Throughout the book of John, he describes the miracles that Jesus did. These miracles were actually signs that were also symbols to illustrate God's doctrine that had already been established. A symbol is something concrete that represents or suggests another thing that cannot in itself be pictured. For instance the lion is a symbol of bravery. In the book of John, Jesus works seven miracles from God, which symbolize what we are to do to walk out our life as a Christian. I have chosen to go over each one because I believe they are essential for our Christian walk to be successful.

The first miracle recorded is in John 2 when Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding. This miracle symbolizes our being changed from natural into spiritual. In my opinion this is a prerequisite to walk with God due to the fact He is a spiritual being. The second miracle in John 4 is when Jesus healed an official's son. The official asked Jesus to come with him before his child died. John 4: 50-53: Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed. This sign was a symbol of what it takes to change from natural to spiritual - just believe in His word. This requires knowing what His Word (the Bible) says.

The other six miracles were worked as follows: 3) John 5: 1-9: Jesus heals the invalid at the pool. This is symbolizing that you must be willing to be made whole. The evidence of this is when you actually get up and walk out your faith. You have to do something. 4) John 6: 1-14: Feeding five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish symbolizes that the spirit needs to feed on Jesus. According to the study notes in the NIV study bible: It shows Jesus as the supplier of human need, and sets the stage for His testimony that he is the bread of life. 5) John 6: 15-21: Jesus walking on the water symbolizes overcoming the storms of life. 6) John 9: 1-7: Jesus heals a man born blind. Jesus performed this miracle many times. This miracle is a symbol of our spiritual blindness before Jesus enters the picture. Jesus is the key to restoration of our spiritual insight, which we lost at the fall of man (Adam.) 7) John 11: 38-43: Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. This is a symbol that Jesus is the resurrecting power in our spiritual life. As you can see there was and still is a specific purpose when God manifests himself in the form of a miracle.
