Anderson Clifton Swanson



Anderson Clifton Swanson was born in Wilkes Co NC, Mar 25, 1820. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Ferguson Swanson and grandson of John (Rev Sold) and Elizabeth Clifton Swanson. He married July 23, 1839, in Wilkes Co, NC, to Sarah Brown. She could be the daughter of Eli and Elizabeth Brookshire Brown of Wilkes Co NC.

Anderson went to Union County about 1849. During the civil war Anderson lived at Crooked Creek. Although he was opposed to slavery and believed in the preservation of the Union, he thought it best not to leave the South for the protection of his family.

Anderson was six feet tall, had light complexion, blue eyes and sandy hair. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and a licensed preacher.

Mary Elizabeth born 1840, married Christopher Moore.
Martha Clara born 1843, married Alex Curtis.
William Alpheus born 1846, married (1) Mary Logan, (2) Georgia Irwin.
James Smith born 1848, married Cynthia J Emmeline Wood.
John Burton born 1852, married (1) Sarah Levary Ann Burch, (2) Mary Elizabeth Ketcheside.
George Washington born 1854, married Lilly Ida Wood.
Clara Catharine born and died 1856.
Jesse Calvin born 1856, (twin to Clara) married Mary Ann Foster.
Jasper Barton born and died 1857.
Rebecca Adeline born 1860, married Monroe Greenwood.
Joseph Anderson born 1862.

Anderson and Sarah lived their last years on the farm he bought about 1879. Sarah died Feb 18, 1888 and Anderson died in July 1905 and is buried beside Sarah in the Woods Grove Cemetery.
