The Ulster New Zealand Trust, a registered charity, was established in 1988 to restore the birthplace at Glenavy of New Zealand Prime Minister, John Ballance (1839-93) who founded the Wanganui Herald before entering Parliament in 1875. Elected as Prime Minister in 1890, he launched major land reforms, paved the way for women's votes and introduced the world's first welfare state. His restored birthplace commemorates not only his life and achievements but is also a centre for promoting the historical, cultural and economic links between Ireland and New Zealand.
