Source - Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, Vol. II, 1742-1775. Compiled by Gertrude E. Gray. John Lewis Friend Sr., who in 1764, a year after peace was formally established following Pontiac's uprising, left the Potomac River valley and hiked into the Alleghenay mountains, following the trail of a fur trader who followed a buffalo trace. After descending into the sole Indian village of the area, on the Youghiogheny. he bought land from the Indians, trading for several fields and primitive dwellings. He returned to the Potomac and a year later, in 1765, returned to settle on what is now known as Friendsville, Garrett Co. Maryland. John was soon joined by several brothers and other early settlers, and these early families' names can still be found among today's populace, such as Glotfelty, Broadwater, Wilt, Savage, Browning, Bittinger, Brenneman, Buckel, Beachy, Hershberger, Friend, of course, and others. "John Friend's tract (in 1774) was "Friend's Fortune". July 15, 1776, John Friend and his neighbors enrolled in the Washington County Militia, Skipton Company, at Cumberland MD. John Friend was allotted two military lots of 50 acres each as a settlre. On June 1, 1808, Old John transferred the deed for "Friend's Delight" to John Friend, Jr. This was Old John's last signature of record.".... Source - "Indian Blood", Evelyn Guard Olsen.
