During Spring Break 1999, my wife, my son, and I rented a van and took a tour through NC and KY, re-tracing the trail followed by Thomas Bastin, Jr. and his family in their move from Caswell County, NC to South Central Kentucky in 1830. The following photographs are from our day in Yanceyville, Caswell County, NC, March 29, 1999.
The impression that struck me the strongest was the similarity between the terrain of Caswell County, NC and of East Barren (now Metcalfe) County, KY where Thomas Bastin, Jr. settled. The resemblance was remarkable, with the same rolling hills, and flora. I now understand why, in their trek westward, they stopped and settled in the area that they did. It must have 'felt like home'. I certainly admit that I felt that way when I first drove out of Hillsboro, NC up to Yanceyville, NC, the county seat of Caswell County. As I approached the ancestral homeland of the BASTIN family in Caswell County, NC, it felt like home to me. The following photos are a short picture tour of our sightseeing trip through Caswell County, and I hope that you find them interesting. Best Regards, Gary Bastin, gbastin@cfl.rr.com
