The Ferry on the Cape Fear River between Moncure and the Harnett County line was operated by John Avent in February1779, approximately where State Highway 42 now crosses the Cape Fear River. It is of interest to note that the PEE Dee Trail from Virginia to South Carolina is shown as having crossed the Cape Fear near Avent's Ferry on Humber's map of the North Carolina Atlas.
Two Avent brothers, John and Joseph, and their sister, Sarah, who married William Ragland, settled near Buckhorn Falls on the Cape Fear River in 1765. John, who had large land holdings along the river, operated Avent's Ferry. John's only son, William, became a Methodist circuit rider at the age of 14. Three of the 12 children of William by his third wife, Esther Watts Clegg, also became Methodist ministers, the Rev Isaac Watts Avent being the one who remained in the state.
