George and Catherine
(Wood)
Denton

George M Denton, born May 30, 1813 in NC, was one among the first settlers Towns County. The Dentons we have been told, came to the state of VIrginia from France and then on to NC. From there they mved to Towns Co., Ga. George M Denton was the first Tax Collector when Towns County was organized in 1856. He was a surveyor and hleped survey the land for the town of Hiawassee. George M Denton married Catherine Wood, daughter of William and Nancy Osborn Wood. She was born Nov 22, 1819.

Sometime during George and Catherine's married life, they moved to White County. Later in years, George came back to Towns Co to visit some of his children. While he was here, he became severely ill and died. He was buried in the Upper Hightower Cemetery. About for or five years ago the grandchildren of Elisha H Denton bought a marker for his grave. We dont have any record of Catherine's death and burial, but we think she was buried in White County.
