THE ACQUAINTANCESHIP
1927
It was in May when the petals of blooming flowers are all
moist with dew and the atmosphere is filled with fragrance
and sweetness. There--in a humble home which I frequently
visited, lives a fair maiden of sweet sixteen whose name I
never knew. For many times I used to catch frogs in her
yard, buy pieces of bread in her store and often see this
fair maiden but never did I mind her at all.
Then one day, I was fetching water from an artesian by her
home, and she was then coming from the market with a small
basket on her head. Suddenly, I heard a loud voice followed
by unwholesome words from the lips of her guardian (aunt).
She tried to scold and blame her for spilling the bottle of
KETSAP over the basket full of fresh rice. Oh! I could not
help but pity her for such punishment she received. I knew
she was yet too young to be very precautious for this
mishaps.
Then June came and I have often escorted her on way to
school. I did not know why we have always meet each other.
She was a six grader and I was a Senior in high school. Oh
what a nice schooling for me to be with somebody! Many
times we used to converse about our studies. And on August
24, I gave her one of our pictures taken during our picnic
in Taldawa. Oh she liked it very much that she also
bestowed me one of hers in her class. She was giving it
without any dedication at all but I refused to accept it.
then she brought it home and the next morning, she gave it
with a nice dedication. Oh how sweet such a dedication. I
cherished and embraced it so dearly in my heart for it is
the only precious thing on earth for me.
