January 1914, Parkhill Gazette... newspaper clipping.....
James William McPherson, 44 years old and his son Rufus, 9, lost their lives Tuesday evening in a fire which burned their home on Section 5 Wisner Township near Akron, Michigan. Mr. McPherson with his wife and seven children occupied a frame one story dwelling on their forty acre farm one mile north of Sharpville.
The house was made of pine boards on the outside, sheathed with pine inside and papered with tarred paper and was not plastered, having nothing whatever to resist fire but rather furnishing the best conditions for quick destruction.
At 8 o'clock Tuesday evening the mother was in the kitchen while all the others were gathered in the dining room. Mr. McPherson was slightly deaf, but thinking he heard a roaring sound, went to the door opening into the living room and throwing it wide, was met by a sheet of flames which swept entirely over the dining room dividing the family. The parents, Cyrus, Cecil and Arthur were on the west side. Alice, Bessie, Benjamin and Rufus were on the east side. Alice and Bessie ran out of the front door which in the excitment was closed. Benjamin tried to open it but could not and said, "Ruffie, we must run through the fire to the other door." He made the rush supposing his younger brother Rufus followed, but heard him say, "oh, I can't".
Mr. McPherson went twice
around the house to see if all had escaped and missing Rufus asked for
him. Mrs. McPherson said, "My God, Will, he must be inside." She
started to enter the house but her husband pulled her away and went in
himself soon coming out for air. He entered again and again came out with
clothing ablaze and plunged into a snow bank to put out the fire.
By this time two neighbours, George Sharpe and Will Hill had arrived, but
could do nothing and were amazed when Mr. McPherson
suddenly arose and made
a dash for the burning building, entered and was seen no more.
After the fire burned low, the body of the father was seen by the outside kitchen door and that of little Rufus close to the front door of the living room.
In his rush through the flames Benjamin was badly burned, his whole left side being blistered and --- a strange circumstance --- hiss right ear badly blistered, probably while he was trying to open the front door.
Tragedy exited the keenest sympathy throughout that section of the country. Mr. Mc Pherson was a man of powerful build who came from Canada when a small boy and before engaging in farming, had operated a saw mill.
July 13, 1897 he married Mrs. Harriet Theum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cosens of the same neighbourhood and they had lived seventeen years on the place. No insurance was carried on the house or contents --- a total loss. But Mr. McPherson carried $1,000.00 on his life in the Gleaners. The barn caught fire several times, but the neighbours suceeded in saving it.
Mrs. Charlotte McPherson of Caro is his mother. He leaves three brothers. John F. of Montana, George R. of Akron and Orval E. of Caro. Four sisters also survive. Mesdames H.L.Black, Unionville. Wm. J. Portlo, Jesse O'Dell, Akron and Edward McKinley, Caro.
Mrs. McPherson and surviving children are with her parents and the bodies were taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. Jesse O'Dell where funerals were held Friday afternoon January 16th, 1914 after which the bodies of father and son in a single casket were buried in Wisner Cemetary.
Mrs. McPherson is a neice of Mrs. Charles Poore Townline McGillivray and Mrs McPherson has many relatives near Greenway.
