FRANCES EMMA "EM" MCPHERSON: She met Charles Grieve on his visit back to Canada in 1929. (He was a local boy who made good by means of inheriting his uncle's estate in Australia) He asked her to marry him three times before she accepted. They were married out west on August 20, 1929. Then he took her to Australia where he built her a new home. He died about 1940. She had the use of the house until she died or left Australia then it went to his children.

In the spring of 1940, Em had word that her mother was very ill so she left Melbourne to get a boat in Sydney but she missed the boat because her trunks and belongings were a week late arriving. The boat she missed sank when it hit a land mine. The second and last boat to leave Australia because of World War II stopped in New Zealand and picked up the survivors of the first boat, then headed for Canada. -- re Donna MacPherson Gray

Grieve Family History -- The story goes that a Mr C. Goodmaan, a lumber dealer from Hamilton, was in Parkhill and noticed a load of logs marked with the name "Charles Grieve". He stated that an ad had appeared in the Hamilton Globe seeking information on a Charles Grieve and asking that he contact Australia regarding his Uncle's estate.

When Charles received the message it is said that he was hoeing turnips, but he immediately threw down the hoe and headed for Australia. A particularly rough trip persuaded him to stay down under. The sheep business was good to him and he prospered. He married an English lady named Eliza Shannon of Moculta. They had two sons and two daughters. Charles and his son-in-law, Edward Dean, became involved in grape growing for the production of raisins. The raisins were sold under the brand name of Moray after the old Post Office in McGillivray. Eliza died in 1926. Charles returned to Canada about 1929. While visiting his sister Helen Tweddle, he met Emma McPherson. He proposed to her, but she refused. On his way back to Australia, he sent her a wire from Calgary asking her to meet him in Vancouver, but she still refused. She later relented and he returned to meet her.

Following his death she returned to Canada and built a house beside the old Mollard homestead in Grand Bend.

July 10, 1902 Parkhill Gazette: A pleasing event which united the lives of Mr Fred Shetler of Buffalo, N.Y. and Miss Nelly McPherson, Eldest daughter of Edmund McPherson took place Wednesday June 25, at 3 pm in Grace Church which was prettily decorated with maple leaves, ferns and pink roses. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Berry and was witnessed by a large number of relatives and friends. The Bride was gowned in a dainty dress of white organdy and bridal veil and carried a bouquet of white carnations and ferns. She was assisted by two sisters, Emma and Bella. Emma wore a white organdy with rose chiffon as trimming and carried a bouquet of pink roses. Bella also wore white with pale blue taffeta as trimming and carried a bouquet of yellow roses. Little Adah made a very sweet maid of honour and carried a basket of roses. The groom was attended by his brother, A. Shetler of Dashwood. Mr. and Mrs. Shetler will reside in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
 
 

May 30, 1957 MRS. NELLIE SHETLER Parkhill Gazette

After a lengthy confinement in Deaconess Hospital due to a broken hip suffered in a fall last September, Nellie McPherson Shetler died at the home of her daughter on May 19th. She returned to her home the first of February where she was able to get about in a wheel chair. The sudden death of her husband later in February proved too great of a shock to her and she was forced to return to the hospital where she remained until the first of May, when she was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. (Frances) Miller, where she passed away. The immediate cause of death was hepatitis.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. Miller, two sisters, Mrs. James Wilson, Parkhill and Mrs. Elgin Webb, Grand Bend and one brother Robert McPherson of Buffalo, N.Y.

Rob learned beekeeping skills from his father, Edmund McPherson. In the woodshed/ workshop behind the old Mollard homestead in Grand Bend, Rob kept the netted bonnet and the little smoke pot which he used to control swarming bees. I (bd) once saw him stun a swarm with the smoke. He wore the netted bonnet, but he used his bare hands to scoop the bees into a container.

He was in a very serious car/train accident and walked with a limp, sometimes using a cane.

He worked as an electrican and moved where the work was. He may have gone to Timmins, Ontario twice -- riding the shirtails of the "Gold Rush". Rob is said to have worked on installing the electrical systems in the Timmon's mines. This must have been at a later time because here is a photo of Henrietta holding a gold brick.

MARRIED 50 YEARS: Golden wedding anniversary celebrations were held on the weekend for Mr. and-Mrs. Robert Macpherson, summer residents in Grand Bend.

Mr. MacPherson was born at Greenway. The couple was married at the bride's home in Buffalo, New York, where they have resided since that time. However they have spent their summers in the resort town In the home previously owned by Mr. MacPherson's father and before that, his grandmother. Mr. and Mrs. MacPherson have two daughters, Mrs. Dougal Gray, Parkhill, and Mrs. Irving Ryan, Buffalo; two sons, Robert MacPherson, Kenmore, New York, and Donald Macpherson, Buffalo; and seven grandchildren.

Special guests at a family dinner celebration at the Dominion Hotel in Zurich were the bridesmaid of 50 years ago, Mrs. Elgin Webb, sister of the groom, Grand Bend; groomsman Frederich Bull,brother of the bride, Lake Worth, Florida -- flower-girl Mrs. William Miller, niece of the groom, Hamburg, New York; and musician and soloist, Mrs. Emil Hirschberg, Buffalo.

Other guests included Jim Wilson, Parkhill; Mrs. Pollock, Kerwood; Elgin Webb Grand Bend; Mrs. Frederick Bull, Lake Worth, Florida; William Miller, Hamburg, N. Y; and Emil Hirschberg, Buffalo. On Sunday, friends, and acquaintances were invited to an Open House at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dougal Gray, Parkhill.

MacPHERSON -- In Buffalo, New York, Wednesday, August 15, 1973, David Robert MacPherson, beloved husband of Henrietta Bull. Dear father of Marie (Mrs. Irving Ryan); Robert E. MacPherson and Donald F. MacPherson, all of Buffalo and Donna (Mrs. Dougal Gray), Parkhill. Also surviving are seven grand children and one great grand-daughter. Age 82 years. Funeral service took place in Buffalo on Saturday, August 18.
