Emergency Handicraft Bag

This should be able to fit in a quart size zipper storage bag. If needed you can use a gallon size. The quart size bag fits nice in a glove compartment and the gallon fits under the seat of the vehicle. I like to use a quart for my needlecraft tools and a gallon for the yarn.

I do crocheting and knitting so I included items for both. See the picture at the bottom of the page.

Don't add too many extra items like extra sizes of hooks etc... or you might as well be packing your knitting bag. Remember, we want to conserve space.

I was able to fit the following items in a snack size ziplock type bag. If you do both knitting and crochet then place all these items in the quart bag:

4 large safety pins - make great stitch holders for knitting and are great for holding small balls of yarn if doing a multicolor item. Also great to use for holding pieces together.
Crochet hooks in sizes G, I and D or your most used sizes. I sometimes change from an I to a K if using 12" square patterns. These can also be used to sew seams. They are also great for automotive and home repairs.
A piece of ribbon 6 - 12 inches long with measurements marked. Roll up and use one of the safety pins to hold it. If you have a small tape measure that rewinds on it's own, even better.
Fingernail Clippers - These are easy to clip your yarn with or you can use a tiny pair of folding scissors.
Tiny Post-it pad - Great for keeping track of where you are by marking rows on or moving it to the part of the pattern you are on. You never know when traffic may start moving and will have to put your work down. This way you will know what row you were last on.
4 - 6 colored paperclips - these are great for stitch markers and to hold your pattern page open.
A few of your favorite patterns - Make a copy of each and fold. I insert these in a cheap pocket photo album. This way you have a pattern to work from. Even if it is a granny square or booties. If adding a bootie pattern, make sure you include some baby yarn. This also helps if you are out of town and want to make something, you have the supplies and pattern. You just go in a store and get some yarn.
Mechanical pencil - to mark rows or ideas on the post it notes.

Items in snack size bag.

In a quart or larger bag add:
Knitting Needles - These won't fit in the snack size bag. Size 5 and 7 or most used sizes. I used the short 7 inch ones. You can use 2 double pointed needles and add tip protectors to make a set of regular 7 inch needles. These are great for slippers, scarves, booties, etc...

Items all in a quart size bag.

Assorted balls of small skeins or balls of yarn - what good does it do to pack a pattern and supplies with no yarn or thread to work with.

Variations: Add smaller hooks and some thread to make ornaments or snowflakes. Add balls of yarn to make granny squares of different colored rounds using a basic pattern - or make granny daughters(first round of a basic granny square pattern with ends woven in).

I do knitting and crochet so I placed all my items in a quart bag. I them placed the bag is a gallon bag with the yarn. This way the tools don't get mixed and tangled in the yarn.

All items in the finished bag. I included cotton yarn for a dishcloth, baby yarn for booties, worsted weight camouflage yarn for a hat and variegated yarn(red, white and blue) for a pair of slippers. You can see the index cards in the back with my patterns on. Need to find my photo album to put them in. This entire kit will fit under my front seat.

The small bag kit without yarn is great for a glove compartment.
