Pace

Our line of Paces presented a number of "research dead-ends" at first because I thought my maternal grandmother's parents were James W. and Anna Rachel (Daugherty) Pace. I'd come across their marriage registration among records in Crawford Co., Iowa (where my grandmother had lived most of her adult life) and a relative was sure the names listed were those of Grandma's parents. However, I could find nothing on file to confirm this!
I finally got a couple of breaks in my research when I came into contact with several other people researching Pace families in Harrison and Crawford Co. Iowa:
Bob and Ginny Gray of Nevada and Chris Carr in Washington state. The Pace line had been traced back to a 1572 Richard Pace and his wife, 1576 Isabella Smyth, in Middlesex Co. England and the three had many records which they kindly shared copies of with me.
The summer of 1999, I got yet another break while doing research in Harrison Co. Iowa. I located records on several of my Grandma's siblings that identified their parents as Andrew Jackson Pace and Cora Ellen Fisher!
My oldest brother Dick McCoid and I also found Andrew and Cora (Fisher) Pace's gravesite in the Manteno Cemetery, near the long gone town of Manteno, in Shelby Co. Iowa, where my maternal grandfather's parents Elbridge Dow and Nancy Ann (Fouts) McCoid are buried.
After contacting Ginny Gray once again, I learned that Andrew Jackson Pace and James W. Pace are "1st cousins once removed". Andrew is the grandson of Elisha and Martha "Patsy" (Johnson) Pace, via their son John Andrew Pace, and James is their great-grandson via their son William Henry Pace (and grandson John Edward Andrew Pace).
Elisha and Martha "Patsy" (Johnson) Pace were both from Virgina and died in Fayette County, Ohio. Sons John and William were also born in Virginia, but finished out their lives in Iowa.
I hope to have a "Descendant List" for the Pace family posted here at the site soon.
