Using a Side Border Graphic and Tables

Using a simple table will keep your text from running all the way across someone's 1024 x 768 screen. This text is in a 400 width table. I could also set it to any width that I desired.

There normally wouldn't be a border showing around the text. I left it here so you could see what I have done.

This text is in a 450 width table. I try to design my pages to work on a 640 x 480 resolution to keep people from having to scroll side ways to view my site. I like the look of side borders and usually make them 125 - 150 wide. Still working with a 640 subtracting 150 gives you 490 for text. Don't forget the scroll bar on your browsers right side. Subtract about 10 from your text border for this.
Tips:
You could also center your text table. Then someone using a larger resolution won't have all that empty space on the right side.
If your border graphic is 150 wide make the spacer gif 160 to keep your table from butting right up to your border.
Since my screen is so big I have a single picture on my desktop that is 640 x 480. I use this to adjust my browser window to the correct size.

This table is centered and 450 wide. Feel free to look at my source code to see the tables. I have tried to set it up with plenty of information.

This example is for a 800 x 600 screen. 800-150 = 650. Subtract another 10-20 for scroll bar. Text table width is 630. If you have your resolution set to 640 x 480 you should have to scroll to read this.
