Subject: [COULOMBE-L] COULOMBE Name
Hi, Thought someone might be interested in what I found on the meaning of the name Coulombe. I found this in a book at the library called "American Surnames". Coulombe, Colombe is French. In Italian its Colombo, Colomba. In Spanish its Colon. All these names mean "dove". They come from St. Columba in the sixth century, who was the apostle of the Picts. The name is related to Columbus, regarded by most Americans as the discoverer of thier homeland. Sometimes these names derived from one who raised and sold doves. The dove has taken a large part in legend, folklore, and religeous symbolism. It is frequently seen in early Christian art, often as the symbol of the Holy Spirit. From the Old French there are the names, Colomb, Coulon, Coulombe and Dube. ************* Don't know how correct this is, but thought it was interesting. Carole
