FELENG AND MOTHER'S PICTURE TAKEN January 16 Upon the first existence of small-sized pictures, they had their picture taken at Bert's Photo finishing. it took us the greatest difficulties of persuading her to have picture taken. We went from studio to studio still she refuses to have picture taken. The same thing with Adeling. They are ashamed to face persons. We bought Feleng a fan still she didin't like too. But at last she was persuaded as her mother held her and they are both taken. Feleng is wearing a Filipina dress. ADELING HAD MEASLES AND FEVER February 1 They are all in the province due to the baptism of Cong Digno's daughter, Eling. Adeling had fever, measles and cold. We could not get away from her and she always cry. When she became little bit well, we went home in the city. In the train, she had a high fever and she always like to drink water. A few days later, she became well already.
OUR THIRD CHILD, ERNING (Ernesto Angeles)
September 26, 1935, Thursday Morning at 3:15 a.m. At about midnight, Dearie begins to feel pains in her abdomen and in the groins. As they grew painful and continuous, she could not sleep. First, I let her drink soda water mixed with one fresh egg in order to distinguish such pains from those caused by colic. Yet it did not stop. So I already prepared hot water and called for the midwife, Aling Titang at Economia Street. Although she is already sleeping she woke up and went with me including her assistant. But Dearie was not yet to deliver so it took them more than three hours to attend her. In all, Dearie drank six fresh eggs to have more energy during her delivery. Now the pains grew more severe and they occur at intervals. When I beg "maman" for the midwives from grandma, it rained. As it stops, Uncle Ering came and helped us. Brods and Gundo are also present. The midwives and Uncle say that when the pulse jumps over the finger tips, she is sure to deliver. So at about three o'clock, the midwife got as much as newspapers as she ould get and placed them under Dearie's buttocks to prevent soiling the mat. Then she took pills to expel the "sumilim" which is the main cause of severe pains. As she was fond of lying down on the floor without mat during her pregnancy, so she felt a very painful delivery unlike before. Yet I have been persistent praying for their safety. And as the "panubigan" exploded, then she delivered. And Lo! It is a boy! We became happy and thanks God she passed all those hardships. The midwife did not bathe him anymore as he has cold. She just wiped him with cotton. As we have no money, so we just paid 50 centavos as advance payment to Aling Titang. In all we spent 10 pesos. Six pesos to aling Titang and 4 pesos to Aling Isabel, the one who took care of her in her confinement. I took three days accrued leave and some more later. For one week, I washed the clothes then Itang took care of it during October for 3 pesos. Dearie closed on Oct. 16 which is Wednesday and I took two days accrued leave. ERNING RECOGNIZES WHITE OBJECTS October 26, 1935 He begins to recognize white objects and distinguish the presence of someone by sound. If I speak approaching him he stops crying. Then if I move to different positions near him, he follows me and turns his head toward me. And if I hold his hands he lifts his head for he wanted to be carried upon. He even kicks hard against my palms when I hold his feet. During this one month, he seldom cries but frequently urinates and moves his bowels. ERNING LEARNS TO LAUGH November 12, Tuesday At exactly one month and a half, Erning begins to smile whenever teased. He has skin eruptions somewhat "tubig-tubigan" and also cough. During the Innauguration of the Philippine Commonwealth which is Nov. 15th, he was able to laugh louder with us. He is very peaceful and seldom cries. He cries when he is very impatient of lying down and sees nobody with him. BAPTISM OF ERNING December 1, Sunday The baptism of Erning took place this day in the Sampaloc Church with Brods Isco as the sponsor. Mother-in-law, cong digno and Edong came to share with our happiness. We have a small preparation costing around 10 pesos. The affair lasted until 3:00 in the afternoon for although it was just a small "salo-salo" we have many visitors mostly our neighbors and relatives. It so happened that after going to church, I received a note from the Chief Clerk requesting my presence in the Director's office for overtime work due to the bunch of mails dispatched by hte China Clipper, which arrived on November 29, 1935 and left Dec.2, 1935. After going with them to the church at 10:30, I proceeded to the office by calesa. We worked until one o'clock the next morning and ate in the Boston restaurant. Some of the regalos are:
