Biography:
S. Ralph Hall was born April 6, 1904 on a farm 4 miles south of Pender, Nebraska. He
attended District 54 Elementary School in Cumming County Nebraska for 8 years. From 1918
to 1922 he attended and graduated from Pender High School. High school was 4 miles away
and the distance was traveled on horseback, bicycle, but mostly by a one horse buggy.
Ralph studied for 2 years at Wayne State Teachers College, in Wayne Nebraska from 1922 to
1924. He then transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where he
became a student of the fine arts, studying music. Ralph taught music and performed at hotels,
dining rooms and various dance clubs while in school. He returned home in 1928 when his
health failed and could not financially afford to continue to pursue his Bachelors Degree.
Ralph held a Teachers Certificate for public school music in Nebraska. For several years Ralph
continued to perform and teach music until 1933 when he took
employment as a photographer with Woltz Studio out of Des Moines, Iowa. He maintained his
residence in Pender, Nebraska and traveled around northeast Nebraska for Woltz. Ralph was
a member of the Pender Presbyterian church. In 1935 Ralph married
Marjorie Edna Laase, daughter of Amos Edward Laase and Mary Ellen Kaufel. In 1942 Ralph
and Majorie moved to Marion Iowa where Ralph was employed as a Diamond Saw Operator at
Collins Radio Corp. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1943, Ralph was employed as an inspector at
Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1946 Ralph and Majorie moved west to Tucson,
Arizona where Ralph and Marjorie started their own Jewelry Manufacturing Business. This
business continued through their retirement years. For the next 2 years, Ralph and Majorie moved
between Tucson, Arizona and California, preferring California in the summer months. In
1948 they moved to Bell California where they lived through retirement. In
addition to the Jewelry business, Ralph took employment with Axelson Aviation in
Monticello, California as an Inspector from 1951 to 1958. Ralph and Majorie continued their
interest in jewelry making, gems, coins and stamps until Ralph’s death in 1982. Ralph is the
ancestor most responsible for compiling records and passing down family history on the Hall family.
