The Tullis Family



Tullis is of Scottish or Irish extraction and means small hill.

JAMES MONROE TULLIS was born about 1824 in South Carolina and died before 1880 in Alabama.
James was a blacksmith. Also in the household in the 1850 census is Jacob Gunter age 33, clerk, b. SC; in the 1860 census is Nancy A.L. Davis age 16 b. GA.
James served in the War between the States as a Pvt. in Co K, 33rd Ala Infantry. He enlisted March 13, 1862 in Greenville, AL, but spent much of the war in the hospital. By the end of the war, he is listed as a 2nd Corporal in Captain Horn's Co.

James married Nicey Gunter, possibly the daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Gunter. She was born about 1835 in Georgia. Nicey was living in 1880 with her son Ruff (James R.). Nicey was living in 1910 with her son-in-law James Baston. She is said to have lived to be 103 years old.

2. JAMES RUFFIN TULLIS (James1) son of James M. Tullis and Nicey Gunter was born Feb 1859. The 1880 census says he was born in Georgia, but the 1860 and 1900 census say he was born in Alabama. In 1880, there is a Jim Tullis, b. 1877 FL, in the household. He is listed as a nephew of James, but it is not known who his parents were.

James (or Ruff) married Jeanette G. "Nettie" Davis, daughter of Caroline Davis. Nettie was born Nov 1868 in Alabama.

4. MARTHA CATHERINE TULLIS (James4, Moses3, Moses2, Moses1) daughter of James M. Tullis and Nicey Gunter. She was born in Dec 1863 in Alabama.

Martha married JAMES TROUP BASTON. He was born May 1863 in Florida, died 8 Apr 1912, and is buried in Sardis Methodist Church Cemetery in Coffee Co., Alabama. Both his parents were born in Georgia. In 1910, his mother-in-law, Nicey Tullis was living with him.
