lgin Family - Ray is a descendant of George ELGIN, son of George ELGIN (Sr.) & Margaret NICOL. George was baptised on January 25, 1674 in Banff, Scotland and came to Port Tobacco, MD as a tailor circa 1700. He aquired two tracts of land called "Batchelor's Agreement" and "Batchelor's Rest" (copy of the original deed can be viewed at: Patent ) and became a prosperous planter in Charles County. In 1708, he married a first generation American, Elizabeth ADAMS who was born circa 1680 in Charles County, MD and was the daughter of Francis ADAMS & Grace THOMAS. (Francis was the progenitor of the Adams family whose members have played an important role in American history.) George and Elizabeth Adams Elgin had seven children. One of these was:

was
born circa 1728 in Charles County, MD and was married in 1752 to
Rebecca
CARTWRIGHT, born 1732 in St. Mary's County, MD, the daughter of Peter
& Hester CARTWRIGHT. Francis moved his young family to the new
county of Loudoun in Virginia circa 1757 and aquired a parcel of land totalling
750 acres which had originally been granted to Catesby COCKE by
Thomas, Lord FAIRFAX. Francis & Rebecca had 11 children. Francis'
Will leaves his entire estate to Rebecca, the land to be divided between
his three eldest sons upon her death and personal property among the younger
children.

Will) Rebecca died on May 05, 1812 and the land was divided
between Gustavus, Walter and Francis ELGIN Jr.
Francis ELGIN Jr. was born in 1758 in St. Mary's County, MD and married in 1783 to Jane ADAMS who was born July 01, 1759, the daughter of Andrew ADAMS and Catherine USN. Lieutenant Francis Elgin was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, recommended for commission by Governor Patrick HENRY, and served in the 2nd Battalion, 57th Regiment of the Loudoun County Militia. Francis Jr. died intestate on December 06, 1813 but court records regarding the settlement and division of his estate may be viewed here. Jane died in 1834. They had nine children the oldest of which was:
Gustavus ELGIN b. April 25, 1774 in Loudoun Co., VA, m. 1809 to Elizabeth TILLETT b. 1787, daughter of Samuel & Eleanor TILLETT. They had nine children. The fifth child was:
Gustavus A. (George) ELGIN b. circa 1821 in Loudoun Co., VA, m. 1848 IN to Mary C. WRAY b. 1824. In 1856 they moved to Fairmount, Vermilion County, IL where George worked as a blacksmith and wagonmaker. Both George & Mary died in 1889. They had six children. The second child was:
Henry Ball ELGIN b. February 1852 in Prince William County, VA, m. December 30, 1880 in Fairmount, IL to Catherine Puaha DAINS b. May 1862, daughter of Calvin H. DAINS and Elizabeth ROOK. Henry d. August 24, 1927 in Vermilion Co., IL. Catherine d. April 08, 1923 in Davenport, IA. They had 4 children. The eldest child was:
George Gustavus ELGIN b. September 04, 1882 in Fairmount, IL, m. Cora Delpha PARIS b. January 27, 1888 in Pawnee, KS, daughter of Lewis John PARIS (son of John B. PARIS Jr. & Mary T. STUFFLEBEAM) and Nancy Jean SHUCK (daughter of Martin J. SHUCK & Emily BENGE). George d. July 14, 1972 in New London, IA and Cora d. January 05, 1981 in Gulf Port, IL.
