History of the Second Prairie Creek Baptist Church

The church as it stood 1853-1928. The third building, as it stands now, may be seen here.

In August 1828 a band of people, seeing the need of a church, met at the home of E.P. Kester and after prayer, proceeded to choose William Stansel as moderator. At the same meeting B.I. Gunn was chosen clerk. On motion and second they found they were resolved to meet again at the home of E.P. Kester on Saturday before the second Lord's Day in October 1828, to organize a church.

The minutes of the organization are missing.

In December 1828 the church, being organized, resolved to hold their business meetings on the Saturday preceeding the first Sabbath Day of each month. These meetings were held at the homes of different members until a building could be erected.

In January 1829, Brother Abraham Stark was called as Pastor of the church. In the same month Thomas Pound, Joseph Pound, William Pound, Henry Shoemaker, and Ishmael Gunn were chosen as a committee to select a suitable place for a building in which to worship.

When the question of land arose, Mr. John Carr, being very much interested in the church, deeded to the organization the land upon which the church now stands and the cemetery.

The location of the first church building was back of the house which now stands. It was erected near the center of what is now the cemetery.

In May 1829 the plans for the first church were adopted. A house 25 feet by 35 feet, a pulpit in the side, a chimney on each side of the pulpit, one door in the side and a door in one end of the building. There were three windows.

Many meetings were held in this church. The people, being inspired by God, worked diligently to make their church a place of divine service.

In August 1829 the church resolved to join the Union Association.

In May 1830, the church worshipped in a three days' meeting.

In November 1836, Brother Stark finished his work as pastor of the Second Prairie Creek church, and was succeeded by Samuel H. Sparks.

During Brother Sparks' ministry, in this place, the church entertained her first association September 1836.

As years passed, the congregation of the church grew in numbers until it was necessary for the people to provide a better place in which to worship.

In October 1839 the first church building was repaired and remained fourteen years.

A lasting memory of the dear old church is still in the minds of Aunt Sarah Fisher, 90 years old [in 1928], and Uncle Alfred Boyll 86 years old [in 1928].

They seem to live again the joys that once were theirs so long ago, and God has given them the power to make these memories reappear;

For they can settle back and live again, the joys they knew,

And taste once more the old delights of days when all their skys were blue (see their picture here).

In the year 1840, Samuel H. Spark finished his ministry at this place, and William B. Eldridge was called to continue the work (see his picture here).

As time hastened on, this "Band of Christian Workers" grew stronger in Christian Faith and also, grew stronger financially. It was possible, at this time, for them to build a larger and more convenient house in which to worship (see picture, above).

In July 1853 the church, which stands today [in 1928], was erected.

There are only a few members living, who remember the first meeting held in this building.

From this time the church grew stronger. Although many problems had to be faced, the people were willing to bear the burdens.

January 1, 1870 David M. Nevins went to the Second Prairie Creek Church to assist Brother Frakes (picture) in a meeting. The meeting lasted seven days and nights, and was a benefit to the church but resulted in no additions to the church.

Brother Nevins commenced a meeting at this church February 6, 1870 which lasted for two weeks, day and night. This resulted in the church being revived and strengthened by the addition of twenty-five new members received into her fellowship. He was assisted by Brother J.M. Turner and Elder Frakes.

December 31, 1870 Brother Nevins accepted the pastoral care of this church for one year.

January 12, 1872 Brother Nevins and Brother Eldridge began a series of meetings at Second Prairie Creek which continued twelve days and nights. The meetings were very interesting, but closed without any additions to the membership.

Among the very faithful workers of those days were Uncle Phillip Randolph, who served as moderator for 13 years. J.R. Cupps who served for a period of 9 years, and Oliver Boyll who served as clerk for 8 years.

In the year 1890 the first Sunday School was organized, five pastors intervened between Brother Nevins and Brother George Fuson (picture) who was called to pastor in 1894. Brother Fuson has served as pastor of this church four different times. He spent twenty years in this church as pastor. During these twenty years of service, he did wonderful work for the church.

This church has entertained five Associations. The first in 1836, second in 1871, fourth in 1907, and the last Association held in this place was September 18th-19th, 1928. At this last Association the church was filled to capacity each session. The members of the church served at Tuesday's dinner 400 people and for the evening meal 100 people. Then for Wednesday dinner the church served 300 people. Everyone agreed that this was one of the best Currie's Prairie Associational meetings ever held, due to a very large degree to the leadership of moderator Rev. H.H. Drake of West Terre Haute.

The present membership of the church is 60 Resident members and 15 Non-Resident members.

We are beginning a series of Protracted meetings, immediately following the Centennial Anniversary Services, Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14th. This effort for the Lord's work will last two weeks.

We are praying that God's richest blessing will be showered upon us and that we, as members of this section of Christ church, will be used greatly in His services.
