. All the girls were dressed in geisha robes. Decent temp and little sun until late in the day. |
