What Child is This

Christmas Customs

All families have their favorite Holiday customs whether they are made by you or are handed down from our ancestors. My family is no exception. These are the things that make Christmas memorable and we hand down to our children whether it is reading Luke 2 or making cookies together. All children should have good memories. Here are some of my families customs.

Sugar Plum Tree

My children and I make handmade items to sell at our local Christmas Bazaar. This is also when the Sugar Plum Tree is presented to the public. The tree is covered with ornaments. Each ornament has a child's sex, age and gift idea. Each child has ornaments for toys and clothes. You select as many ornaments as you can handle, fill out your mailing and phone information in a book next to the ornament number. This way they know who selected which ornament. We usually select two or three ornaments from the tree and buy the items with the money we earned by selling our handicrafts at the bazaar. If we do real well, we take another one or two ornaments off the tree. This teaches the children how to work for the gifts they are giving instead of getting. My children understand this because at one time, they were on the Sugar Plum Tree. We are giving back for all the help we received.

The Tree

We usually have a artificial tree. We put up the tree the day after Thanksgiving and don't take it down until New Years Day. Everyone has a part for the decorating that they are in charge of, whether it is the decorations, lights, angel or star. When we are done we have Hot Apple Cider and Sugar Cookies.

Christmas Eve

My children open one present on Christmas Eve. We call that gift the Rudolph gift. It usually has pajamas, a robe or slippers and something fun. The gift tag says to: child's name From: Rudolph. They look forward to opening that gift. We also make Santa's cookies. If you don't have time to make home made dough, just buy the refrigerated dough or buy cookies and decorate with the tubes of icing.

Christmas Day

Now that my children are teens, I can sleep in on Christmas morning(6 am instead of 3 am). We read the tag and then open a gift, taking turns. After the gifts are opened, we have breakfast and go visit family and friends. Grandparents are the last on the list so we can spend the most time there.

First Christmas

This will be a slightly different Christmas this year. This will be my first Christmas as a Grandma. The baby will only be 2 months old(due in a few weeks) but both I and my daughter are excited.
