Watson Waterwheel

Built in approximately 1909 by Jeremiah Eads (my great-grandfather) in Oregon's Malheur County community of Watson, this waterwheel is now under the backwaters of Owyhee Reservoir.
It can still be seen during years of drought when the lake waterlevel is extermely low.

The Basic Procedure
Juniper trees were chopped for the wood and hauled in a freight wagon to the Owyhee River. The wagon was pulled by a team of draft horses. The logs were then cut by hand into usable materials and nailed together with large steel spikes.

Until 1928 (when the Owyhee Dam Project began) the Owyhee River flowed freely through the vicinity. Trapping, fishing, and canoeing were uninhibited...

but that was before Progress...

when the Government forced all residents along the river to abandon their homes and move.

Now they know the meaning of the term

POWER!
