Jessie Calvin Swanson, born June 30, 1856 in Mineral Bluff, Fannin Co., Ga., married July 23, 1876, Towns Co., to Mary Ann (Polly) Foster, the daughter of William Walton Foster and Rebecca Ann Bowen. He was a farmer. He tended several farms during his lifetime in Clay County. He at one time lived at Brasstown, NC on the Zimmerman farm; later he came to Town Mountain Road section, Clay County.
Jessie Calvin was a master in the craft of hewing logs for log cabins. The logs fit so perfectly there was very little chink to be filled.
His granddaughter has in her possession, the wood adze he used. It is still as sharp as a razor. Later in life he lost an eye.
He was the son of Anderson Clifton Swanson and Sarah Brown. Anderson was born in Wilkes Co NC. He and Sarah were married in Wilkes Co., later went to Union County, Ga., then to Fannin Co. Ga., and later on to Towns Co., Ga.
Anderson served in the Southern Army. I have been told he favored the North, but knew if he left the South, his family would be in danger. He was a blacksmith while in the army, keeping the horses shod and shoes repaired.
About 1879-1880 Anderson came to Clay Co. He had several children living in Clay Co.
Jessie Calvin was the grandson of James Swanson and Elizabeth Ferguson, the great-grandson of John Swanson and Elizabeth Clifton and the great-great-grandson of Richard and Olive Swanson. His great-grandfather John was a Revolutionary Soldier.
