Both Samuel and Mary are believed to be born in Pennsylvania (county unknown) in the late 1790s. They married in 1826 in Guernsey County, Ohio, and lived there until about 1848, when they moved to Jasper County, Missouri.
The family headed west to California most likely in 1856. Samuel died on the Trail, in what is now Nevada. The rest of the family settled initially in Healdsburg, Sonoma, Calif in 1857, with members gradually branching out into Napa County, Yolo County, and, further north, in Umatilla County, Oregon, and Grant County, Washington.
