Fifth Season 8k |
Excellent food after the race. Start wasn't too bad, the crowd opened up after 1-2 minutes. Not too hot of a morning. Knees ached a little due to running the entire race on pavement. |

Bix 7 |
Horrible start to the race, I was toe to heel with other runners for the first 3 miles. Still fairly crowded throughout most of race. Horrible food after the race, the worst I've seen! Bill also ran this race. C&M(2) cheered from the roadside. |
|
9/6/2003 |
Swamp Fox |
Fun race with a small crowd. The start was great, with the crowd spreading out within 10 - 20 seconds. My first medal since high school! C&M(2) cheered from the park. |
|

Miracles in Motion |
Very small crowd, which allowed for a 4th place overall finish. A definite ego booster! Very well organized run, in fact the door prizes were drawn for while the runners were on the course. This was a charity fundraiser so no official prizes for finish. C cheered from the parking lot. |

Return of the Turkey Trot |
Overall a fun race, even though they (somehow) failed to record my finish. I was officially given a 'No time' in the standings. I guess even though I was the only one in line at the time I turned in my tongue depressor, the fact that I won a door prize distracted the table worker and she neglected to record my finish (75th overall). Door prize was a $10 gift cert to Play It Again Sports. C&M(2) cheered from along the course and at the park. |

February Freeze Fest |
Rain and snow the night before made this course slick in many spots. Not too cold of a run considering the time of year (~20's). Uncle Nick was at this race. Also saw Joel. Won a 6 pack cooler as a door prize. The shirt looks cool, grey with 3/4 length red sleeves. Got my second medal since HS. |
|
5/2/2004 |
Mall to Mall |
Time prediction race. Winner is the person who finishes closest to their predicted time (no watches allowed on course, of course). Cool morning (~40F) and sunny. Course was from Lindale mall to Westdale mall. I only had to stop and wait at one stop sign, the rest of the way the lights and traffic were with me. Joel ran this race as well, I finally caught up with and passed him in downtown CR. Decent food afterwards. Not sure that this was a full 9.2 mi. The results imply a distance of 8.75 mi, as they have me with an overall time of 1h03m01s and a pace of 7m12s. The pace sounds more in line with my ability than sub-7's over 9.2 mi. |

Marion Arts Festival |
Race accompanying the Arts Fest. Pleasant morning w/lots of sun. Hoping to place in my age group, but there were many good runners at this race. Chip timed race, splits: 6m02s, 6m59s, 6m35s (1.1mi); pace was 6m18s. Best 5k time I've ran since HS. I started off way too fast, and it shows in my 2nd mile split. Decent food afterwards. C&M(2) cheered from along the course and at the park. Uncle Nick was at the race, but didn't run (volunteer?). |

Fifth Season 8k |
2nd year in a row I've run this race. Still a fun race even for the crowd size. There were 929 total runners in the 8k; there were also 5k runners and walkers that added to the crowd. Again, excellent food afterwards; I had a banana, mini-muffin, a couple of cookies and a bomb pop. Start was a little crowded, it took me ~20 secs to get to the start line and a minute or two of running before the crowd opened up, but it wasn't too bad. Great weather, ~65F and sunny. Not too humid or windy. I saw Tonya (old co-worker), Uncle Nick, Jim and Joel all at the race. I finally beat Uncle Nick in a road race, though he did run an 8k 'warm-up' just before the race. |

Swamp Fox |
2nd year in a row I've run this race. Cool, sunny morning. I must be in a very competitive age group, I finished 6th overall and only got 3rd in my age group! Started too fast, I put up a 5m49s 1st mile! Decent food afterwards, especially for the small size of the race. I had a banana and some cookies. C&M(2) cheered from along the course and at the park. Saw Ed S. at the race. Third medal since HS. |

Miracles in Motion |
2nd year in a row I've run this race. Chilly, sunny morning. Finished 1st overall! Surprising considering I put in a slow time, though the small field helped. I was on vaca the 10/19 to 10/25 and didn't run at all that week, plus the next week I hardly ran at all between a bad cold/flu, the knee pain (ITBS) and the foot pain I was experiencing. I need to get healthy and back into shape before I try to do the Turkey Trot. Granola bar and water after the race, but for a charity road race I really didn't expect (or want) much more than that. Won a $20 Running Wild gift certificate as a door prize, will turn that into a new set of light running tights. |

2/26/2005 |
February Freeze Fest |
2nd year in a row I've run this race. Chilly, sunny morning. Finished 8th overall! Though frustrated as I only got 3rd in my age group. Not that I'm not happy with 3rd, but I had hoped that the improvement of 4 overall spots along with the improvement of over 4 minutes would translate into 2nd (or even 1st) in my age group. Oh well. Best time for a 5k since high school. Decent food after (banana, sweet bread, gatoraid), especially for a smaller race. Fourth medal since HS. |
|
4/23/2005 |
APDA Fun Walk and Run |
Sunny, but cold and very windy. This was a fundraising race for the American Parkinson Disease Association. Finished 2nd overall even though I didn't put up a great time. There were maybe 50-60 runners. I wasn't anywhere near the 1st place guy, nor was 3rd place anywhere near me. C, M(1), and M(2) watched from the side. Dad, Joyce, and Rob did the 1.5 mile walk. Dad won free tanning and a candle, I won two car washes in the door prize drawings. Fun race other than the weather. Fifth medal since HS. |
5/21/2005 |
Marion Arts Festival |
2nd year in a row I've run this race. Sunny (mostly) and pleasant. Good size field, there were 389 preregistered. I felt a little slow during this race and had very little kick at the end. Finished 2 seconds away from the last medal in my age group! Gun time (GT) was 19m01s; Chip time (CT) was 18m59s. Splits: 6m05s, 6m17s, 6m40s (1.1); Pace: 6m08s. I shouldn't be too disappointed as this was my second fastest 5k since I restarted running. I'm also wondering if the Freeze Fest wasn't a little short? Decent food afterwards. C, M(1), and M(2) cheered me on from home and at the finish. Saw Scott S. (Jane's husband) at the race. |
7/4/2005 |
Fifth Season 8k |
3rd year in a row, and 4th year total, that I've run this race. Overcast day, started sprinkling during the last mile, raining shortly after I finished, and downpouring shortly after that. It rained so hard and so long (over 1.5 hours of steady to torrential rainfall) that the awards ceremony was cancelled. I earned the 7th place medal in the M30-34 age group, meeting one of my goals of medalling in the Fifth Season 8k. Maybe my next goal will be to finish in the top 5 in my age group. Cool looking, and heavy, medal by the way. I saw Joel before the start of the race, he and his wife ran it. I saw Jim, his wife, and their kids after the race. I'm sure the food would have been great as usual, but I only had a chance to grab water, gatorade, and a banana during the rain. |
9/10/2005 |
Swamp Fox |
3rd year in a row I've run this race. Sunny, warm, and humid morning. This year they reversed the course (ran it clockwise) so C, M, and M came to the start instead of watching me from home. Definately ran too fast the first mile. I felt great during it but died in the last 1.5 miles. Splits were: 5m30s (mile 1), 12m00s (mile 2), 19m10s (finish). Finished 7th oveall and 2nd in my age group. Decent food afterwards. Hung around for the parade after the awards. |
10/9/2005 |
Miracles in Motion |
3rd year in a row I've run this race. Overcast, breezy, and chilly. This year they moved the course to Prairie High School. Probably started a little fast, but was trying to keep up with the guy who won the race. By 1/2 mile into the race I was on an island in 2nd place. Time was OK, especially since I didn't have any competitors near me to speed me up. Won a $50 gift certificate to Running Wild for finishing 2nd place overall. Bottled water, banana, and a granola bar after the race. Keeping in mind this was a charity event, that was more than acceptable post race food. |
11/12/2005 |
Return of the Turkey Trot |
2nd year I've run this race. Missed last year due to ITBS in rt knee. Nice temp and sunny. A little breezy when heading south. Finished 2nd in my age group, good enough for a medal and a pumpkin pie. Put up a time of 31m37s! Much better than I had hoped and even a PR! Saw Josh from work after the race. C and M2 cheered from near home and at the finish. |
2/5/2006 |
Winter Iowa Games |
First time I've competed in the Iowa Games. Though it was sunny, it was Cold and Windy. Finally a 5k course that was hilly! Finished 9th over all and got a silver medal in my age group. Put up a time of 19m50s, not too bad considering the temperature, the biting wind, the hills, and my sporadic training. |
2/25/2006 |
February Freeze Fest |
Third year in a row for this event. Finished 1st in my age group, and garnered my first gold medal; finished 12th overall. Still think this course might be a little short as I put up a time of 18m55s, almost a minute better than the Iowa games 20 days before. Cool and breezy with plenty of sunshine. Saw Ron G. (from APAC) and Joel. Finished ahead of A.K. for the first time! |
4/22/2006 |
APDA Fun Walk and Run |
2nd year this race has been run, and my 2nd straight - 2nd place finish. Josh (from work) placed 3rd. 19m33s is about where I expected to finish. Nice pleasant day, a little cool but much better than last year. Dad, Joyce, Rob, Tina, C, M1 and M2 all did the walk portion. I won a $25 gift cert to Running Wild (door prize). |
5/20/2006 |
Marion Arts Festival |
3rd year in a row I've run this race. Sunny and pleasant. Good size field, there were ~620 registered. Gun time (GT) was 19m04s; Chip time (CT) was also 19m04s. Splits were goofed up by the organizers; Pace: 6m10s. Finished 21st overall, and 1st in my age group. The awards were kind of crappy though, they gave me a ceramic disk (coaster?) with no division or place info on it. C, M(1), and M(2) cheered me on from home and at the finish. Saw Jeremy, Miss Terry, Rick (Mr. Terry), and our Zoey's waitress. I won a long sleeve, navy, Brooks running shirt as a door prize. |
7/4/2006 |
Fifth Season 8k |
4th year in a row, and 5th year total, that I've run this race. Record field today as there were over 2000 participants, 2050 I think was the announcement. It was definitely a competitive field, as I ran 50 seconds faster than last year, but only finished 14th in my age group this year. Plus I ran the first mile too fast, 5m50s. Miles 3 and 4 were tough, mile 5 was a little better. But it was a nice, pleasant, sunny day this year. Standard Fifth season fare after the race: banana, mini-muffin, bomb pop, etc. Saw Miss Teri, Rick (Mr. Teri), and our Zoey's waitress. C and M(2) went with me and cheered me on. Dad and Joyce said they were there, but with the crowd so large, we were unable to run into them. |
9/9/2006 |
Swamp Fox |
4th year in a row I've run this race. Finished 8th overall and 2nd in my age group. I was told by Dad that my time was 19m15s, but I was too busy holding off a late charge from 9th place to watch the finish clock. My splits were: 5m40s, 12m00s, and 19m15s; so I definitely slowed down as the race went on. It was a cool, overcast day, but decent weather for a race. I saw our Zoey's waitress and Rick (Mr. Teri) before the race. I saw them, Miss Teri, Director Dawn, and Miss Sara after the race. C, M(1), M(2), Dad, Joyce, Amanda, and Kayla (Amanda's sister) watched me finish. Had a banana, some animal crackers, and a couple of sandwich cookies post race. Overall I'm happy with the place and the time as I've felt a little slow and out of shape since my July stretch of easy running. |
10/22/2006 |
Miracles in Motion |
Finished in 22m20s and 3rd overall. I should/would have finished with a better time and place, except I made the mistake of following the 1st place runner off course. Though in our defense, the corner monitor was late getting out to her spot. A car came speeding up behind us and I heard a shout of "Turn around, you're going the wrong way!" Oh well, it is just a small charity race. The point is to have fun and help raise money. Plus I now have a great running story to tell. This was the 4th year in a row I've run this race, though only the second time they've been out at Prairie High School. I did endup winning a plastic, toy horse for 3rd (this is a horse related charity), so my daughter was happy with the result. It was cold and windy. Had water and a granola after the race, but I wasn't expecting much since it is a small race. |
11/18/2006 |
Return of the Turkey Trot |
3rd year I've run this race and 2nd year in a row. I also won 2nd in my age group for the second straight year. My time was 30m48s, but someone apparantly moved a cone as the first mile was short. My first mile split was ~5m15s, 30 to 40 seconds faster than it should have been. Had the course been correct, a time of 31m30s (or better) would have been a new PR. Oh well, it was a good race overall. Saw Rick and Terry, Josh, Ron G., Jeremy (and Jennifer). C, M(1), and M(2) cheered from near home and at the finish line. Dad and Joyce cheered from near their house. Won a silver medal and a pumpkin pie for placing 2nd in M30-34. Had water, gatorace, a banana, and a couple of vanilla HyVee cookies post race. My right foot was sore all day Saturday and Sunday, the chronic problem that I have. I think between the concrete course, my shoes being only EE (not EEEE), my shoes having a little bit less cushion than my trainers, and possibly lacing them up too tight contributed to the foot ache. |
2/4/2007 |
Winter Iowa Games |
Second year in a row I've run this race. I finished 8th (or 9th maybe) overall and 2nd in M30-34. This year was COLD, it was -11F air temp (not windchill) at the start of the race and when you'd run into the wind it was FRIGID! My time was a little off, 20 m18s, but not too bad considering the conditions. I saw Rick at the race, he finished not too far behind me. |
3/18/2007 |
February Freeze Fest |
Fourth year in a row I've run this race. I finished 12th overall and 3rd in M30-34. The race was originally scheduled for February 24th (as the name kind of implies), but due to the ice storms it was moved to March 18th. C and M(2) came along to watch and cheer. This was kind of a test race as this is the first race since my new workout routine. I've been logging fewer miles, but have incorporated swimming into the mix. My overall fitness level should be up, but I wasn't sure how the lower mileage would affect my times. But 19m21s is about average for me, and I think with some better mental toughness, I might be able to get into the 18s. Cold, sunny, breezy, but not nearly as bad as the Winter Games. Banana and a cookie for post race fare; I won a collapsable 6-pack type cooler as a door prize. |
4/21/2007 |
APDA Fun Walk and Run |
3rd year this race has been run, and my 3rd straight - 2nd place finish. Beautiful day for a run. Nice pleasant temps, sunny, though slightly breezy. Dad, Joyce, Marisa, Rob, Dawn, Bobby, Becky, C, M1 and M2 all did the walk portion. Considering that I'm only running twice a week now (with 2 swims added), I'm fairly happy with my time of 19m18s. |
5/21/2007 |
Marion Arts Festival |
Fourth year in a row running this race and my second straight age group award (third in M30-34 this time). Once again they gave out a crappy award, this year an ugly, tall, white ceramic mug with generic event info on it. And once again they hosed up the race timing. This year the clock at the finish was about 15 seconds ahead of the gun time, so I went from being ecstatic about besting the 19 minute mark and putting up a PR of 18m51s to being upset that my true time was 19m06s. Especially since I was coasting into the finish - basking in my below 19 minute time. URG! I would boycott this race, except it starts and finishes within 5 blocks of my house. Oh well. C, M(1), M(2), Dad, and Joyce cheered me on from the route, with C, M1, M2 also coming to the finish. We also saw Mrs. Terry, Mr. Terry (Rick), Mr. Terry Jr. (Blake), and our Zoey's waitress. The weather was nice - pleasant temps and sunny. |
7/4/2007 |
Fifth Season 8k |
5th year in a row, and 6th year total for this race. Another large field this year, 2300 is what I thought they announced. Warm, but not stiflingly hot day; sunny and slightly humid. I felt gassed the last two miles and that was where I dropped off my previous years paces. I finished in 33m50s, about two minutes slower than last year. Somehow I managed to finish in the medals, getting 10th in the M30-34 age group. Last year I finished 14th! Oh well, it is always about who shows up. I definitely think my low mileage this year has affected my 8k more than my 5k. Have to see about changing up my workouts to bring the 8k time back down. Ate a banana, bomb pop, and a mini-muffin after the race - then stopped by the Fleck area for a free beer. Saw Josh before the race and Joel afterwards. |
9/8/2007 |
Swamp Fox |
5th year in a row I've run this race. Finished 17th overall and 3rd in my age group. Finished in a disappointing 20m22s, but I suppose it can only be expected with how little running I've done. Felt good after 1 mile and into the second, but died in the last half mile. I was charged by a dog at about the 2.5 mile point, got a bit of an adrenaline rush and crash. C, M(1), and M(2) watched the start and finish. Banana and gatorade/water after the race. |
9/30/2007 |
Miracles in Motion |
Finished in 21m33s and 2nd overall. I should/would have finished with a better time, except I was just exiting the restroom when the race started. Though in my defense, the bathrooms had been locked until just before the race, and the pre-race announcement said to use the bathroom now if you wanted to go before the race. I just didn't expect them to ignore all the people who headed to the restroom. Oh well, like last year's snafu, one must remember that this is just a small charity race. The point is to have fun and help raise money. Plus I now have another great running story to tell. This was the 5th year in a row I've run this race. I did endup clawing my way into 2nd overall, not bad considering the head start most everyone else had and my mad sprint to get close enough to see the race leaders before I dropped into my pace. |
11/17/2007 |
Return of the Turkey Trot |
4th year I've run this race and 3rd year in a row. This year I finished 64th overall, and 3rd in my age group. My time was 34m43s, not too bad. I felt a little tired in the middle, but great on the last mile. I say Miss Christie, Melinda, Jeremy (and Jennifer). C, M(1), and M(2) cheered from near home and caught up with me after the finish line. Dad and Joyce cheered from near their house. Won a bronze medal but didn't collect my pie. I didn't think I'd win an award, and M(1) had to get to dance that morning, so we booked out of there. My right foot was sore part of the day Saturday and all day Sunday - its my chronic problem. I think between the concrete course, my shoes being only EE (not EEEE), and my shoes having a little bit less cushion than my trainers, all contributed to the foot ache. |
1/27/2008 |
Winter Iowa Games |
Third year in a row I've run this race. I finished 17th overall and 2nd in M30-34. This year was cold, but not nearly as cold as last. My time was 21m07s, not great but good enough to beat Uncle Nick. |
2/23/2008 |
February Freeze Fest |
Fifth year in a row I've run this race. I finished 26th overall and 5th in M30-34 (my last race in this age group). The weather wasn't too bad, though the course was slick in spots. My time was 21m29s, not good enough for a medal. This was the first race for the CompleRacers (Sara, Ryan, and I). Also saw Rick and Miss Terry. C, M(1), and M(2) were along to watch. I did win a backpack as a door prize. Also, the shirts were a nice, technical fabric shirt. |
