Charles was the son of William James Knapp b 1862 in Maryland and Mary Christina Poole b 1860. He was orphaned along with his brother James in 1898 when both parents died, his father, it is said, died of a broken heart 4 months after his wifes death. They were then raised by a maiden Aunt, Blanche Kepler and Grandmother, Mary Elisabeth Howard Knapp Kepler, at 1400 North Gay St. They eloped to Ellicott City Maryland. Katherine was born October 15,1898 in Baltimore Maryland, daughter of Francis Carl Joseph Bauer and Anne Elisabeth Sheppard Klein. Her father was a Sculpture, he carved many of the gravestones at the Baltimore Cemetery which sadly were destroyed by vandals. Charles joined the Fire Department in 1922 and rose to Deputy Chief in 1940. He received six commendations including one in 1949 for rescuing five persons from a blazing building at 501 W.Fayette St. He Lived at 1627 North Gate Rd. with his family. He died June 10 1963 in Baltimore Maryland. Katherine died May 25 1890. Katherine raised 4 children and made the most wonderful Coconut Cakes and Peach cakes and cole slaw. They are buried at Moreland cemetery on Taylor ave. Lot 483 Section G. He was 68 years old at the time of his death, she was 81.
