Joseph M. Hansell
(H1) was born ?/??/1828 in Pennsylvania. He and Catherine ??? were married ?/??/1850, probably in Philadelphia, PA. She was born 1830 in Delaware. Around 1853, the Hansells were living near the corner of King1 and Cherry Sts. in Philadelphia. Joseph was a dyer by trade and Catherine was a dressmaker. Around 1858 Catherine was living on King Street and there was no mention of Joseph. In 1858, King St. became Kelton St. and Catherine continued to live there until 1865. Around 1877 she was living at 1609 N. 21st St., Philadelphia, PA and continued to do so until 1890.Joseph W. Hansell
(H1a) was born in 1851. From about 1872 to 1876 he lived at 1809 Bellevue St. in Philadelphia and worked at 730 Sansom Street, as a clerk and bookkeeper. Around 1877 he moved to 1609 N. 21st Street. About this time he and his brother began Joseph M. Hansell's Sons Printers2. Joseph lived at 2344 Master St. from 1882 to 1886 and then left Philadelphia. From about 1887 to 1915 he lived in Delanco, NJ.Franklin Joseph Hansell (H1b) was born 7/6/1853 at King St. in Philadelphia. [The Hansell-Faygandis (Fagrindus) Family]
NOTES
1=King St. was a road running between Broad and 15th Streets from Race to Cherry Sts. At one time it crossed over Quarry Street. In 1859 King St. became Kelton St. By 1950 or so Kelton St. had all but disappeared.
2=Joseph M. Hansell's Sons Printers - This family business flourished from 1877 into the 1920. They printed tags and specialty items by hand and by steampowered machines. They also manufactured envelopes. The business seemed to begin at 209 Market St. around 1880 moved to 413 & 415 S. 5th St. About this time these seemed to be another branch of the business located at 432 Toner or Torer St. Around 1885 the business moved to 243 N. 3rd St. and sometime between 1890 and 1896 it was moved to 211 & 213 Quarry St. (near Bread St.). The last documented references to the business was in 1915 when it's location was listed at the SW corner of Bread and Quarry Sts.
