Gustaf Melcher Gustafsson (G1d) was born 8/17/1870 in Odensvi . He reportedly left Sweden and arrived in Philadelphia in 1888. There is, however, a 1886 reference to a Gustaf Gustafson, who was a laboror living at 915 Percy St. in Philadelphia. By 1894 Gustaf was living at 910 Ogden St. He became an American citizen on 2/27/1894 and was sponsored by a man named Anders Wallgren. Anders was a tailor who lived and operated a tailorshop at 1423 S. 12th St. in South Philadelphia. This is probably where Gustav worked and learned his trade in making men's suits. By the middle of 1895 he was working as a tailor and lived at 1409 Percy Street. Upon arrival his name changed from Gustafsson to Gustafson. He began his American life in Philadelphia as a laborer and was living at 910 Ogden St. By 1892 he moved to 1538 Summer St. and then to 1407 S. Percy St. in 1893.
