Thomas 'Tommie' Bastin, III (son of Thomas Bastin, Jr. and Mary W. (ATWELL) Bastin, grandson of Thomas and Hannah Bastin of Caswell County, NC) married Louanna Shofner. Their children (oldest to youngest) included: William M. 'Bill', James Bluford 'Bluford', Joseph Henry 'Henry', Bartholomew, Thomas Lock, Richard Emory 'Dick', Mary Watson, Betchaba (a daughter), and Lock T. Bastin.
According to family stories handed down, Tommie, along with three of his sons joined the Federal Army. (Although not at the same time, nor in the same unit.) Another son, presumably Thomas Lock, stayed home to help take care of the family farm, although he could have served as a 'Musician', which was an option for boys older than 12. Thomas Lock Bastin survived the War of the Rebellion, staying home as his father and three of his brothers all went off to war. Although he survived the war, he died at age 19 on 12 Sep 1868. His tombstone is shown below. Of all the tombstones in the cemetary, his is in the best condition. (Photo taken in spring of 1998. Courtesy of Glenda Bastin. Thanks!)
