Thomas 'Tommie' Bastin, III (son of Thomas Bastin, Jr. and Mary W. (ATWELL) Bastin, grandson of Thomas and Hannah Bastin of Caswell County, NC) married Louanna Shofner. Their children (oldest to youngest) included: William M. 'Bill', James Bluford 'Bluford', Joseph Henry 'Henry', Bartholomew, Thomas Lock, Richard Emory 'Dick', Mary Watson, Betchaba (a daughter), and Lock T. Bastin.
Infant mortality, and mortality of children in general, was high in the waning years before the War of the Rebellion. (For a biography on Tommie, see his biography. ) Of these nine, five -- Bartholomew, Thomas Lock, Mary Watson, Betchaba, and Lock T. -- all died young. Lock, the youngest child, died shortly after his fourth birthday. His tombstone is shown below. And, as has been true for his parents' tombstones, his tombstone has been struck by falling tree-limbs, and has been broken. (Photo taken in spring of 1998. Courtesy of Glenda Bastin. Thanks!)
