Notes for CHARLES WESLEY BENIGHT:
Charles Wesley Benight was born on March 10, 1846, in Indiana. His parents were Guy R. Benight and Harriet May Smith Benight. He moved to Iowa with his parents when he was eight years old (1854). They settled where the present town of Waterloo is located. At age 18, while living at Waterloo, IA, Charles joined Company C of the 32nd Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. His military record: enlisted 23 Dec 1863; mustered 23 Dec 1863; transferred to Company H 8th Infantry 27 Jul 1865. (From obituary - he enlisted December 9, 1863, was a member of the 32nd Iowa Infantry, and saw service in the second brigade, third division, sixteenth Army Corps. He was honorably discharged December 29, 1865). On November 21, 1872, in Adams Co., IA, he married Matilda Jane Smith, daughter of Moses Smith and Rachel Ratcliff Smith. (Matilda was born on Jan. 15, 1856, in Adams Co., IA). He farmed, and they lived near Coming, IA, at Brooks in Adams County. Charles had diabetes. In 1905, they moved to Nebraska. He passed away in Juniata, Nebraska, on October 31, 1911, and is buried at the Oakdale Cemetery in Adams Co., IA - Block 6, Row 2. (Obituary says Quincy Cemetery). Matilda went blind in later years, and lived with her daughter, Charity Giles, in Hansen, NE. Matilda died on May 26, 1950, of chronic myocarditis with arteosclerosis. She was 94 years old.

3. CHARLES NAPP BENIGHT (JOSEPH A. BENNIGHT) was born November 10, 1809 in Chemung Co.?, NY, and died April 06, 1886. He married (1) ELIZA ANN JONES May 05, 1833 in Vigo County, IN. He married (2) LOUISA CALDWELL BIRCH July 10, 1853 in Clark Co., IL.

4. EDWIN PUTNAM BENIGHT (JOSEPH A. BENNIGHT) was born December 16, 1811 in New York, and died February 11, 1856. He married (1) ELLEN STRAIN June 10, 1841 in Vigo County, IN. He married (2) MARGARET ANN HILL June 20, 1849 in Vigo County, IN, daughter of REV. HILL and MARGARET CUNNINGHAM.
