In the course of tracing our BASTIN family, certain individuals leave a lasting legacy that later generations talk about for years. "Dale's story he had heard his father, Medford Bastin, tell about Rooster Bastin follows: Rooster needed some money and he was broke. He figured out a way to get some cash. He took a hammer and beat up some brick and he was selling it on the street for flea powder. The law took him in for misrepresenting what he was selling and for peddling on the street. He got a lawyer to represent him. The lawyer said I'll get you out of this if you will do what I tell you. The lawyer told him, "when they call you on the stand you bleat like a goat no matter what they ask you." The judge got tired of listening at him and threw the case out of court; for he felt he didn't have enough mind to know what he was doing. As Rooster was leaving the court house, his attorney stopped him and said what about my fee. Rooster looked at him and went "baaa baaa" and kept walking. The judge had already said he was crazy. So, he was home free and it didn't cost him anything."
