United Kingdom Counties & Regions
British counties and regions have been altered, both in name
and in geographic area, several times
over the years. However, up until the mid 1970s they remained unchanged.
On 1st April 1974
Britain's counties and regions underwent a significant change, many of the
traditional counties disappearing. They were either incorporated into neighbouring
counties or under new, larger counties.
In Scotland and Wales the traditional counties were incorporated into new,
more expansive regions.
In the last few years British counties have been changed yet again.
The two maps below show British counties prior to 1st April 1974
(map 1) and from the 16th May 1975 (map 2).
