What is a BASTIN-L ?

Is it a strange animal of some kind?

BASTIN-L
includes Bastyn, Baston, Basten, Bastjn, Beisstin, Bashteen, Bastian, Bostian. A mailing list for anyone who has an interest in genealogy related to the Bastin family and any related spellings (e.g., Bastyn, Baston, Basten, Bastjn, Beisstin, Bashteen, Bastian, Bostian, etc.) in any place and at any time. Mailing address for postings is bastin-l@rootsweb.com. To subscribe send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to bastin-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or bastin-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode).

Ok, so what is a mailing list?

Well, this is a bit easier to answer. It is a sort of like a magazine subscription, only you don't have to pay anything, and it arrives in your e-mail mailbox instead of out in your postal mailbox! You can also subscribe or unsubscribe at anytime, too, unlike to a magazine. The following links explain it all in a lot more detail.:

Will I feel welcome on a mailing list?

Well, I can't speak for all mailing lists, but I can for this one! BASTIN-L is a very friendly list, and there are numerous helpful individuals on the list. At latest count, we have slightly over 100 subscribers. Subscribe, following the instructions above, and you will receive a Welcome message explaining the detailed operation of the list. If you then have any questions about the list itself, please e-mail me, and I will be glad to answer any questions you may have.

In addition, after a week or so, at which time you will have a feeling for the current activities of the BASTIN-L group, you should send a short message to the list introducing yourself. Nothing personal, but it should just be a quick listing of your research name(s) and the geographic areas that are of interest to you. Send your message off to the address listed above, and you will receive a courtesy copy of your message in anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the loading on the computers at RootsWeb. The computers handle all the technical details of receiving your e-mail message and making sure it gets out to everyone on the list.

Don't be afraid to join the BASTIN Family Discussion List, BASTIN-L! We are all new at this when we start. It is just that some of us may be a little farther down the path to finding our BASTIN Family roots!

Cordially,
Gary Bastin
