Benjamin Hawkins Fitzgerald, born in 1761 in (Albemarle Co./Nelson Co. or Orange Co.?) Virginia.
Benjamin is thought to be the son of a John Joseph Fitzgerald who is said to have been born in Ireland about 1735 and died in 1824 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. John married Mary Hawkins Bartlett in 1753. Mary being the daughter of a Col. Benjamin Barlett and wife Mary Hawkins. Mary was the first of at least three wives for John Joseph Fitzgerald. She supposedly bore him three of his twenty one children.
These three children being:
(1) Bartlett Hawkins Fitzgerald, born in 1759. He married Mary Maskie Coleman, daughter of Elizabeth and James Jerry Coleman.
(2) Benjamin Hawkins Fitzgerald, born in 1761. He married Jane Coffey, the daughter of Elizabeth (Osborne) and William Coffey.
(3) Abigail Fitzgerald, born 1762. She married Samuel Sloan.
I have not been able to confirm the information about Benjamin's parents yet.
Revolutionary War records show that Benjamin joined the 7th Virginia Regiment in 1777 and mustered out in June of 1782. Both Benjamin and his brother Bartlett were awarded several bounty land warrants for their military service and both were excellent soldiers who served with Col. Washington.
For reasons as yet unknown, both Benjamin and Bartlett ceased to use their surname of Fitzgerald for a time as adults and went by the names of Benjamin and Bartlett Hawkins instead.
Our Fitzgerald line descends from Benjamin's son Edmund Coffey Fitzgerald by way of Edmund's son Wyatt Fitzgerald. Wyatt Fitzgerald was born in Nelson Co. VA in 1833, but he and his siblings settled in Upshur Co. West Virginia. Wyatt married Mary Marple and they had quite a large family.
One of their sons, my husband's grandfather, was Opha Burton Fitzgerald. He and his wife, Sarah Ellen Friend, raised a large family in Upshur Co. as well.
