Fashion Dolls
When I started collecting dolls, I intended only to collect Revlon dolls by Ideal. I then branched out into Tammy by Ideal, when I saw all the wonderful outfits for her. Next thing you know, I bought a Penny Brite, then came a Jill I couldn't resist because she was a great buy. At a toy show I found a Jan in terrible shape, and needless to say I had to buy my namesake and fix her up. (She was a bargain too!) The rest of the collection came one by one as I saw dolls on web sites and at shows.
This page will display a number of different dolls, most of whom fall into the "fashion dolls" category because most of them have wardrobes -- outfits sold separately.
Hope you enjoy the collection!
Below is a vintage 1957 Blonde Jill dressed in her black velvet gown. It came with a pink satin stole and pink underwear. I have also included a closeup of her face. I prefer the Little Miss Revlon to Jill, but must admit she is a nicely manufactured doll and has an extensive wardrobe -- bigger than LMRevlon's.
I don't plan to amass a giant Jill/Jan collection, but there are a few outfits that I really like, and plan to buy them when they are not exorbitantly priced (like everything is getting to be!) Below is one of those outfits I found on ebay, listed in a strange category and consequently I got a good deal. It is Jill's Harem outfit, #3212 from 1959. I particularly liked the harem-hemmed skirt, and the great coral color.
Here's my 1962 VOGUE Jill (#60170) wearing her bridal gown.
Here's my namesake - Jan (1959) by VOGUE - wearing an untagged factory made raincoat that I think is adorable on her. Jan was introduced by Vogue as Jill's friend. This doll was a disaster when I found her at a toy show. I spent some time cleaning her and now she looks pretty spiffy! It shows that with a little hard work a doll that was considered "throw away" can be restored.
Here's some pictures of an 19" Dollikin. Dollikins are very interesting dolls with 16 joints, which make them ultra poseable. I have her dressed in an untagged factory made coat with replacement heels and tights, and in the jumpsuit that I purchased her wearing (I do not know if it is original). Her hair is in one of the original styles -- bun with a spit curl. If anyone has an original outfit for a Dollikin they would like to sell, please email me.
Here are a few more fun pictures of my Dollikin. I purchased the factory made untagged suit for my Revlon doll but it looks super on this fashionable lady.
Here is the 11 1/2 inch Dollikin mounted in her box from 1964. She has 14 body joints and is also very poseable. She came with dark brown hair and dressed in a variety of different colored jumpsuits.
I was real lucky and found the MIB Dollikin outfit pictured below. What's wonderful is that it shows on the back the other outfits available for her. This one is #1818 called Midnight Lace. It is a sheer lace long sleeved top with sheer bell-bottom pants. It comes with black panties and a hairband, but no black bra. A little risque because the top is see through!
Talk about luck - I found three more Dollikin outfits which are displayed below.
The first is #1810 called Great Lengths. It is a red velvet-like maxi-coat (don't you just love it!) with a red plastic hat, white scarf and white short boots. The second is #1813 called Pretty Pink. It is a pink and white mini dress with pink tights and white short boots and purse. The third is #1814 called Deep Purple. It is bell-bottom (!) purple print pants, a sheer purple blouse with a vest that matches the pants, and a white purse and green short boots. These outfits are so 70's. They are a historical representation of the fashions of the time!
Happily, I discovered a few more outfits at a Collectible show in San Francisco. The first is #1831 Snakes Alive and the second is #1819 Bride Time. I'm almost surprized that they made a Bride outfit for the Dollikin. Here they are:
Uneeda also sold a 6 1/2 inch Dollikin called Little Miss Dollikin. She is dated 1971. I have found her MIB and have a few pictures below. On the back of the box it states that they sold outfits for this size Dollikin. I haven't found any yet. I'll have to keep looking!
This is a UNEEDA TinyTeen Doll. She's very similar to Little Miss Revlon.
Below you'll find my Benny Brite Collection which is still growing. Penny is by DELUXE READING CORPORATION - TOPPER TOYS, and was made in the mid-1960's. I fell in love with her when I saw her wardrobe. She's 8 inches tall and comes in the little blue case illustrated with the booklet attached to the back. It shows all the clothes and toy accessories available. Her toy accessories include a kitchen-dinette, travel set (car), beauty parlor bedroom, and school room. I don't have any of the toys in my collection, yet! Enjoy her outfits that I do have pictured below.
Here's a composite of her in the blue case she came in, the booklet which was removed from the back of the case, her black carrying case, and another doll in the bridesmaid outfit.
This is "ANCHORS AWEIGH". She's missing her little red bag.
This is "FLOWER GIRL". She's missing her bouquet.
This is the outfit from "TRAVEL SET". Besides her car, she's missing a suitcase and hatbox, and little dog.
This is "SINGING in the RAIN".
This is Penny's "Kitchen Outfit." It came with her Kitchen accessorty set (which I don't have.) The dress is a red and white check with a white apron with two embroidered apples.
This is "WINTER PRINCESS". (MY favorite outfit - because is has to do with ice-skating.)
This is Penny's "Beauty Parlor Smock." It came with her Beauty Parlor Accessory Kit (which I don't have.) The smock just ties in the back and I suppose should really be worn over one of her regular outfits.
This is Penny's "School Outfit." It came with her School Room Accessory Kit (which I don't have.) It consists of a red long sleeve shirt and wool plaid skirt with suspenders. It is one of the harder items to find because the outfit was not sold separately, it only came with the school room set.
Penny's outfits came in two different packagings. The ones you see first, were the smaller version.
The first, #1715 - Velvet Princess, is a black velvet party dress with the traditional matching hair bow. The second, #1732 - Sunday Best, is a white cotton dress with blue check trim and matching panties and a cute wide brim hat.
Next you see the larger package with the clothing mounted on a card with an outer cardboard frame. The larger packaging also included a booklet of her outfits. The first is #1708 - Sweet Violet; the second is #1724 - Picnic Treat; the third is #1720 - SmartShopper; and the fourth is #1554 - Chit Chat; the fifth is "1759 - Sheer Delight; and the sixth is #1562 - Sun and Fun.
I have managed to find all the outfits and I have them pictured below.
Recently I found a MIB LongLocks -- one of Dawn's friends. I always find it interesting to have the boxes with dolls, especially when they display the various outfits on the back as this one does. This doll is in mint condition which is extremely hard to find because these dolls have a tendency to have their knees turn blue due to the wire inside to allow them to pose.
I came across the Golden Book about Mary, and the Disney record with the story book, at some doll shows I attended. I picked them up to add to my collection since they were reasonably priced.
