DUN EISTEIN ARCHEOLOGICAL and RESTORATION PROJECT
A pen and ink depiction of ancient "Dun Eistein"
Since 1997, when I became the Chairman of the CMSNA, I have been approached by many members asking about the Morrison Dun at the Butt of Lewis (Dun Eistein.) They have asked questions like, "Has anyone every explored the ruins or have there ever been any efforts to really find out what the island Dun looked like? I, myself, have asked the same questions. I even asked the Chief the same question. The Chief's answer was "No," but he too would be interested answering those questions.
I am happy to tell all Morrisons across the World Wide Web and the membership of the CMSNA of a venture which we hope shall turn into a future long-term project. The Chief has approached a group of archeologist's associated with a university in Scotland. It appears that this group is very interested and excited about the possiblity of a future archeological dig at Dun Eistein. I was advised by the Chief that a preliminary survey of the Dun Island would first take place. This survey would be completed with sophisticated equipment that can look down under the peat which has built up over hundreds of years. It would determine any understructure of the Dun, the stone wall which faced the main island, and any stone huts on the island. This survey should determine if it would be worth a future long-term archeological dig. This archeological team feels it is important to start this venture soon, so the enviromental elements do not destroy or erode the Dun Island any further. Presently the Dun is a pile of rocks standing at one end of the island, as you will see in the photographs I have included on this page.
Of course, any venture like this costs money and the Chief has advised that the survey will cost approximately $33,000 US dollars. So, at this point, I am setting up an account for donations for this project. Once the initial cost has been met we will start the project. Any donation for this venture may be tax deductable.
So I ask all Morrisons and the Septs of Morrison to think about this venture and what it would mean to your history and the proud heritage it will enlighten. Your help is needed and I believe we, as a proud Clan, can meet this goal and move on with long term archeological restoration of our heritage.
Thank you,
David R. Gilmour

The Chief has met with the archeological staff at the University of Glassgow and things are starting to move along. They will be visiting the Island in the near future to set up the plans for this venture. I will keep you update as I get more information.
