Vital Records in Ireland

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths did not begin in Ireland until 1864. These records are kept at:

Fortunately, these records were not stored at "Four Courts"

In 1922 a fire at "Four Courts" in Dublin, Ireland destroyed almost all, hundreds of years worth, of the Wills and Protestant Church registers of baptism, marriage and burials for Ireland. Now, unless the local parish register is still surviving and did not send records to "Four Courts, or the family concerned were landowners, it is extremely difficult to trace Irish families before 1864 via these sort of records alone. The following sources may assist you: * The Registry of Deeds have all land transactions involving a deed back to 1708. * The Genealogical Office has extensive records of pedigrees, armoral bearings, Wills and genealogical materials dating back to the 1660s. * The Internet offers numerous Irish genealogy sites and forums where fellow Irish researches can interact and exchange data and resource information.
